These ten achievements trace that range in chronological and career context; they are an editorial selection, not an official ranking.
1. She built an early audience as a dancer
Before her recording career, Lopez became publicly visible as a dancer on the sketch-comedy series In Living Color. The role put her on television and helped establish the performance skills that would carry across her work in music and film. GRAMMY.com’s career retrospective places that dance work before her music debut.

2. She broke through on screen as Selena
Lopez’s portrayal of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 biographical film Selena was her breakthrough film role, according to GRAMMY.com. The role made her the lead of a major biographical drama and connected her career to a story of lasting importance in Latin music.
3. She turned screen visibility into a recording career
Lopez released her debut album, On the 6, in 1999. Its lead single, “If You Had My Love,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to Sony Music UK’s artist biography. That transition from acting and dance to a successful pop release established music as a central part of her career.

4. She achieved a simultaneous film-and-album milestone
In 2001, Lopez’s album J.Lo and her romantic comedy The Wedding Planner arrived in the same week. GRAMMY.com describes her as the first woman to have a No. 1 album and film at the same time. This is a reported U.S. chart-and-box-office distinction, not a claim that both works topped the same chart or that the achievement applies to every market.
5. She built a sustained catalog of pop hits
Her career was not defined by one successful single. The GRAMMY.com retrospective and Sony Music both describe a continuing run of successful singles and albums. “If You Had My Love” is a specific chart milestone supported by Sony; broader song counts or additional peak positions are not needed to recognize the achievement of building a long-running recording catalog.

6. Her performance in Selena earned major industry recognition
Lopez received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Selena, according to Biography.com. The nomination marked formal recognition for the same role that established her as a film lead.
7. She returned to acclaimed film work with Hustlers
In 2019, Lopez played a veteran dancer in the crime drama Hustlers. Biography.com records a Golden Globe nomination for the performance. Caesars Entertainment’s 2025 residency announcement says the film opened to more than $32 million and earned more than $100 million worldwide; those box-office figures are reported by Caesars Entertainment.

8. She has worked across multiple entertainment roles
Lopez’s career encompasses acting, singing, dancing, producing and television work. The descriptions vary by source, but both GRAMMY.com and amfAR present her as a multi-role entertainer. The achievement is not simply the number of fields: it is the way she has continued to work across them over decades.
9. Her Las Vegas residency made a substantial live-performance mark
Lopez’s Las Vegas residency brought her music and stage performance to a dedicated run of shows. GRAMMY.com reported more than $100 million in ticket sales over a three-year residency. The figure is the publication’s report about that residency, rather than a measure of her total live-performance earnings.

10. She sustained an international career across generations
Lopez’s path from dance television to Selena, a successful recording career, later film work and Las Vegas performances illustrates an unusual degree of longevity across entertainment formats. Her releases and film roles have reached audiences beyond one medium, as reflected in the career accounts from Sony Music and GRAMMY.com. This is a qualitative assessment of the breadth and duration of her career, not a quantified record.
