The ten men below are selected for their public or cultural influence, not ranked: the available sources do not establish a defensible “top 10.” Their roles also varied, from squad members to reported head cheerleaders, and the evidence is not equally strong for every name.
How cheerleading became a mixed-gender activity
Cheerleading began as an all-male activity, according to the International Cheer Union’s history. Women first appeared in cheerleading at the University of Minnesota in 1923. The ICU says the activity became majority female after the United States entered World War II; its historical account does not establish the date or basis for a specific percentage, so no precise figure is warranted here.
The men in this list reflect different eras and settings. A school yell leader, a college squad member and a supporter of a military academy team did not necessarily perform the same role as a modern cheerleader.
10 influential men reported to have cheered
1. George W. Bush
Bush became the 43rd president of the United States. Sources disagree about where he cheered: Mental Floss identifies Phillips Academy, while Outsports says Yale. Because those accounts conflict, this entry does not assign him a school or squad.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the accounts establish—and what they do not
Mental Floss and Outsports provide overlapping candidate lists, but both are secondary accounts rather than a single authoritative roster. Outsports links some claims to institutional material, including records or pages associated with Eureka College, West Point, Yale and Princeton. Disputed school details for Bush, Roosevelt and Jackson remain unresolved in the accounts used here, so they are presented as discrepancies rather than settled biography.
Cheerleading itself also changed over time. The ICU provides the historical context for its early male-led form and later change in gender composition. Separately, Varsity Spirit credits Lawrence Herkimer with founding the National Cheerleaders Association and describes his contributions to camps, the Herkie jump, uniforms and pom-poms. That organizational history helps explain the activity’s development, but it does not establish details about any individual in this list.
