Written, directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is based on Anurag Pathak’s book and inspired by IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma’s story. Its real-life inspiration is not proof that every scene is a verified biographical event.
What is 12th Fail about?
The film follows Manoj as he faces academic setbacks and decides to start again, pursuing the highly competitive UPSC examination. The official film synopsis describes him as a Hindi-medium student who travels from Morena to Mukherjee Nagar with little money and no knowledge of English. Along the way, the story deals with defeat, disappointment, friendship and love.
The film’s focus is not only on passing an exam: its production company describes it as a story about restarting after failure and the effort to change one’s circumstances.
Is 12th Fail based on a true story?
It is based on Anurag Pathak’s book of the same name and draws on the life of Manoj Kumar Sharma, an IPS officer identified as the real-life inspiration in the Australian Classification’s synopsis. That makes the film inspired by a true story, rather than a guarantee that each scene, conversation or plot detail is literal biography.
