These ten rivalries are an informed editorial selection—not an official ranking—chosen for their impact on wrestlers’ careers, championship stakes, recurrence, major match landmarks and their illustration of WWE’s changing stars and presentation.
1. John Cena vs. Kurt Angle
Cena’s first WWE television challenge came against established star Kurt Angle, immediately giving the newcomer a formidable foil. WWE writer Bobby Melok put the era’s origin point succinctly: “Two of the first words out of John Cena’s mouth on WWE television were ‘ruthless aggression.’” WWE connects that debut encounter to an era-defining rivalry, making it a natural starting point for a period in which new faces were being positioned to lead the company. WWE’s retrospective on the era and its Cena coverage provide the framing.
2. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
At SummerSlam 2002, Shawn Michaels returned to in-ring competition after four years away, facing former friend Triple H in an unsanctioned Street Fight. The personal history and violent stipulation made the match an early-era landmark, while Michaels’ return brought a celebrated veteran into a period increasingly shaped by a new generation. WWE’s SummerSlam 2002 coverage and retrospective coverage of the rivalry document its importance.
3. Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar
Guerrero’s challenge to Brock Lesnar centered on a sharp contrast: a resourceful underdog pursuing the WWE Championship against a physically dominant champion. At No Way Out 2004, Guerrero defeated Lesnar to win the title, giving the rivalry a consequential payoff and one of the era’s defining championship outcomes. WWE recounts the result in its No Way Out 2004 coverage and places the matchup in its era retrospective.

4. Batista vs. Triple H
Batista’s rise from a member of Evolution to a world champion was one of the period’s clearest star-making arcs. He defeated Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21, turning a developing wrestler into a main-event champion. The result is documented in WWE’s WrestleMania 21 coverage; WWE also identifies Batista’s ascent as a defining era development in its retrospective.
5. John Cena vs. JBL
JBL, a prominent SmackDown antagonist and long-reigning WWE Champion, gave Cena a high-profile obstacle as Cena emerged as a franchise star. The rivalry’s appeal lay in that contrast: a brash, established champion against a challenger whose momentum was changing the company’s landscape. WWE’s era feature highlights JBL’s battles with Cena and his place in the period. It describes JBL’s 280-day championship reign as a record that remained unbroken until 2018; that figure is WWE’s characterization, not a measure of the rivalry’s quality.

6. Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio
Not every defining rivalry depended on a world-title chase. Guerrero and Mysterio’s feud drew its tension from a changing emotional dynamic: WWE describes Guerrero as shifting from a likable rule-breaker into a frightening antagonist. That turn gave the matchup a more unsettling register than the era’s straightforward challenger-versus-champion stories. WWE discusses the rivalry and Guerrero’s shifting persona in its Ruthless Aggression retrospective.
7. John Cena vs. Edge
Edge became a durable foil for Cena through championship contests and a clash of personas. Their rivalry took a decisive turn in 2006 when Edge cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, and it produced a major TLC match at Unforgiven that year. Those landmarks capture both the era’s appetite for sudden title shifts and the personal escalation between its leading rivals. WWE recounts the rivalry and cash-in in its Cena coverage and documents the Unforgiven 2006 match.

8. The Undertaker vs. Edge
The Undertaker and Edge contested a long series of World Heavyweight Championship battles, culminating in a rivalry that supplied one of the era’s most enduring late-period images: their WrestleMania XXIV match. WWE’s account also recalls their Hell in a Cell conclusion at SummerSlam 2008, giving the feud a clear endpoint near the practical close of this period. See WWE’s WrestleMania XXIV coverage and Undertaker retrospective on the rivalry.
9. John Cena vs. Randy Orton
Cena and Orton represented the same emerging generation: both developed in Ohio Valley Wrestling and debuted in WWE in 2002. Their first one-on-one WWE encounter came at SummerSlam 2007, followed by repeated, brutal clashes. The rivalry makes the era’s generational shift especially visible, but it did not end with the period; later chapters should not be counted as Ruthless Aggression-era matches. WWE discusses their shared background and rivalry in its Cena coverage and Orton coverage.

Orton’s rivalry with The Undertaker is a stronger fit for this list than Cena versus Brock Lesnar: WWE identifies the latter as a rivalry that became legendary after Lesnar returned in 2012, outside the period used here. Orton versus Undertaker brings an established legend into conflict with one of the era’s rising stars, matching the broader shift in WWE’s roster. WWE’s era retrospective identifies both men among the period’s defining figures. The available official coverage cited here supports that contextual fit, but does not establish a complete chronology or a definitive ranking of their feud against the other entries.
