14 Haunted Theme Parks That Were Abandoned: What’s Known—and What Isn’t

Abandoned parks invite ghost stories, but the available evidence supports a more grounded account: varied closures, local memory and the haunting aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at Six Flags New Orleans.

“Haunted” is an atmospheric label, not proof of paranormal activity. Abandoned amusement parks draw attention because decaying rides and empty grounds preserve traces of former entertainment, local history and, in some cases, tragedy. But the available sources do not establish a verified roster of the 14 parks named in this title. One well-documented example is Jazzland, later Six Flags New Orleans, whose closure followed Hurricane Katrina.

What does “haunted” mean in stories about abandoned parks?

In this context, “haunted” describes the mood of a place or the folklore and memories attached to it. The available reporting does not verify paranormal activity at these parks. An eerie photograph or ghost story should not be presented as evidence that a supernatural event occurred.

Abandoned amusement parks also do not share one history. Financial trouble, changing conditions, disasters and tragedy have all contributed to closures, according to the Los Angeles Times. Their empty rides may look alike in photographs, but the reasons they fell silent differ.

What happened to Jazzland and Six Flags New Orleans?

Jazzland opened in New Orleans in 2000 on land built over wetlands. After its parent company declared bankruptcy in 2002, Six Flags acquired the park, upgraded it and renamed it Six Flags New Orleans. The park closed ahead of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and never reopened.

The storm is central to the site’s story, but it was not the beginning of the park’s business difficulties: its ownership and financial troubles preceded Katrina. In an August 2024 account, The Washington Post described wetlands reclaiming the grounds and noted that film and television productions had used the abandoned property. Columnist Travis M. Andrews wrote, “It would never reopen,” referring to the park after its storm-related closure. Read the report at The Washington Post.

Which other abandoned parks are documented?

A 2014 Los Angeles Times feature listed Nara Dreamland, Spreepark, Pripyat, Okpo Land, Joyland, Chippewa Lake Park and Wonderland among 21 abandoned amusement parks worldwide. That is a separate list; it does not confirm the 14 parks in the title here. The available pages also do not establish the dates, closure causes or current conditions for each of those places. The Los Angeles Times list is a starting point for further reading, not a verified inventory of this article’s 14.

The exact roster of the titled 14-park list could not be independently confirmed from the available source pages. It would be misleading to fill that gap by combining selections from an unrelated list or by adding parks from memory.

Can you visit an abandoned amusement park?

No. A description of a site as abandoned does not mean that it is open to the public. Ownership, safety conditions and access rules can change, and the available reporting does not establish general visitor access to these locations. Check with the owner or relevant local authority before making plans; do not enter without permission.

How to assess a park’s story

For any abandoned park, distinguish what is documented from what is rumor. Useful questions include when it operated, what caused its closure, what remains, whether it has been demolished, redeveloped or preserved, and whether public access is authorized. A dramatic setting can invite speculation, but those details—not a ghost claim—explain what happened to a place.
