11 Creepy Things You Didn’t Know About the Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, is genuinely historic, tied directly to The Shining, and surrounded by reported hauntings and folklore. The evidence establishes the hotel’s history and the stories it presents to visitors—not that ghosts have been scientifically proven. Here are 11 unsettling facts, with those boundaries kept clear.

11 unsettling facts about the Stanley Hotel

1. It began as a wellness resort, not a haunted attraction

Visit Estes Park says F.O. Stanley built the hotel in 1909 as an upscale resort and wellness destination. Its paranormal reputation came later, after the property had already become an important Rocky Mountain hotel.

2. The founder came looking for a climate cure

Rocky Mountain PBS reports that Freelan Oscar Stanley arrived in Estes Park in 1903 while seeking relief from tuberculosis. He recovered and then decided to build a hotel. That account documents his belief in the local climate; it does not establish that the climate medically cured tuberculosis.

3. Room 217 became part of horror history

Visit Estes Park’s historical account says Stephen King and his wife spent one night in Room 217 in 1974. King’s vivid dream and the experience of staying in the nearly empty hotel helped inspire The Shining.

4. The real hotel inspired a fictional one

King used the Stanley as inspiration for the Overlook Hotel, but the novel is fiction. The fact that he stayed in Room 217 does not mean the novel records actual events at the Stanley or that its supernatural episodes happened there.

5. The famous Jack Nicholson film was not shot there

Visit Estes Park says Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film was not filmed at the Stanley Hotel. The property’s appearance in popular memory comes from King’s connection to the building and from later screen adaptations, not from Kubrick’s production locations.

6. A later Shining adaptation was filmed at the hotel

The hotel says the 1997 television miniseries was filmed at the Stanley. Its official Shining tour compares King’s novel with Kubrick’s 1980 movie and the 1997 miniseries, making the differences in setting and adaptation part of the visitor experience.

7. The ghost tour openly mixes folklore with reported hauntings

The Stanley’s own description says its ghost tour covers reported hauntings and folklore. That wording matters: the hotel is documenting stories and visitor experiences that it presents on a tour, not certifying that supernatural beings exist.

8. The night tour does not mean wandering through guest rooms

The detailed official listing says the walking tours do not enter guest rooms and that the night tour does not go onto guest floors. Routes can change with availability, time, and season, so visitors should verify the live listing before booking.

9. The hotel sells an interactive paranormal investigation

The Stanley’s activities page lists The Overlook Project, described as a three-hour interactive inquiry into supernatural happenings. It is a hotel-listed entertainment experience, not independent scientific validation of paranormal claims.

10. History has its own tour instead of being folded into the ghost walk

The official lineup includes a distinct historic walk covering the building’s history, architecture, folklore, and pop-culture connections. That separation lets visitors explore the documented past without treating every unusual story as evidence of a haunting.

11. The creepiness is partly an attraction the hotel deliberately stages

The Stanley now offers several experiences built around its reputation, including ghost, history, and Shining tours, plus other themed activities. The sources establish that these stories and experiences are marketed attractions; they do not independently prove that the hotel is haunted.

Is the Stanley Hotel haunted?

The responsible answer is that the hotel has a well-documented reputation for hauntings, and the property offers tours built around reported experiences and folklore. The cited historical and tourism sources do not verify the existence of ghosts. Visitors can treat the stories as folklore, entertainment, or personal experience without confusing them with established fact.
