These eleven picks trace the web-animation culture that grew before YouTube launched in 2005: surreal cartoons, music-driven jokes, stick figures, sprite movies and viral performances. The cutoff here is strict: each example belongs to the pre-2005 scene, though some are series or online phenomena rather than one self-contained cartoon. The surviving historical record supports this curated tour, not a definitive ranking of the era’s greatest works.

What made pre-YouTube Flash animation different?

Flash was a delivery tool, not a single genre. Newgrounds’ automated Flash Portal launched on April 6, 2000, letting artists submit movies and games for immediate public voting. Its early history includes cartoons, music animations, stick movies and sprite movies, each with a different look and audience. The Portal’s timeline is documented in Newgrounds’ history.

That portal culture also made popularity participatory. Newgrounds’ 2001 retrospective describes the “All Your Base” phenomenon as a viral hit that prompted spoofs and tributes by other Flash artists. This was not a formal ranking system for cultural importance; it was a visible cycle of submissions, votes and imitation. See Newgrounds’ 2001 retrospective.

11 pre-2005 picks to revisit

The titles below are a curated set of historically grounded examples, not an objectively ranked top eleven. The surviving institutional histories establish the broad period and context, but do not provide a verified first-publication date for every individual installment. Where an entry is a series or a wider meme, it is identified as such rather than treated as one canonical film.

1. All Your Base

“All Your Base” is best understood as an animation-and-meme phenomenon, not one definitive short. Newgrounds’ 2001 retrospective recalls it as one of the site’s major viral hits and describes Flash artists making spoofs and tributes. Its staying power came from the gap between the source game’s awkwardly translated line and the endlessly reusable joke it became. The retrospective is at Newgrounds.

2. Salad Fingers

David Firth launched Salad Fingers on Newgrounds in 2004 as a lo-fi, unsettling Flash series. Its muted palette, deliberate pacing and strange fixation on ordinary objects made it unlike the loud, punchline-driven cartoons often associated with the era. Scholars Jessica Balanzategui and César Albarrán-Torres analyze its “digital uncanny” style and its early participatory-culture context in their article.

3. Burnt Face Man

Also created by David Firth, Burnt Face Man appeared in Newgrounds’ 2004 Portal retrospective alongside Salad Fingers. Its superhero parody offered a very different comic register: deliberately crude, abrasive and absurd. The historical account records its early Portal reception; it does not establish an episode-by-episode release chronology. See Newgrounds’ 2004 retrospective.

4. Magical Trevor

Weebl’s Magical Trevor is another 2004 entry in Newgrounds’ history. It represents the music-animation side of Flash culture: a compact, catchy song and an intentionally odd visual gag designed to stick in the viewer’s head. Newgrounds lists the work among Weebl’s output for that year, but the cited history does not verify individual episode dates. See Newgrounds’ 2004 retrospective.

5. Foamy the Squirrel

Foamy’s first rants appeared in 2003, according to Newgrounds’ Portal history. The character’s direct-to-camera complaints made the format feel closer to an animated monologue than a conventional plot-driven cartoon. Its inclusion helps show how Flash series could be built around a recurring personality and point of view. See Newgrounds’ Portal history.

6. Numa Numa

“Numa Numa” belongs to the era’s viral-performance culture, not to authored cartoon animation in the ordinary sense. Newgrounds’ annual overview associates the craze with 2004. A careful description distinguishes Gary Brolsma’s performance from the Flash-era circulation and later remakes inspired by it; the source establishes the period association, not a single canonical animation or its first-host details. See Newgrounds’ annual overview.

7. Stick Slayer

Newgrounds’ 2001 retrospective calls out Ben Spurgin’s Stick Slayer movies, a reminder that deliberately simple stick-figure drawings could support action and visual comedy without elaborate character art. The retrospective makes the series a useful snapshot of the form, though it is not a verified item-level release record. See Newgrounds’ 2001 retrospective.

8. Randy Solem’s early sprite movie

Sprite movies used characters and imagery from video games as raw material for new animated scenes. Newgrounds’ 2000 retrospective describes Randy Solem’s first sprite-movie submission and his later prominence in the format. Because the history does not identify the specific submission in the material cited here, this entry is best treated as a doorway into the early sprite-movie scene, not a precise title recommendation. See Newgrounds’ 2000 retrospective.

9. Early Portal cartoons and short films

The Portal’s defining innovation was not one particular cartoon but the publishing loop around thousands of them: creators submitted Flash movies, viewers watched and voted, and the results were visible to the community. Newgrounds dates the automated Portal launch to April 6, 2000. That ecosystem made it possible for animation styles and jokes to spread among creators as well as viewers. See Newgrounds’ history.

10. Flash spoofs and tributes inspired by All Your Base

The response to “All Your Base” was itself part of the phenomenon. Newgrounds’ retrospective describes other Flash artists producing spoofs and tributes, turning an internet joke into a shared prompt for new animations. These works are better understood as a participatory wave than as a single series with one creator. See Newgrounds’ 2001 retrospective.

11. Newgrounds’ early music animations

Music animations formed another recognizable strand of the Portal’s early culture, with short visuals built around songs, sound bites or a repeated musical joke. Newgrounds’ histories distinguish this work from stick and sprite movies, underscoring how little sense it makes to treat all Flash animation as one visual style. The broad account is in Newgrounds’ history.

How the animations spread

Before video-sharing platforms became the default destination, a portal could serve as both host and meeting place. Newgrounds’ early Flash Portal gave creators a direct route to publication and viewers a way to vote on submissions. Viral moments such as “All Your Base” generated further work from other artists, while series such as Salad Fingers could build recognition through returning installments.

David Firth later recalled the early internet as a place where “There were no shortcuts to viral content. No corporate fingers twiddling the algorithms. It was simply attention-grabbing and quality material that rose to the top”. That is his recollection, quoted in an academic article, not a measured account of every site or every successful animation. The quotation appears in Balanzategui and Albarrán-Torres’ article.

Where to watch them now

The original viewing experience and present-day access are not the same thing. Newgrounds describes creators converting classic Flash work to MP4 with Swivel as they prepared for a future without Flash. A video conversion can preserve a cartoon’s moving images and sound, but it cannot necessarily reproduce any interactive elements of the original SWF.

Flash preservation resources named in an archive overview include BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint, the Internet Archive and Ruffle. These are broad preservation efforts, not guarantees that any specific animation is currently playable there. Start with a creator’s official page or a verified archive record, and check whether the version is an original interactive file or a later video conversion. See the Flash archive overview and Newgrounds’ account of Swivel.
