Disney has more than one Cinderella film, so the details matter: its animated Cinderella was released in 1950, while Kenneth Branagh’s live-action reimagining arrived in 2015. Here are 10 facts about the character and those two productions, with each film clearly identified.

10 fun facts about Disney’s Cinderella

  1. Ilene Woods voiced the 1950 animated Cinderella

Disney says Woods was selected from nearly 400 hopefuls to voice the title character in the animated film. The Walt Disney Company’s 2003 Disney Legends announcement records the casting detail.

  2. The animated film entered the National Film Registry

Disney reported that the 1950 Cinderella was added to the National Film Registry in 2018. That is a notable place in U.S. film preservation history; Disney’s report does not give a selection rationale. Disney’s registry announcement was published in 2022.

  3. Kenneth Branagh directed the 2015 live-action film

The reimagining starred Lily James as Cinderella, Cate Blanchett as her stepmother, Richard Madden as the prince, and Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother. These are details of the 2015 film, not the animated production. Disney’s 2015 announcement identifies the film and its cast.

  4. Disney gave the 2015 film a kindness campaign

For the live-action film’s home-video debut, Disney invited people to share words of kindness and highlighted a lesson from Cinderella’s mother: “Where there is kindness, there is goodness, and where there is goodness, there is magic.” Disney’s announcement describes the line as words Cinderella took to heart. 5. Jennifer Lee found inspiration in Cinderella’s kindness

Disney writer-director Jennifer Lee wrote that Cinderella was her favorite Disney film as a child. In a 2016 first-person essay, she explained: “Cinderella was a dreamer, herself, which I loved. But what inspired me most about her was her kindness in the face of adversity.” Lee’s essay, “Dream Big,” connects the character’s kindness with resilience.

  6. Jaq and Gus were inspired by spiny mice

Disney’s 2025 World Princess Week material identifies spiny mice as the inspiration for Cinderella’s mouse companions. That describes the inspiration, not a claim that the animated characters are scientifically exact depictions of the species. Disney’s Princess Week announcement supplies the detail.

  7. The 2015 film’s opening weekend brought in $131.6 million worldwide

Disney reported an opening-weekend total of $67.9 million in North America and $63.7 million internationally, or $131.6 million worldwide. These are the studio’s historical opening-weekend figures for the live-action film—not its lifetime gross or an inflation-adjusted total. Disney reported the results on March 16, 2015.

  8. The live-action release opened at No. 1 in North America

Disney said the 2015 film opened at No. 1 in North America during its opening weekend. This is the studio’s report about that weekend, not a claim about every market or the film’s entire theatrical run. The March 2015 announcement gives the opening-weekend context.

  9. The 2015 film’s home-video debut was in September 2015

Disney announced that the live-action Cinderella debuted on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on September 15, 2015. This is a historical release detail; it does not establish whether any particular edition is currently available. Disney’s release announcement documents the formats.

  10. Cinderella remains part of Disney’s Princess brand

Disney’s 2025 World Princess Week announcement described product categories across the broader Disney Princess brand, including dress-up dresses, bracelets, eyewear, dolls, books, and play sets. Those examples show the franchise’s wider product universe; they do not confirm a specific Cinderella item is currently for sale. See Disney’s 2025 announcement.
