There is no single, definitive ranking of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest films: critics’ polls, genre lists and review-site rankings measure different things. This selection instead highlights ten films that reward repeat viewing, spanning British and American periods and moving among psychological mystery, suspense, horror, romance and comedy. Choose by the kind of tension you want, not by the order below.
Cerebral unease: identity, suspicion and atmosphere
Vertigo (1958)
Start here if you want a psychological mystery that grows more unsettling the closer you look. A former detective’s fixation on a woman becomes a film about desire, identity and the power of images. Its visual patterns and carefully controlled revelations give it unusual rewatch depth. The British Film Institute’s 2022 Sight and Sound poll placed it at No. 2; the American Film Institute named it the greatest mystery film in its American-canon list.
Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
For suspense rooted in everyday life, try this story of a young woman whose charming visiting uncle begins to seem less innocent than he appears. The tension comes from a widening gap between the family’s warm welcome and her growing suspicion. Rotten Tomatoes’ Hitchcock guide ranks it first in its list and notes Hitchcock’s own preference for the film; the official filmography summarizes its central relationship.
Rebecca (1940)
This gothic psychological drama suits a mood of brooding uncertainty. A new marriage is overshadowed by the absent first wife, whose presence seems to fill the house and shape its inhabitants. The film was Hitchcock’s first American feature and his only Best Picture winner, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ guide. It is also among the Hitchcock titles in Criterion’s catalog.

Suspense through confinement, shock and escalation
Rear Window (1954)
Watch this one for suspense built almost entirely around looking. A photographer recovering from a broken leg watches his neighbors from his apartment window and begins to suspect a crime. The limited viewpoint makes each clue—and each uncertainty—matter. It ranked No. 38 in the BFI’s 2022 Sight and Sound poll; Rotten Tomatoes’ guide describes the broken-leg premise.
The Birds (1963)
If you prefer dread that accumulates rather than a puzzle to solve, The Birds turns an ordinary natural force into an increasingly unpredictable threat. The BFI’s retrospective discussion emphasizes the film’s semi-abstract exploration of fear, while Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus points to its suspenseful build-up. Its menace comes from the way familiar surroundings become unsafe.

Psycho (1960)
Choose Psycho for horror shaped by a sharp break in audience expectations. Its black humor, narrative reversals and carefully managed shocks make it more than a sequence of frightening moments. The BFI’s 2022 poll placed it at No. 31, and a BFI contributor highlights its manipulation of emotion and tonal contrasts.
Chases, espionage and comic momentum
The 39 Steps (1935)
This is a lively entry point to Hitchcock’s British-era thrillers: an innocent man is pulled into an espionage chase that keeps changing direction. Twists and comic energy keep the pursuit nimble. Rotten Tomatoes calls it an essential early feature and ranks it eighth in its guide; a BFI contributor has singled it out as one of the Hitchcock films revisited especially often.

The Lady Vanishes (1938)
For a mystery with an ensemble and a playful premise, board a train with a passenger who discovers that a fellow traveler has disappeared—and that others deny she was there at all. The confined setting lets suspicion travel from carriage to carriage. Rotten Tomatoes ranks it fifth in its guide, a BFI contributor calls it irresistible, and it appears in Criterion’s Hitchcock catalog.
Notorious (1946)
This espionage story is also a romance under moral pressure. Ingrid Bergman plays a woman recruited to infiltrate a Nazi organization in Brazil, while Cary Grant’s agent is entangled in the consequences of the mission. Rotten Tomatoes ranks the film ninth in its guide and highlights the central performances; Hitchcock’s official filmography summarizes the infiltration premise.

North by Northwest (1959)
Pick this for a polished chase that balances danger with comedy. Cary Grant’s ordinary advertising executive is mistaken for a government agent and pursued across a series of increasingly spectacular settings. David Ehrenstein’s Criterion essay discusses the film’s daylight danger, Grant’s performance and its chase-comedy form. It tied at No. 45 in the BFI’s 2022 poll and ranks fourth on AFI’s list of the art form’s greatest thrills.

What “greatest” means in this list
The films are grouped by viewing mood rather than ranked against one another. The BFI’s 2022 Sight and Sound poll reflects a particular critical poll; AFI’s selections recognize films within defined American-genre and thrills lists; Rotten Tomatoes’ guide has its own ranking, which can change. Those distinctions explain why institutional recognition is useful context, not a universal verdict. The selection also follows Hitchcock across British and American filmmaking and through different modes of suspense, supported by his official filmography.
