Several of the wrestlers who defined the 1980s are no longer alive; others left full-time competition long ago. This lineup revisits ten major names from that era and separates what is established about their lives and careers from what the available sources do not confirm about their present-day activities. “Now” is framed as of October 2026.
How this lineup reflects 1980s wrestling
The decade’s stars filled different roles: Hulk Hogan became the central champion of WWE’s expansion, Andre the Giant was a singular attraction, and Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat produced one of WrestleMania III’s defining matches. Ric Flair became synonymous with the NWA and WCW, while Roddy Piper made the antagonist’s role an attraction in its own right. This is an editorial selection of prominent performers, not a definitive ranking of every wrestler from the decade.
WWE’s biographies are useful for its own career history, but they do not establish a living performer’s current schedule or personal circumstances. Where the sources support a legacy account rather than a current update, that distinction is made explicit.
What are these wrestlers up to now?
Hulk Hogan: remembered for Hulkamania
Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik for the WWE Championship on January 23, 1984, and became the public face of the company’s 1980s boom. WWE’s account of his career traces major rivalries with Piper, Andre, the Ultimate Warrior and Savage. WWE announced Hogan’s death in 2025; his place in the era is best understood through his championship run and the cultural reach of Hulkamania, not as a current performer. WWE’s Hogan biography and its announcement of his death document that history.

Andre the Giant: a lasting attraction
Andre’s size and presence made him a singular draw during WWE’s expansion in the 1980s. He became the first inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame, one year after his death. His “now” is necessarily a legacy story: he is remembered as one of wrestling’s most recognizable attractions. WWE’s biography provides the company’s account of his career and Hall of Fame recognition.
Randy Savage: a defining rival and showman
Savage combined a distinctive voice and look with high-profile championship runs. His WrestleMania VII match against the Ultimate Warrior was billed as a career-ending match. Savage died in 2011, as noted in the Associated Press’s retrospective on Hogan and the generation of 1980s stars. His ongoing presence is through recorded matches and wrestling history, not current appearances. See WWE’s career biography and the Associated Press retrospective.

Roddy Piper: the antagonist audiences came to see
Piper’s provocative villain persona helped make him one of the era’s most compelling foils. His career extended beyond the 1980s: WWE records a 2006 tag-team title win with Ric Flair. Piper died in 2015, according to the Associated Press retrospective. Those are career and legacy markers, not evidence of present-day activity. WWE’s biography covers his wrestling career; the AP retrospective reports his death.
Ultimate Warrior: remembered for defeating Hogan
The Ultimate Warrior was one of the decade’s biggest stars, known for explosive entrances and an intense in-ring persona. His WrestleMania VI victory over Hogan was a defining moment. Warrior died in 2014, as the Associated Press recounts. His current place in wrestling is historical rather than active. The AP retrospective covers his place in the era and death.

Bret Hart: full-time in-ring career ended after injury
Hart rose to prominence with the Hart Foundation before becoming a singles champion. WWE says a severe injury and a stroke in 2002 led him to retire from full-time in-ring competition. That establishes why he stopped wrestling full time; it does not, by itself, establish his current projects, appearances or health as of October 2026. WWE’s Hart biography recounts his career and retirement from full-time competition.
Ric Flair: a major figure in NWA and WCW history
Flair’s 1980s legacy is rooted in his NWA and WCW career, the Four Horsemen and his celebrated rivalry with Steamboat. WWE’s biography documents those milestones but does not confirm a current wrestling schedule, media commitment or partnership. Treat present-day claims about his work as unverified unless supported by current reporting. See WWE’s Ric Flair biography.

Jake Roberts: the DDT and psychological character work
Roberts arrived in WWE in 1986 and became known for a measured, unsettling promo style and the DDT. WWE’s biography establishes those career details, but it does not establish his current role or activity. Claims that he currently performs, manages or appears for a promotion need a more recent source. See WWE’s Jake Roberts biography.
Ricky Steamboat: retired, then returned for matches
Steamboat’s 1989 title series with Flair and his WrestleMania III match against Savage are central to his legacy. WWE says he retired in 1994, then returned for matches in 2009. That history shows why retirement from regular competition should not be confused with never wrestling again; it does not establish his current 2026 activities. In its biography, WWE quotes Ric Flair: “Ricky Steamboat had everything — charisma, work rate, intensity and one of the best bodies in our business,” followed by, “He was just amazing.” See WWE’s Ricky Steamboat biography.

Why this is a nine-person roundup
The title promises ten wrestlers, but the available sources establish only nine profiles with enough career and status information to make a responsible roundup. Jim Duggan is a plausible name for the decade, and WWE’s biography describes his 1987 entry to the company and his 2×4 persona. That historical account does not establish what he is doing now, so presenting him as a verified current update would overstate the evidence. See WWE’s roster of biographies for the source material used to identify the suggested substitute.
