Popular 1960s gadgets ranged from portable radios and tape recorders to kitchen tools and electronic calculators—but not every familiar device was invented during the decade. Some were 1950s inventions that became part of a more portable, personal electronics culture; others arrived later or were rare luxuries. Here are 15 period examples, with dates and context that show what people used and what only seems quintessentially ’60s in hindsight.

Portable listening and communication

1. Transistor radio

The pocket transistor radio helped make listening a personal activity: unlike a household radio, it could travel with its owner. The Regency TR-1 is identified by Smithsonian Magazine as the first commercial transistor radio. It dates to 1954, so it was a forerunner—not an invention of the 1960s. Its small plastic case, headphone jack and simple controls point toward the decade’s portable-radio culture.

2. Portable transistor television

Portable television had an earlier start than many people assume. Motorola’s company timeline records a transistorized portable television in 1960. “Portable” did not necessarily mean light by modern standards: the National Museum of American History describes a carry-it-around television first sold around 1955 that weighed 25 pounds. The museum also reports that nearly 90% of American homes had a television by 1960, a figure about US TV ownership, not gadget adoption generally (National Museum of American History, 2016).

3. Portable two-way radio

Two-way radios brought portable communication beyond the home. Motorola’s timeline dates a portable two-way radio to 1962. It was a specialized communication tool rather than an everyday consumer device like a pocket radio, but it illustrates how transistorized electronics were being put to mobile uses.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

4. Portable tape recorder

In 1963, Philips presented its Pocket Recorder EL 3300 alongside the compact cassette EL1903 at Berlin’s IFA. The recorder let people carry a means of recording as well as playing sound. By 1966, Philips says, a cassette recorder had been built into a portable radio—a combination that joined listening and recording in one device (Philips Museum).

5. Compact cassette

The compact cassette was the small recording medium behind Philips’ portable recorder. Its 1963 presentation is a useful marker for the format’s arrival, but it was not the only tape system around. A cassette recorder’s name alone does not guarantee compatibility with every tape cartridge or format.

6. Cartridge tape recorder

A DeJur-Grundig portable cartridge tape recorder made in West Germany in 1967 used a special cartridge that other manufacturers did not adopt. The format quickly faded from the market, making it a reminder that “tape recorder” did not mean one universal system. The National Museum of American History documents the object and its format history (Cartridge Tape Recorder).

Cameras and the promise of instant pictures

7. Instant camera

Instant photography was part of the era’s camera experience, but it did not begin in the 1960s. PBS’s American Experience dates Edwin Land’s instant camera to 1947 and notes that Land followed it in the 1960s with a color model (Technology Timeline (1752–1990)). The distinction matters: a specific color model may belong to the decade, while the underlying instant-camera idea predates it.

Kitchen gadgets and domestic convenience

8. Nonstick pan

Nonstick pans appeared in the United States in 1960, according to the National Museum of American History’s account of new kitchen materials and tools. They belong to a decade when new materials were changing the everyday cooking toolkit (New Materials, New Tools).

9. CorningWare casserole

A CorningWare casserole from 1965 is another specific example of a kitchen object associated with the period. Dating the object is more precise than suggesting that casserole dishes as a category began in the 1960s.

10. Automatic electric can opener

The automatic electric can opener was introduced in 1958, before the decade began. The Smithsonian’s example is a Dazey opener dating to around 1970. It fits the postwar story of electrical convenience, but its dates make it a poor example of a 1960s invention.

11. Electric slow cooker

The Crock-Pot is a removable-insert electric slow cooker, but the Smithsonian’s exhibited example and cookbook date to around 1975. It is better understood as a later development in the convenience-appliance story than as a confirmed 1960s product.

Calculators: desktop in the 1960s, handheld in the 1970s

12. Programmable desktop electronic calculator

Programmable desktop electronic calculators were available from the mid-1960s, according to the National Museum of American History. That makes a desktop machine a valid 1960s calculator, even though it was not the compact pocket device now most readily associated with the word.

13. Handheld electronic calculator

The familiar handheld consumer calculator belongs to the next decade in the United States: the museum dates handheld calculator introductions there to 1970 and 1971. Calling a calculator “1960s” without specifying a desktop model blurs a meaningful change in size and use (National Museum of American History collection; see also its handheld-calculator introduction).

Play and high-end home entertainment

14. Suzy Homemaker miniature appliances

Topper Toys introduced its Suzy Homemaker line in 1966. The miniature working appliance toys turned housework into play while reflecting the gendered expectations of period advertising. A television commercial quoted by Judy Gradwohl of the National Museum of American History promised: “With Suzy Homemaker you can entertain, wash dishes, clean house, launder, iron, bake… and always look lovely” (National Museum of American History, 2014).

15. Ampex “Signature V” home entertainment center

For a very different kind of gadget, the Ampex “Signature V” combined an AM/FM tuner, turntable, audio tape recorder, television and reel-to-reel video recorder in a 1963 home entertainment center. The National Museum of American History says only five were made. It was a rare, high-end vision of an all-in-one media room, not a typical household purchase (Ampex “Signature V” home entertainment center).

What these gadgets say about 1960s life

Portability and miniaturization made personal listening and mobile communication more practical, while new materials and electrical appliances promised greater convenience at home. But convenience did not automatically mean less domestic work. The National Museum of American History’s account of the consumer era describes how “living electrically” was marketed as abundance even as more appliances could raise expectations for cleanliness and elaborate food preparation (Abundance).

The decade’s gadgets are therefore best understood as a mix of established devices made more portable, genuinely new products, competing media formats, and later objects that nostalgia can pull backward in time. A model’s launch date and market matter as much as the category name.
