This is a mood-based selection, not an objective ranking; choose the kind of romantic story you want rather than expecting every film to feel light or end happily.
For conversation, chemistry, and courtship
Before Sunrise (1995): a wistful night of conversation
In Richard Linklater’s film, a chance encounter brings two young strangers together for a night of walking and talking. The story is deliberately intimate rather than plot-heavy: its appeal comes from the changing rhythm of their conversation and the sense of possibility between them. Choose it for a quiet, reflective romance built around chemistry and shared time. Criterion Collection describes it as the opening film of the Before Trilogy.
Pride & Prejudice (2005): sparkling period courtship
Keira Knightley stars in this adaptation of Jane Austen’s love story, where attraction develops amid social judgment and first impressions. The polished period setting, sharp romantic tension, and gradual shifts in understanding give the film a satisfying dramatic arc. It is a strong choice for viewers who want wit and courtship rather than modern-day romance. Focus Features lists its U.S. release date as November 11, 2005, and its runtime as 2 hours 9 minutes. For spectacle and sweeping emotion
Moulin Rouge! (2001): maximalist musical romance
A young writer falls for an ambitious showgirl in Baz Luhrmann’s heightened musical romance. Songs, theatrical visuals, and rapid shifts in energy make the style part of the attraction; this is a deliberately extravagant love story, not a restrained period drama. Pick it when you want a romance carried by music and spectacle. 20th Century Studios classifies the film as a drama, musical, and romance.

Atonement (2007): serious, emotionally costly love
This drama follows love caught up in misunderstanding and the consequences of a damaging accusation. Its sweeping scale and somber emotional register make it better suited to viewers ready for a serious, potentially tragic story than anyone seeking an uncomplicated comfort watch. Focus Features describes it as an epic story of love and lists a runtime of 2 hours 3 minutes. Focus Features
Love Story (1970): classic melodrama
Based on Erich Segal’s bestselling novel, this romance takes an earnest, emotionally weighty approach to love. Its appeal is its directness: it asks the viewer to invest in the relationship and its stakes rather than in comic complications or visual showmanship. Choose it for a classic melodrama and be prepared for a tearful mood. Paramount notes that the film received a 4K restoration for its 50th anniversary. Paramount Pictures

For sacrifice, longing, and wartime stakes
Casablanca (1942): romance under pressure
Set against wartime danger, Casablanca places past love beside the urgent question of whether to help a former lover and her husband escape. That conflict gives the romance its momentum: private feeling is tested by obligations beyond the couple. Choose it for a classic story of longing and sacrifice rather than a light date-night comedy. The Week outlines the dilemma at the heart of the film.

A good fit when you want a warm, witty watch rather than heightened tragedy.
In the Mood for Love (2000): restrained longing
