10 Most Filmed Locations Around the World—and Why Rankings Differ

Central Park tops one IMDb-based list of filmed locations, but “most filmed” depends on what is counted. Here are ten reported locations and separate landmark figures.

There is no single definitive ranking of the world’s most filmed places: counts change depending on whether a study tracks film-database location credits, landmark appearances, or actual on-location production. In one NetCredit analysis of IMDb location data for 1900–2020, as reported by Vivid Maps, Central Park leads with 532 credits. A separate 2025 report of Giggster research counts movies featuring landmarks, putting Sydney Opera House above 160. These are useful but different measures—not one combined leaderboard.

What “most filmed” means

A film can be associated with a place in several ways: it may have been filmed there, list the place in a location database, show a landmark, or simply be set there. Those categories are not interchangeable. The sources behind the figures below use different periods and counting units, and do not establish one shared rule proving that every credited location was a physical filming site.

The ten-place list that follows is specifically the NetCredit analysis of IMDb location data for 1900–2020, as reported by Vivid Maps on March 8, 2021. Treat its counts as reported database credits, not a definitive tally of productions physically filmed at each site.

Ten locations in the NetCredit–IMDb list

Rank Location Reported IMDb credits
1 Central Park, Manhattan, New York 532
2 Niagara Falls, Ontario 142
3 Trafalgar Square, London 131
4 Kabul, Afghanistan 113
5 Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland 105
6 Cabo de Gata, Spain 99
7 Eiffel Tower, Paris 95
8 Tobis Portuguesa, Lisbon 76
9 Dakar, Senegal 71
10 Theater in der Josefstadt, Vienna 66

Vivid Maps’ account of the NetCredit analysis attributes these figures to IMDb location data covering 1900–2020. The ranking spans very different kinds of places: a city park, a waterfall, a square, a city, a memorial site, a region, a landmark, a production studio, and a theater. That range is another reason to read the count as a database-location measure rather than a uniform measure of visitor-facing landmarks.

A separate 2025 count focuses on landmarks

A different set of figures comes from Giggster research reported by Euronews in an article published February 28 and updated March 3, 2025. It counts movies featuring landmarks, so it should not be added to or ranked against the 1900–2020 IMDb-credit list.

Landmark Reported movies featuring it
Sydney Opera House Over 160
Eiffel Tower 158
Louvre Museum 110
Arc de Triomphe 73

Euronews’ report of Giggster’s findings also gives broader destination figures—nearly 55,000 films featuring Madrid and over 112,000 movie titles featuring Argentina. Those city- and country-level totals are not comparable to individual landmark counts.

Why other rankings name different places

A 2018 Daily Hive report of GoCompare research used an IMDb analysis over the preceding 20 years, rather than the 1900–2020 window used in the NetCredit-derived list. Its reported figures include Central Park at 231 films, Venice Beach and Greenwich Village at 161 each, Astoria at 132, Williamsburg at 121, UCLA at 106, Coney Island at 102, Times Square at 99, the University of British Columbia at 91, and Harlem at 80.

Central Park’s 231 in that shorter-period report is not a contradiction of its 532 in the broader NetCredit-derived count: the studies cover different time windows, and their counts should not be treated as though they used an identical method. The Daily Hive report is a secondary account of GoCompare’s analysis; its underlying page was not accessible for verification in the material available here. Read Daily Hive’s report.

In short, a “top ten” depends on the source’s unit—credits, films featuring a landmark, or a broader destination association—and its chosen dates. No single list here settles which places have hosted the most physical film production.

Using the list for film-inspired travel

These places can be starting points for set-jetting, but a high count does not mean a particular film was shot on site, that a filming location is open to visitors, or that a tour is available. Check the official website of the venue or destination for current access conditions, visitor rules, and transport information before planning a visit.
