This is a historical interview, not an account of the couple’s life today. First published in STM on 2 December 2012 and republished by PerthNow on 5 September 2014, Joe Spagnolo’s profile describes Louise Pratt and Aram Hosie’s relationship, Hosie’s transition, and their experience of public attention.
When the interview was published
PerthNow’s 5 September 2014 feature marked ten years of STM and identified the original interview’s publication date as 2 December 2012. Pratt was described at the time as a WA Labor senator. The couple’s circumstances and the political context in the story belong to those dates; the profile does not establish what happened in their lives afterward. Read the PerthNow feature.
How Pratt and Hosie described their relationship
In the original interview, Pratt and Hosie described their relationship as an equal partnership and said they had been together for about seven years. The feature also reported that Hosie had been transitioning for about 18 months. Those are personal details reported in the 2012 interview, not measures of transition generally or updates on the couple today.
The couple recalled that people could be preoccupied with their relationship and with “whether we are straight or not.” This captures the attention they described receiving; it is not evidence about public opinion as a whole.

Hosie’s boundary around transition details
Hosie chose not to discuss the specifics of his transition, describing them as private medical history. As quoted in the interview, he said: “I do not discuss the specifics of what my transition involved.” The profile therefore offers no basis for inferring or supplying those details.
Visibility, advocacy and privacy
Pratt said the couple had received correspondence from LGBTQI people who found their visibility encouraging. She described the message she hoped young people would take from their story: “For young lesbian, gay and trans people in particular, our story sends a really positive message to them that they are going to be OK.” This is Pratt’s account of the responses they received and the meaning she attached to them, not a measured finding about the interview’s impact.

The profile presents public visibility alongside the couple’s wish to keep parts of their personal lives private. Their willingness to speak about their relationship did not mean they felt obliged to disclose intimate medical information or every decision about their future.
What the 2014 feature said about family and marriage
The anniversary feature reported that the couple expected their first child in mid-October 2014. That was an expectation at the time, not confirmation of what followed or a statement about their family today.
