“Cheesy” doesn’t mean worthless: these 15 ’90s movies earn the label through dated effects, familiar plots, awkward performances or gleefully heightened camp—and remain enjoyable for those very reasons. This is a cross-genre, subjective selection, not a claim that these are the decade’s objectively worst films. Some play their silliness straight; others know exactly what they’re doing.
How these movies made the list
The picks span horror, suspense, comedy and cult films, so they aren’t ranked against one another as if they shared a genre or goal. Each entry is here for a recognizable kind of cheese: a premise that now feels dated, a familiar genre formula, conspicuous effects, clunky dialogue or broad camp. Deliberate self-parody counts differently from accidental awkwardness, and not every film fits every category.
15 cheesy ’90s movies worth revisiting
| Film | Genre | What makes it cheesy | Intentional? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Net (1995) | Suspense | A thriller whose technology-centered anxieties now feel distinctly of their era. | Mostly played straight; the datedness is part of the fun now. |
| Spawn (1997) | Superhero horror | Dark comic-book melodrama and effects that can look conspicuously period-bound. | Heightened in places, though not simply a comedy. |
| I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) | Teen slasher | A revenge premise delivered through familiar slasher conventions. | Mostly earnest genre storytelling. |
| Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) | Slasher | A legacy-sequel setup that leans on the franchise’s established suspense machinery. | Primarily straight-faced. |
| Bride of Chucky (1998) | Horror comedy | Slasher mayhem pushed toward outrageous, self-aware camp. | Deliberately playful. |
| The Blair Witch Project (1999) | Horror | Its rough, found-footage presentation can feel awkward or disorienting, a quality that also suits its premise. | Its raw style is a deliberate choice, not an effects failure. |
| The Faculty (1998) | Teen science-fiction horror | Teen-movie and alien-invasion conventions meet in a knowingly heightened package. | Leans into its genre mash-up. |
| The Craft (1996) | Teen supernatural drama | High-school angst and supernatural theatrics make for an emphatically ’90s mood. | Stylized rather than simply self-mocking. |
| Lake Placid (1999) | Creature feature | A killer-crocodile setup invites outsized creature-feature fun. | Broadly comic in tone. |
| Good Burger (1997) | Comedy | Silly, low-brow humor and a simple fast-food rivalry premise. | Intentionally goofy. |
| Empire Records (1996) | Cult comedy-drama | A heightened, youthful portrait of a record-store crew that wears its ’90s sensibility openly. | More earnest and quirky than outright parody. |
| The Suburbans (1999) | Comedy | A once-famous band confronts the humiliating attention of the music business—and, in Sony’s description, an “impossible lack of talent.” | The premise makes the joke intentional. |
| The Pickle (1993) | Comedy | A filmmaker’s teenage sci-fi movie revolves around a flying cucumber: a proudly absurd idea. | The comic premise is deliberate. |
| Viewer Discretion Advised (1998) | Comedy / genre anthology | A television viewer becomes a performer in assorted genres, giving the film room for deliberately varied, over-the-top modes. | Its genre-hopping premise points toward intentional play. |
| The Blair Witch Project (1999) | Horror | A low-budget aesthetic became part of its uncanny appeal. | Intentionally rough. |
What kind of cheese are you in the mood for?
- For knowingly campy horror: Try Bride of Chucky or Lake Placid, where the heightened tone is part of the pleasure.
- For straight-faced ’90s suspense: The Net, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Halloween H20 make their period and genre conventions easy to spot.
- For teen supernatural style: The Craft and The Faculty offer different blends of high-school drama and horror.
- For comedy built on silliness: Good Burger keeps things broad, while The Suburbans and The Pickle center their humor on outlandish premises.
A note on The Blair Witch Project and its reputation
Classic Nerd’s 2024 article says The Blair Witch Project made “almost $250 million.” That figure is attributed here to Classic Nerd, a secondary source; it is not an independently verified box-office total. The film’s place on this list is about its raw style and the way that style reads today, not about judging its commercial success.
