12th Fail is an earnest Hindi-language drama about starting over after failure. Vikrant Massey gives its account of aspirant civil servant Manoj Sharma much of its emotional force, while the film’s warmth and stirring turns sometimes edge into sentimentality. Its hope is affecting, though the story’s focus on individual determination cannot stand as proof that hard work alone overcomes poverty or entrenched inequality.
What is 12th Fail about?
Released on 27 October 2023, 12th Fail was written, produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It follows Manoj, a Hindi-medium student from Morena who fails his final school examination and later pursues the UPSC path in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. He has little money and limited English, and the journey is shaped as much by family hardship and setbacks as by his ambition. The film’s official synopsis and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) describe the story and its central struggle (Vinod Chopra Films; IFFI).
The film is inspired by real lives, not a documentary record. IFFI calls it a true-story film, and the Supreme Court of India’s October 2024 newsletter identifies Manoj Kumar Sharma and Shraddha Joshi as the real-life inspirations. That framing gives the drama a personal anchor, but it does not establish that every scene or event is reproduced exactly as it happened (Supreme Court Chronicle).
Where the film finds its emotional force
Vikrant Massey’s grounded lead performance
Massey’s portrayal makes Manoj’s persistence feel like a series of difficult, ordinary choices rather than an effortless march toward success. The film’s Hindi-medium setting, financial constraints and encounter with a demanding exam system give those choices context. Its emotional appeal comes less from the abstract idea of “never giving up” than from watching a young man keep moving through uncertainty.

Friendship and shared struggle
Manoj’s story is not presented in isolation. The friendships around him provide warmth and companionship, broadening the film beyond a solitary success story. That emphasis helps the drama feel generous: encouragement and practical support matter alongside personal resolve.
Does its inspirational message work?
For many viewers, the film’s sincerity is its strength. At the time Rotten Tomatoes was accessed on 4 October 2026, its page displayed 91% from 11 critic reviews and 97% from more than 500 audience ratings. Those figures are a changing snapshot on one platform, not a representative survey or a permanent measure of the film’s reception (Rotten Tomatoes).

The critical response also points to the film’s central tension. The Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta praised its closeness to ground reality and its inspirational life lessons. Leslie Felperin, writing for The Guardian, called it “A warm, if sentimental, paean” to meritocratic success, while noting the setting’s corruption and caste system. Other criticism displayed by Rotten Tomatoes faults the film for leaning too heavily on inspiration and romanticizing struggle. These are individual critical judgments, but they capture a real interpretive question: does the film’s uplifting arc illuminate barriers, or smooth them into a story of personal perseverance?
Both responses can be true. The film’s hope has emotional value, and its attention to hardship prevents it from being a simple triumphal tale. But one person’s success cannot show that individual effort dissolves structural inequality. The drama works best when its optimism is taken as an appeal to persistence—not as a guarantee that persistence makes outcomes fair.

Is 12th Fail suitable for family viewing?
Classification advice depends on the country. Australia’s Classification Board rated the film PG for “Mild themes and coarse language.” Its consumer advice mentions poverty, social inequality, bereavement, police corruption, a verbal reference to domestic violence, some physical striking and threats of gun violence. Australian Classification lists a runtime of 146 minutes; Rotten Tomatoes lists 2 hours 27 minutes, so expect a drama of roughly two hours and 26–27 minutes. Check the classification where you live, especially if choosing the film for younger viewers (Australian Classification; Rotten Tomatoes).
Where can you watch it?
Rotten Tomatoes listed Netflix and Hulu as subscription options when its page was accessed on 4 October 2026. Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time, so check the services available in your region rather than assuming either platform carries the film where you are.

Verdict
12th Fail is a heartfelt, engaging drama carried by Massey’s performance and its attention to friendship amid hardship. Its emotional directness is also its risk: at times, inspiration can make a difficult social reality feel more easily overcome than it is. Viewers open to a sincere, sentimental story about persistence are likely to find it moving; those looking for a more searching examination of structural barriers may find its optimism too neat.
