Clarence Mason was the wrestling persona of Herman Stevens, a practicing attorney whose legal background became the foundation of his manager character. Best known as the Nation of Domination’s lawyer, Mason also represented Owen Hart and Yokozuna before Stevens left wrestling and returned to legal work, according to WWE’s 2007 retrospective.

1. Clarence Mason was Herman Stevens’s wrestling persona

WWE identified the manager Clarence Mason as attorney Herman Stevens. The character brought a lawyer’s credentials—and an obnoxious courtroom manner—to professional wrestling.

2. Stevens had dreamed of getting into wrestling since childhood

Stevens told WWE that becoming a wrestler had been a childhood dream. His eventual route into the business was not a straight path from fan to performer: he was already pursuing a legal career when an opportunity arose.

3. Ernie Ladd helped him get a meeting with WWE

Stevens said he befriended wrestler Ernie Ladd while in law school. Ladd arranged a meeting with WWE, and Stevens went to New York to meet Vince McMahon. That introduction helped turn a long-held ambition into a job in wrestling.

4. He practiced law while beginning his wrestling career

Stevens told WWE, “I’ve been practicing law since October 1993, and I was working for the prosecutor’s office when I first started in wrestling.” His legal work was real, not simply a backstory invented for Mason.

5. At first, he fit tapings around his legal job

Stevens recalled taking sick days to attend wrestling tapings while still working at the prosecutor’s office. When colleagues began noticing his absences, he left the job and joined WWE full-time.

6. Mason was the Nation of Domination’s lawyer

Mason’s most prominent role was as legal counsel for the Nation of Domination. D-Lo Brown recalled the group having Mason as its lawyer, and WWE’s retrospective likewise describes Mason as the faction’s legal counsel. His professional credentials gave the manager character a distinctive purpose: he could serve the group as its on-screen attorney, not just as a spokesperson.

7. He was part of the Nation’s early incarnation

The Nation’s membership changed over time. WWE’s 2019 oral history places Mason alongside Crush and PG-13 in the multicultural incarnation introduced at the 1997 Royal Rumble. Brown also recalled Mason among the members when Brown joined around January 1997. These recollections locate Mason in the group’s early phase, rather than suggesting its roster stayed fixed.

8. His clients included Owen Hart and Yokozuna

Mason’s attorney-manager role extended beyond the Nation. WWE’s retrospective says he also served as legal counsel for Owen Hart and Yokozuna, making the character useful to wrestlers outside the faction.

9. Stevens later described his departure from the Nation as the group changed

In a 2009 interview excerpt reproduced in a ProWrestling.net recap, Stevens said that D-Lo Brown and Rocky Maivia became part of the changing group and that he was “out.” He recalled being disappointed, while also accepting some blame for not handling backstage politics better. That is Stevens’s later account of his departure, not an independently established explanation of WWE’s backstage decisions.

10. After a brief WCW run, WWE reported that he returned to law

WWE’s February 7, 2007 retrospective reported that Stevens had a short run in WCW, then went to South Florida and resumed practicing law. It does not establish his employment status today. Reflecting on the change, Stevens told WWE, “What I did in wrestling was for me; the work I do now is for others.”
