“Crocodile horror” is a roomy genre label: this selection includes alligators as well as crocodiles, plus mutant-animal and science-fiction variations. Cheryl Eddy’s May 31, 2022 Gizmodo roundup says it is “mostly crocodiles” and that the films are not aiming for scientific accuracy. The titles below follow Eddy’s original order, not a ranking; use the premise and tone to find your next creature feature.
Modern survival stories and Australian wilderness
Crawl (2019)
When a hurricane traps a young woman and her father in their Florida home, alligators turn the disaster into a fight for survival. Choose this for a contemporary, disaster-driven creature feature.

Rogue (2007)
A river cruise in northern Australia veers into the territory of a giant crocodile. Its wilderness setting makes it a natural pick for viewers after an expedition thriller.
Black Water (2007)
A swamp tour in Australia becomes a survival story when a crocodile threatens the group. The premise is more contained and survival-focused than a broad, city-scale monster attack.

Dark Age (1987)
An Australian ranger confronts a killer crocodile amid local spiritual beliefs about the animal. It brings cultural and community tensions into the creature-feature setup.
Cult creature features, camp and creature chaos
Lake Placid (1999)
An ensemble of characters faces a dangerous creature in a Maine lake. The film’s humor and cast give it a lighter, more comic creature-feature flavor; five made-for-TV sequels followed.
Rank #2
Killer Crocodile (1989)
This Italian creature feature links a giant crocodile to toxic waste. Its ecological-danger premise is delivered as a schlockier monster movie rather than a naturalistic survival drama.
The Great Alligator River (1979)
In Sergio Martino’s film, a crocodile is presented as a god taking revenge on tourists. The supernatural premise sets it apart from stories focused simply on people escaping an animal.

Crocodile (2000)
Tobe Hooper’s straight-to-video film pits spring-break visitors near a nest against a protective crocodile. It turns the familiar “people enter the animal’s territory” setup into a campy creature feature.
Blood Surf (2000)
A dangerous surfing stunt involving chum and sharks draws the attention of a giant crocodile. The movie’s setup leans into over-the-top action and creature mayhem.
Alligator (1980)
This creature feature adapts the Chicago sewer-alligator urban legend into a monster story. It is a city-set counterpart to the Australian river and swamp films in this selection.
Alligator II: The Mutation (1991)
The sequel is a separate film, not another name for the 1980 original. It extends the alligator-creature-feature pairing with a mutation premise.

Older horror and stranger transformations
Eaten Alive (1976)
Tobe Hooper’s motel-set horror follows a deranged owner who feeds victims to his crocodile. The human villain is as central to its disturbing premise as the animal.
Primeval (2007)
A fictionalized hunt for the crocodile Gustave unfolds against the Burundi conflict. Its “inspired by a true story” framing is promotional; it should not be taken as verification of the film’s depicted attacks.
The Alligator People (1959)
This older science-fiction horror film centers on humans transformed through strange science. It is the selection’s outlier: the threat is not just a crocodilian animal but a transformation premise.
What to pick by mood
- For disaster survival: Crawl.
- For a contained, tense survival setup: Black Water.
- For an Australian wilderness setting: Rogue or Dark Age.
- For humor or camp: Lake Placid, Alligator or Killer Crocodile.
- For an older science-fiction angle: The Alligator People.
Where to watch these films
Current streaming, digital rental or purchase, and physical-media availability for these titles is not established here; catalogs vary by region and change over time. Eddy’s 2022 article noted that Alligator and Alligator II: The Mutation were due to arrive on Shudder starting June 2, 2022. That was a dated announcement, not confirmation that either film is available there now.
