This ranking weighs emotional force, artistic achievement, theological engagement, cultural influence where documented, and how fully each film commits to its approach to faith. It includes scripture adaptations, stories of saints and clergy, and films that challenge religious certainty—not just movies about Jesus. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive consensus: the BFI’s thematic selection and Christianity Today’s Jesus-film list use different frames.
10. Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
This crime drama makes Christian service practical rather than spectacular. A priest tries to steer vulnerable young people away from crime, putting pastoral care at the center of a story about social responsibility. Its power comes from the tension between the pull of street life and the possibility of moral change. The BFI includes it among its films about Christianity for this grounded account of faith at work in a community.

9. Francesco, giullare di Dio (1950)
Roberto Rossellini’s film follows Francis of Assisi and his companions through ten loosely connected episodes. Instead of building toward a single dramatic conversion or confrontation, it finds meaning in humility, shared life, and small acts of joy. That episodic form is part of the point: holiness appears as a way of living with others, not merely as a grand event. The BFI highlights the film’s simplicity and its attention to Francis and his followers.
8. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
Martin Scorsese’s film is among the most confrontational entries here because it presents Jesus through an imagined human struggle. Its temptation sequence is an artistic scenario, not a claim about the biblical record. The BFI describes the film as an attempt to humanize Jesus and notes the objections provoked by that premise. Its power lies partly in the friction it creates between artistic interpretation, doctrine, and what viewers believe a Jesus film should be allowed to imagine.
#1 Best Overall
- JESUS REVOLUTION tells the true story of a national spiritual awakening in the early 1970's and its origins within a community of teenaged hippies in Southern California.
7. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent film concentrates on Joan’s trial and execution rather than on battlefield spectacle. Its visual intensity draws attention to her inner life as she faces interrogation and suffering. The result makes martyrdom less an abstract symbol than an experience the viewer must sit with. The BFI’s account emphasizes how the film’s style directs attention toward Joan’s spiritual interior.
6. Diary of a Country Priest (1951)
Robert Bresson’s film follows a young priest through the difficulties of parish life. His diary and voiceover keep the story close to his thoughts, making vocation feel solitary and strenuous rather than triumphant. Faith here is tested in the everyday work of trying to serve people who may not understand or welcome him. The BFI points to the diary form and inward perspective as central to the film’s portrait of endurance.
Rank #2
5. Winter Light (1963)
Ingmar Bergman’s pastor faces spiritual crisis while continuing to conduct religious services. The film asks what ritual means when the person performing it is struggling to believe and when suffering seems to resist easy explanation. Its austerity gives little comfort, but that refusal is also its strength: faith is treated as a difficult condition, not a tidy resolution. The BFI describes it as a portrait of a pastor confronting suffering and uncertainty about religious ritual.
4. The Gospel According to St Matthew (1964)
Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film is a direct adaptation of the Gospel of Matthew, but its form is distinctive. The BFI says Pasolini took dialogue from scripture verbatim and paired it with an eclectic soundtrack; Christianity Today notes that nearly every line comes from Matthew. A visual approach informed by figurative art and neorealism gives the film both an austere and an immediate quality. Christianity Today argues that its realism brings out the revolutionary character of Christ’s message. It ranks highly for the way its artistic choices make a familiar text feel urgent without treating the film as a substitute for scripture.

3. Ordet (1955)
Carl Theodor Dreyer’s drama places a family among sharply contrasting approaches to faith, doubt, and religious conviction. Its measured pace makes those differences consequential rather than rhetorical, and its conclusion centers on miracle. The ending is powerful because the film has made belief feel fragile and contested before asking the viewer to confront the possibility of the miraculous. The BFI describes the family’s divisions and the film’s miracle-centered conclusion as its defining elements.
2. The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Mel Gibson’s film focuses on the final hours of Jesus’ life, making bodily suffering its dominant emotional register. That intensity gives the story a devotional force for some viewers and an unsettling severity for others; it is a very different approach from the spare scriptural adaptation at number four. The Associated Press reported in December 2025 that the film had remained the highest-grossing R-rated film in the United States and Canada for two decades. That is a dated regional comparison, not a claim about its current worldwide ranking or a box-office total.
Rank #4
1. Ordet’s rival in spiritual reach: The Gospel According to St Matthew? Why these films rank differently
Rankings of Christian cinema often mix unlike things: direct Gospel adaptations, stories about saints and clergy, devotional depictions, and works that question religious belief. The BFI’s Christianity selection and Christianity Today’s Jesus-film list are useful precisely because they reveal different boundaries and priorities. The Associated Press likewise noted in December 2025 that films exploring religious themes are not always broadly considered “religious films.” This list therefore treats power as a blend of craft, emotional effect, and serious engagement with faith, rather than as a measure of doctrinal agreement or popularity alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a film for your starting point
- For a direct Gospel adaptation: Start with The Gospel According to St Matthew, whose dialogue closely follows Matthew.
- For faith under pressure: Choose Winter Light or Diary of a Country Priest, both centered on clergy confronting difficult inner and outward lives.
- For a story about Christian practice beyond the Gospels: Francesco, giullare di Dio and Angels with Dirty Faces focus on community, humility, and service.
- For challenging interpretation: The Last Temptation of Christ makes its imagined premise explicit and invites debate about artistic freedom and Christian belief.
These films take markedly different approaches, so “best Jesus film” and “most powerful movies about Christianity” are not interchangeable questions. Streaming availability varies by title and region; check the current catalog in your location rather than assuming a particular service carries them.
