The path to television fame ran through hunting, fishing, and years of work at home in Louisiana—not a conventional entertainment career.
Phil Robertson’s life before Duck Commander
1. He grew up in north Louisiana
The Associated Press described Phil Robertson as born in north Louisiana and spending his life among the region’s woods and lakes. Those surroundings would remain central to his life and the family’s later public identity. AP’s obituary of Phil Robertson offers an independent overview of his life.
2. Football came before duck calls
Robertson played football at Louisiana Tech. In the family’s history book, Willie Robertson says his father earned a football scholarship to the university. The AP also notes his college football career.
3. He became Louisiana Tech’s starting quarterback
According to Willie Robertson’s account in The Duck Commander Family, Phil redshirted his freshman year and later won the starting quarterback job. The book says he was ahead of Terry Bradshaw on the depth chart.

4. He quit football after seeing geese fly over practice
Willie’s book recounts that Phil saw geese pass over the practice field, began questioning why he was there, and left the team a few days later, before his senior season. That is a family recollection, not an independently verified account of the moment.
5. He earned two degrees
The same family-book excerpt says Robertson earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1969 and a master’s degree in 1974, both at Louisiana Tech.

6. He taught English and physical education
After college, Robertson took a teaching job in Junction City, Arkansas, according to Willie’s book. The AP independently reports that he taught school before building his duck-call business.
7. He also ran a honky-tonk
Both The Duck Commander Family and the publisher’s description of Phil Robertson’s autobiography, Happy, Happy, Happy, recount his time as a bar proprietor. Willie’s account says Phil left teaching and leased a honky-tonk in Arkansas. These details come from family accounts.

13. The family sold fish as well as calls
A&E’s biography of Phil says Kay and the sons ran nets and took fish to market in a side commercial fishing business that helped keep food on the table. Willie’s A&E biography also recalls learning sales by selling fish with his mother.
14. Phil made his first Duck Commander call in 1972
A&E says Phil gave up coaching for duck hunting and developed his original call in 1972. The network quotes him describing its purpose: “No duck would even place in a duck calling contest.” A&E reports that first-year call sales reached $8,000 and that Phil received a patent the same year. The page does not state the year of publication for the sales figure, and it does not identify the amount as inflation-adjusted or independently audited.
15. Duck Commander became a family operation in 1973
A&E says Phil formed Duck Commander in 1973. The family home in West Monroe became the place where the Robertsons assembled, packaged, and shipped calls. Willie later became company president, and his A&E biography links his sales experience to selling fish with Kay.

What the timeline tells us
The central sequence is simple: football, teaching, and other work came before the call business; A&E dates Phil’s first call and patent to 1972, then the formation of Duck Commander to 1973. The enterprise began as hands-on family work—making and shipping calls while also selling fish—not as a television venture. The personal episodes about college, courtship, and the family’s hardships are best understood as accounts from the Robertsons’ books, while AP provides an independent summary of Phil’s regional roots and career.
