Harvey Wippleman was the WWE persona of Bruno Lauer, a wrestling worker whose career began setting up rings and grew into an unusual run as a manager, referee and backstage hand. These ten milestones trace how he reached WWE, the storylines that made him memorable and the work he did beyond the spotlight.
1. Harvey Wippleman was Bruno Lauer
The character was not Lauer’s birth name: WWE identifies Harvey Wippleman as the wrestling persona of Bruno Lauer. That distinction matters because much of the character’s backstory was part of wrestling entertainment, while Lauer’s career path is documented in WWE’s March 19, 2013 profile.
2. His first wrestling job was setting up the ring
Lauer told WWE he entered the business in 1979 as a member of a ring crew for a carnival-touring promotion. The job involved setting up and taking down the ring—a practical starting point that put him inside the wrestling business before he became a performer or manager.
3. Memphis and Jerry Lawler helped shape his career
WWE dates Lauer’s major break in the Memphis territory to 1984. He credited Jerry “The King” Lawler with teaching him the business and opening doors. “I owe him my career. Every bit of knowledge, every break is from him. I owe him everything, 100 percent,” Lauer said in WWE’s profile.

4. He worked under several names before becoming Downtown Bruno
Lauer’s early wrestling names included Dr. Lennerd Spazzinsky. He later drew inspiration from the television character Downtown Brown and adopted the name Downtown Bruno. It was one of several steps toward the better-known WWE character, rather than a name he used from the start.
5. The name Harvey Wippleman began with a mistaken introduction
According to WWE’s account, the intended name was Harvey Wipple. Gorilla Monsoon reportedly misspoke while introducing Lauer to Howard Finkel, saying “Harvey Wippleman” instead. The name made it onto television and stuck. Lauer recalled: “He misspoke, but it was on TV and that was that.”

6. Sid Justice helped bring him to WWE
WWE says Sid Justice recommended that officials give Lauer, his former manager, a tryout. Lauer then appeared with Sid against Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VIII in 1992, in the event’s co-main event. WWE’s profile reports that more than 60,000 people attended the show at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.
Lauer described the scale of the event without treating it as a different kind of job: “It’s a privilege and an honor to be featured in a WrestleMania main event. But I’m funny. I work just as hard if I’m in a National Guard armory in front of 90 people. It’s the exact same job, just on a different scale.”

7. He managed Kamala and Giant Gonzales in Undertaker storylines
Two of Wippleman’s most recognizable WWE programs centered on The Undertaker. WWE’s retrospective connects his management of Kamala to the first Casket Match, at Survivor Series 1992. It also recounts Wippleman bringing Giant Gonzales into the conflict, including the WrestleMania IX program in 1993. These storylines made Wippleman a recurring presence in some of The Undertaker’s early marquee rivalries.
8. He managed Bertha Faye to the Women’s Championship
Wippleman managed Bertha Faye when she won the WWE Women’s Championship. WWE’s profile describes Lauer as the only man to hold the title, an unusual distinction tied to the on-screen storyline—not a conventional championship reign as a wrestler. The title belonged to Faye; Wippleman’s role was her manager.

9. His work expanded beyond the manager character
WWE’s 2013 profile says Lauer later worked as a referee and handled backstage errands and production support. It reported that he had not been a regular in WWE rings since 2000, while noting he had not left the company as of the profile’s publication. That account establishes his historical shift in duties; it does not establish his employment status today.

Wippleman and WWE ring announcer Howard Finkel had an on-screen rivalry that included a 1995 Raw Tuxedo Match. WWE’s April 16, 2020 obituary for Finkel records the match. The rivalry was a wrestling storyline, not a complete account of their relationship: WWE later listed an After the Bell episode dated May 7, 2020 in which Wippleman reflected on Finkel’s importance to the WWE family.
