Shudder and Crunchyroll are among the least expensive mainstream ad-free options at about $7.99 per month. Discovery+ and AMC+ follow at $9.99, while broad services such as Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Max cost considerably more. This ranking uses regular U.S. monthly prices before tax, checked for this guide on August 16, 2026; it excludes temporary promotions, student pricing, carrier benefits and bundle discounts.
“Ad-free” means the principal on-demand catalog has no conventional commercial breaks. It does not always exclude service trailers, sponsorship messages, live-channel commercials, sports advertising, or short rights-related interruptions. Prices, plan names and catalogs can change, so confirm the final checkout screen before subscribing.

| 9 | Prime Video ad-free | $4.99 add-on; about $19.98 with $14.99 monthly Prime | The $4.99 Prime Video Ultra/ad-free charge is an add-on, not a complete standalone comparison. The order is based on the lowest recurring monthly price that provides ad-free on-demand access to a service’s principal catalog. Annual-plan equivalents, introductory offers, bundles and membership benefits are not used to move a service up the table.
What “ad-free” actually excludes
- Live television and sports: a service can be ad-free on demand while carrying the commercials supplied with a live broadcast.
- Rights exceptions: Hulu explicitly allows short breaks around some programs, and AMC+ identifies live-TV and program exceptions.
- Promotional material: trailers, sponsorship notices and promotional banners may still appear even when conventional commercials do not.
- Separate purchases: Prime Video rentals, channels and some licensed or live content are governed by different terms.
Which low-cost service is useful for you?
Cheapest specialty catalog
Shudder is the clearest low-price choice for horror. Crunchyroll is similarly inexpensive for anime, but its Fan tier is less suitable if you need offline downloads or several simultaneous streams.

Best under $15 for a focused catalog
Discovery+ covers reality, lifestyle, factual and true-crime programming at $9.99. AMC+ costs the same and adds AMC’s originals and genre material, but its live exceptions make the “no ads” label less absolute. BritBox is compelling only if British programming is your priority.
Best curated originals
Apple TV costs $12.99 and has a smaller, heavily curated catalog rather than the breadth of Netflix or Prime Video. Apple also lists MLB and U.S. Formula 1 and MLS access beginning in 2026; availability depends on the relevant season and rights.

Best broad entertainment value
Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Max offer substantially larger general-interest catalogs, but their higher prices make rotating subscriptions sensible. Hulu is particularly useful for current television and FX; Disney+ is strongest for franchise and family viewing; Max centers on HBO and Warner Bros.; Netflix has the broadest mainstream mix among these choices.
Best if you already pay for Prime
Prime Video’s $4.99 ad-free option can be economical for an existing Prime member, but a new customer paying $14.99 monthly Prime plus the add-on spends about $19.98 before tax. Do not compare the add-on alone with a complete streaming subscription.

Monthly versus annual billing
This article ranks monthly prices because monthly billing preserves flexibility. Annual plans can lower the effective monthly rate, but they require an upfront payment and can cost more if you rotate services after one season or a single series. Annual billing is most defensible when you expect to watch a service throughout most of the year.
Bundles change the math
Disney+/Hulu packages, Apple One, Prime benefits, Paramount+ or Peacock offers through other memberships, and wireless or credit-card promotions may reduce the effective cost. They are excluded here because they require paying for additional services or benefits and may apply different advertising rules. Compare a bundle only after deciding whether you will actually use everything included.

How to choose and avoid overpaying
- Identify the catalog you will watch, not merely the lowest sticker price.
- Check whether your must-watch programs are on demand or live; live sports and channels are the most common source of commercials.
- Confirm the exact tier’s resolution, HDR, audio, download and simultaneous-stream limits.
- Use a monthly subscription for a short series, seasonal sport or rotating catalog.
- Choose annual billing only when the upfront commitment is cheaper for your expected viewing period.
- Review the provider’s checkout page for taxes, trial terms and the renewal price before paying.
Bottom line
For the lowest normal monthly price, start with Shudder or Crunchyroll if a specialty catalog meets your needs. Discovery+ and AMC+ are the cheapest broader niche choices. Apple TV and Paramount+ offer more general appeal below $15, while Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Max justify their higher prices only when their specific catalogs are central to your household. Treat Prime Video as a total-membership calculation, not a $4.99 service, and treat every “ad-free” claim as applying primarily to on-demand viewing.
