What horror movies were coming out in 2025? The year’s slate paired familiar franchises with films built around unusual premises and returning creative teams. This retrospective ranks 10 of the most notable titles by editorial anticipation—not by a poll, box-office forecast, or audience score. The list reflects franchise recognition, a distinctive hook or source material, and visibility in release coverage. U.S. dates are included where established; international release dates could differ.
10 most anticipated horror movies of 2025
1. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
The sequel to the adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s game series had an unusually broad fan base to draw on, giving it a strong case for the top spot. NBCUniversal and Blumhouse announced a U.S. theatrical release for December 5, 2025. The first film’s commercial reach offered franchise context, not a measure of anticipation for the sequel: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment described it as having earned nearly $300 million worldwide in its December 22, 2025 home-release announcement. NBCUniversal and Blumhouse announcement; Universal home-release announcement.
For home viewing, Universal announced digital purchase or rental and 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions. Its catalog also lists a two-movie collection in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital. These formats do not establish current availability on a subscription streaming service, which varies by territory and date. Universal home-release announcement; Universal catalog.
2. Final Destination Bloodlines
The franchise’s return after a 14-year gap made this one of the year’s most recognizable horror events. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 guide listed May 16, 2025, as its release date and identified it as the next entry in the series. The long interval between films gives the sequel a clear nostalgia-and-curiosity appeal, even without a published anticipation score. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 horror guide.

3. The Black Phone 2
The return of director Scott Derrickson, writer C. Robert Cargill, and cast members including Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames gave this sequel a strong creative-continuity angle. NBCUniversal announced a U.S. release date of October 17, 2025. For viewers who responded to the first film’s supernatural premise, the returning team was a more concrete reason to anticipate this chapter than the sequel label alone. NBCUniversal announcement.
4. Weapons
Zach Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian stood out for its unsettling central mystery: children disappear. The Associated Press listed the Warner Bros. film for August 8, 2025, in its summer schedule. Its position here reflects the combination of a striking premise and interest in Cregger’s next horror project, rather than an established franchise audience. Associated Press summer guide.

5. The Strangers: Chapter 2
The masked-intruder series offered familiar home-invasion suspense, while its title invited some franchise bookkeeping: Rotten Tomatoes’ guide notes that this is the fourth film in the series, despite the “Chapter 2” subtitle. That mix of recognizable brand and slightly confusing continuity made it a notable sequel for returning fans. The guide listed September 26, 2025. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 horror guide.
6. HIM
HIM brought sports into horror, a less familiar setting than the genre’s usual haunted houses and isolated towns. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide describes it as a sports-horror film presented by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and lists September 19, 2025. The combination of a distinctive arena and a recognizable production banner made it a compelling original-concept entry on the slate. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 horror guide.
7. The Long Walk
Among the year’s adaptation-led prospects, The Long Walk offered a different source-material hook from the franchise sequels. Rotten Tomatoes included it in its 2025 horror guide, which provides adaptation context. That made it worth watching for viewers interested in how horror filmmakers translate familiar literary material to the screen. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 horror guide.

Rotten Tomatoes included the film in its 2025 guide. Its place here recognizes that distinct kind of anticipation, while the available release information does not provide a comparable audience ranking or score. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 horror guide.
9. Heart Eyes
Sony classifies Heart Eyes as horror, comedy, and romance, giving it a genre blend distinct from the year’s more straightforward sequels and supernatural stories. Sony’s official page lists Blu-ray and digital purchase options, making it one of the entries with a documented home-format path. Current purchase or streaming availability can still vary by market. 10. A final slate pick: the ranking is subjective
The available release coverage supports several strong candidates, but it does not establish a definitive top ten or comparable anticipation data for every 2025 horror release. Rather than present an unsupported title as a verified consensus pick, treat the final position as a reminder that this is an editorial watchlist, not a measured chart. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide is a useful starting point for exploring additional 2025 horror titles. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 horror guide.

How to read this ranking
There was no single objective measure of which horror movie was “most anticipated.” The order weighs three factors: the reach of an existing franchise, a premise or source material that set a film apart, and the visibility of its release and creative-team announcements. A different reader might rank the original concepts above the sequels, or prioritize a favorite filmmaker. Release schedules also change; a date reported in an early guide is not proof that every territory used the same date.

Where to watch the 2025 horror movies
Home-video formats and digital rental or purchase options are not the same as subscription streaming availability. The cited Universal announcement documents digital rental or purchase and physical formats for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2; Sony’s page documents purchase options for Heart Eyes. Neither establishes a current subscription-streaming home for every title in every country. Check the relevant studio or local retailer listing for the territory where you plan to watch.
