Randy Orton’s most iconic moments range from defining his Legend Killer persona to championship breakthroughs and split-second RKOs. This ranking weighs each moment’s impact on his career, match stakes, recognizability and distinctiveness across eras; the order is an editorial judgment, not an official WWE ranking.
10. Orton catches Rey Mysterio in midair with an RKO (2006)
On March 24, 2006, Orton caught Rey Mysterio with an RKO in the middle of Mysterio’s West Coast Pop. WWE later included the counter in its retrospective of punishing RKOs. It is a showcase of the move’s suddenness: Mysterio was already airborne, and Orton turned the attack into a finish in an instant. The moment ranks below the larger career milestones because it is a visual highlight rather than a major title result. WWE’s RKO retrospective
9. Orton counters Jeff Hardy at the Royal Rumble (2008)
At the 2008 Royal Rumble, Jeff Hardy attempted a Twist of Fate, but Orton countered with an RKO. WWE’s account captures the appeal of the sequence: a familiar setup became a sudden reversal, reinforcing the RKO as Orton’s signature. It is one of his clearest early examples of making the move feel dangerous even when an opponent appeared to have control. WWE’s five-RKO feature
8. Orton hits Cena with an RKO onto a steel chair (2007)
Orton’s chair-assisted RKO on John Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event became a turning point in their rivalry. WWE later described the moment as a career turning point for Orton, but it was not a match victory; its importance lies in the escalation it represented. The attack made the feud feel more personal and dangerous ahead of SummerSlam. WWE’s turning-points retrospective

7. Orton reverses Seth Rollins into an RKO at WrestleMania 31 (2015)
At WrestleMania 31, Seth Rollins launched into a springboard attack and Orton intercepted him with an RKO. WWE includes it among Orton’s standout RKOs. The counter is memorable because it depends on timing as much as power: Orton caught Rollins in the air and brought him down before the attack could land. It also gave the signature move a distinct late-career showcase, rather than repeating an earlier RKO highlight. WWE’s five-RKO feature
6. Orton loses to Triple H in the WrestleMania 25 main event (2009)
The teacher-pupil rivalry between Orton and Triple H reached the main event of WrestleMania 25, where Triple H pinned Orton. This belongs on the list as a consequential rivalry moment, not as an Orton triumph. WWE’s event retrospective records the result, while the match’s place at the top of the card marks how far Orton’s character and feud had risen. WWE’s WrestleMania 25 retrospective

5. Orton retains the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 24 (2008)
Orton entered WrestleMania 24 as WWE Champion and retained the title in a triple threat against Triple H and John Cena. The result stands out because he left a high-profile WrestleMania match still champion, rather than losing the title in a one-on-one defense. WWE’s corporate retrospective confirms the outcome. 4. Orton’s RKO nearly ends Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak (2005)
At WrestleMania 21, Orton turned Undertaker’s attempted chokeslam into an RKO. Undertaker kicked out, later reversed Orton’s Tombstone attempt and won the match. The RKO is remembered as a near-ending of Undertaker’s WrestleMania record—not the end of it. That distinction matters: the moment’s drama came from how close Orton appeared to come, while Undertaker ultimately preserved his record. WWE’s match recap

3. Orton becomes the youngest World Heavyweight Champion (2004)
On August 15, 2004, Orton defeated Chris Benoit at SummerSlam, finishing the match with an RKO and becoming the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history at that time. WWE’s retrospective identifies the record but does not give an age figure, so none is added here. The reign was brief: Orton lost the title to Triple H the following month at Unforgiven. Even so, the win remains his clearest early career milestone, transforming a rising member of Evolution into a world champion. WWE’s SummerSlam-era retrospective
2. The Legend Killer’s attack on Mick Foley at WrestleMania XX (2004)
Orton’s Legend Killer persona came into focus through his conflict with Mick Foley. At WrestleMania XX, Orton hit Foley with an RKO during the six-person handicap match, helping Evolution defeat Foley and The Rock. WWE’s retrospective describes Foley as the name at the top of Orton’s hit list. The moment made the persona’s premise vivid: Orton was positioning himself as the young star who could take down established names. It also tied a defining character conflict to a major WrestleMania result. WWE’s Evolution retrospective

1. Daniel Bryan wins the WrestleMania 30 main event (2014)
Orton’s WrestleMania 30 title defense became a triple threat with Batista and Daniel Bryan after Bryan defeated Triple H to qualify. WWE singled out the Batista Bomb-RKO combination on Bryan as one of its favorite moments from the event. Bryan ultimately won the match and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, so the sequence is not an Orton victory; its significance is how Orton’s title reign and a major WrestleMania story converged in one memorable beat. Several entries feature the RKO, but they do different work in Orton’s story: it helped launch the Legend Killer persona, delivered a world-title breakthrough, nearly toppled Undertaker at WrestleMania and later became a platform for airborne counters against opponents such as Rollins. WWE describes the move as a fast front-face neckbreaker derived from the Ace Crusher, and has repeatedly featured it among its most notable maneuvers. WWE’s maneuver retrospective
