There is no definitive count of cult-film fans, so “biggest” needs a clear yardstick. This list uses a cross-list ranking: List Obsession compared 29 ranked lists and compiled the films that appeared most consistently. Its top ten offer a useful consensus view—not a census of viewers or a final measure of fandom.
How this cult-movie ranking works
Film scholars and programmers do not agree on one definition of a cult film. A dedicated audience is a common thread, but fans may gather around midnight screenings, repeat viewings, genre communities, distinctive aesthetics, political interests, or even films embraced as “badfilm.” Cornell Cinema outlines these varied paths in its Fall 2023 overview of cult classics.

For a repeatable ranking, List Obsession compared 29 ranked lists and recorded the films’ placements. Its method page, last updated March 25, 2024, says 158 films appeared on at least two lists. That process ranks agreement among selected lists; it does not count fans, ticket buyers, or current viewers, and the result depends on which lists were chosen and how their rankings were combined. The titles below follow the order in List Obsession’s compiled viewing checklist.
The 10 movies with the biggest cult following
-
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Few films make fandom as visible as this musical comedy-horror. Its cult grew through midnight screenings and audience participation: costumes, shouted responses, dancing, shadow casts, and props turned watching into a shared event. The film initially disappointed at release, but midnight screenings began at New York’s Waverly Theater in April 1976. HISTORY’s account describes how the rituals and the sense of belonging helped shape its lasting following. Journalist June Thomas recalled the experience this way: “You weren’t just sitting in a darkened room. You were part of something.”

-
The Big Lebowski (1998)
The Coen brothers’ shaggy comedy became a durable fan favorite through quotable dialogue, eccentric characters, and the laid-back persona of “the Dude.” Its presence in repertory programming offers a sign of continued theatrical interest: Boxoffice Pro’s report on the 2026 Art House Convergence survey also lists it among the top-grossing repertory films at member cinemas, according to Rentrak. That is evidence of programming and box-office persistence in that setting, not a measure of its total fan base.
-
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Quentin Tarantino’s crime film built a following around its interlocking stories, nonlinear structure, sharp dialogue, and dense network of pop-cultural references. Its distinctive style invites close attention and repeat viewing, while its memorable scenes and lines have made it a frequent point of reference for fans.
-
This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
Rob Reiner’s mockumentary follows a fictional heavy-metal band whose confidence repeatedly outruns its competence. Its deadpan treatment of rock-star excess and its quotable jokes have made it a touchstone for comedy fans and musicians. List Obsession says the film appeared on 18 of the 29 lists it compared, a measure of its recurrence in those rankings rather than the size of its audience.

-
Blade Runner (1982)
Ridley Scott’s science-fiction noir draws devoted viewers with its rain-soaked vision of a future city, ambiguous questions about humanity, and striking visual design. Its layered atmosphere and interpretive uncertainty reward revisiting, giving fans plenty to debate beyond the plot.

Fight Club (1999)
David Fincher’s adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel pairs abrasive satire with a tightly constructed story about masculinity, consumer culture, and alienation. Its twist and provocative imagery have fueled discussion and repeat viewing. The film’s appeal is also a reminder that a devoted following is not the same as endorsing every character’s worldview.
-
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Stanley Kubrick’s dystopian film is known for its stylized violence, invented slang, and unsettling questions about free will and social control. Its deliberately artificial look and challenging subject matter have attracted viewers interested in provocative, formally distinctive cinema.
Rank #3
-
Donnie Darko (2001)
Richard Kelly’s enigmatic story of a troubled teenager, a looming disaster, and a mysterious figure in a rabbit suit gained a following through ambiguity and discussion. Viewers have returned to its clues and competing interpretations, a route to cult status built around later discovery and debate. List Obsession says it appeared on 18 of its 29 source lists.
-
Clerks (1994)
Kevin Smith’s low-budget comedy follows two convenience-store clerks through an uneventful workday that becomes a source of sharp, irreverent conversation. Its scrappy production and talk-driven humor helped it resonate with viewers drawn to independent filmmaking and characters who feel like outsiders rather than polished movie heroes.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Monty Python’s comic take on Arthurian legend turns the quest for the Holy Grail into a chain of absurd sketches, visual gags, and quotable exchanges. Its humor rewards repeated viewing and sharing favorite scenes, making it an enduring gathering point for fans of British surreal comedy.

Why cult followings take different forms
These films do not share one route to fandom. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the clearest example of participatory screening culture; The Big Lebowski has endured as a repertory title; Donnie Darko invites interpretation; and films such as Blade Runner and A Clockwork Orange draw viewers to distinctive worlds and formal choices. Comedy, genre communities, word of mouth, repeated viewing, and audience rituals can all contribute, but no single ingredient guarantees a cult following.
There is evidence of continued appetite for this kind of cinema among a specific audience. Boxoffice Pro reported that 98% of surveyed art-house moviegoers enjoy repertory screenings at their preferred theater; among repertory attendees, 81% wanted anniversary titles and 73% wanted cult classics. These are findings from the Art House Convergence 2026 national audience survey, not statistics for moviegoers as a whole.
