Wicked: Part I has already brought the musical’s first act to the screen. Rather than inventing a definitive list of 15 exact film quotations, this guide looks at the song-linked moments that make the adaptation’s emotional arc work—and explains why their words, speakers and placement matter.
Why a “15 quotes” list needs a caveat
The title asks which iconic lines the movie must include, but the available official material does not establish a definitive ranking of 15 exact quotations from the released film. The official musical synopsis identifies signature songs, not a line-by-line film transcript. Treat the moments below as a guide to what makes the story’s language memorable, not as verified verbatim movie quotes.

That distinction matters because a memorable moment may be a spoken line, a lyric, or a musical sequence whose meaning comes from performance and context. Confirm exact wording and speaker against an authorized film or script before quoting dialogue or lyrics.
What the movie adapts—and where its story stops
Wicked: Part I adapts and expands Act One of the Broadway musical. That structure shapes which moments feel like turning points: the film develops Elphaba and Glinda’s early relationship and reaches the first act’s dramatic culmination rather than resolving the complete story. The musical’s creative lineage runs from Gregory Maguire’s novel to Winnie Holzman’s book and Stephen Schwartz’s music and lyrics.

For anyone asking which musical lines made it into the movie, compare a candidate moment along four useful axes:
- Character: Does it reveal how Elphaba or Glinda sees herself and others?
- Relationship: Does it show their friendship changing?
- Adaptation: Does the film preserve a stage moment or give it new emphasis?
- Form: Is it spoken dialogue, a lyric, or a moment carried by the music and staging?
Three song moments that anchor the story
The official musical synopsis highlights “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good” as signature songs. They are strong reference points for discussing the musical’s legacy, but their inclusion in that synopsis does not, by itself, verify exact film wording or establish that all three appear in Part I. In particular, do not present “For Good” as a moment in the first film without checking the released film: it belongs to the wider story, beyond the Act One material this movie adapts.

“Defying Gravity”: a turning point, not just a catchphrase
As an Act One anchor, “Defying Gravity” carries the force of a decision and a break from the world that has tried to define Elphaba. Its impact depends on the buildup: the character’s convictions, the choices confronting her, and the shift from private dissent to public action. A quotation stripped of that context can make the moment sound like a slogan instead of a culmination.
“Popular”: humor that reveals a friendship
“Popular” is a comic showcase for Glinda, but it also gives the friendship room to take shape. The contrast between Glinda’s confidence in social rules and Elphaba’s discomfort with them makes the number entertaining while showing how differently they understand acceptance. The song’s importance is therefore more than its most repeatable line.

“For Good”: a signature song outside this film’s first-act scope
“For Good” is one of the musical’s recognized signature songs, but recognition is not evidence that a song or its lyrics belong in Wicked: Part I. Its emotional meaning depends on developments in the broader story. It is useful to mention when explaining the musical’s reach; it should not be folded into a list of first-film quotations unless the released film confirms it.
Why music matters as much as the words
Director Jon M. Chu described music’s expressive role this way: “When words aren’t enough, music is the extension of your expression.” The idea helps explain why a list of quotations can miss what makes a musical moment land. A line’s meaning may depend on the melody, the singer’s delivery, the other character’s reaction and the scene’s visual scale—not only on the words printed on a page.
Rank #4
- Runtime: 138 minutes
That is especially relevant when adapting a stage musical for film. A sequence can be expanded visually, paced differently or reframed around a character’s reaction. To discuss what the movie includes, distinguish the recognizable song anchor from any exact lyric or dialogue attributed to a particular performer.
How to verify an exact movie quote
- Identify the scene and speaker. Make sure the words belong to the character and moment you intend to describe.
- Check an authorized film or script source. A synopsis can confirm a song’s prominence, but it is not a transcript.
- Label lyrics and dialogue accurately. Do not describe a lyric as spoken dialogue or imply that a song title proves a particular line is in the film.
- Keep the adaptation boundary clear. Separate first-film moments from songs and developments that belong to the musical’s later story.
Where to revisit the music
Universal Music Canada announced a vinyl edition of Wicked: The Soundtrack, naming songs including “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “Dancing Through Life.” The announcement establishes that a vinyl edition was offered, but not its current stock or availability in every region; check the label’s current product information before purchasing. The soundtrack is a way to revisit the songs, not a substitute for a verified film transcript.
