These ten films span time-bending puzzles, robot thrillers, creature features, and thoughtful low-budget science fiction. “Free” here means no movie rental or purchase: viewing may be ad-supported or available through a participating library. Streaming catalogs change, so check each title’s current U.S. listing before you press play.

Where to check whether a sci-fi movie is free right now

Use JustWatch’s U.S. movie search and select its Free price filter to look for no-cost options: JustWatch’s U.S. movie listings. A free listing can mean an ad-supported service such as Tubi or Pluto TV, or library streaming through a service such as Kanopy, which may require an eligible library account. Check the service’s own title page as well: a listing can expire or change, and availability outside the U.S. may differ.

The picks below draw on title recommendations and availability information published by Tubi and JustWatch, but those listings are not a guarantee that every film remains free today. Tubi’s September 29, 2026 roundup displayed September 30 end dates for Snowpiercer, Moon, Source Code, and Night of the Comet; those dates had passed by October 8, 2026. The roundup showed I, Robot through October 14, 2026, and marked Coherence and The Thing From Another World available until further notice. Even “until further notice” is not a promise of permanent availability.

10 free sci-fi movies to look for

These are recommendations, not a claim that all ten are currently free on the same service. Ratings and runtimes below are included where Tubi’s roundup supplied them; check the listing for the version available to you.

The Last Starfighter [Blu-ray]
  • Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
  1. I, Robot (2004)

Best for: a brisk robot mystery. A detective investigating a scientist’s death suspects that a robot may have broken the rules governing its kind. The premise turns into a thriller about trust in automated systems. Tubi’s roundup listed it at 1 hour 55 minutes and PG-13, with availability shown through October 14, 2026. Confirm that it is still free before watching.

  2. Coherence (2013)

Best for: a compact, reality-bending puzzle. A dinner party takes a disorienting turn when a comet passes overhead and inconsistencies emerge between nearby houses. Its contained setup makes it a strong pick if you like films that invite you to piece together what is happening. Tubi listed it at 1 hour 28 minutes and TV-MA, available until further notice.

    Interstellar (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital)
    • Genre: Science Fiction
    • Number of Discs: 3
    • Number of Tracks: 0
    • Playback Duration: 169
    • Rating: PG13
  3. The Man From Earth (2007)

Best for: talk-driven science fiction. A departing professor tells colleagues he has lived for roughly 14,000 years. The film stays with the conversation as they test his story against history, religion, biology, and memory; it is a better fit for viewers who want ideas and debate than visual spectacle. Tubi listed it at 1 hour 27 minutes and TV-PG.

  4. Frequency (2000)

Best for: a time-linked thriller with an emotional core. An old ham radio connects a detective with his firefighter father thirty years in the past. Their conversations create a chance to alter events, with consequences that ripple into the present. Tubi listed it at 1 hour 59 minutes and PG-13.

  5. Biosphere (2022)

Best for: intimate, unusual post-apocalyptic science fiction. Two men shelter in a biodome after a catastrophe, and changes in its ecosystem force them to adapt. The setup makes biology and survival inseparable from the film’s questions about friendship. Tubi listed it at 1 hour 47 minutes and TV-MA.

  6. The Thing From Another World (1951)

Best for: classic alien suspense. Arctic researchers and military personnel discover an extraterrestrial visitor beneath the ice. The older film’s isolated setting and human disagreements give the threat room to build. Tubi marked it available until further notice; check the title page for its current status.

    The Frighteners [Blu-ray]
    • Factory sealed DVD
  7. Cube (1997)

Best for: a grim escape-room premise. Strangers wake inside a maze of connected rooms, some rigged with deadly traps, and have to reason their way toward an exit. JustWatch’s guide included free/ad-supported listings as well as a DVD purchase option, but its listing is dated; verify a free U.S. stream before choosing it.

  8. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Best for: deliberately silly sci-fi horror. Clown-like aliens descend on Earth in a movie that treats its bizarre creature-feature premise with camp rather than solemnity. Choose it for playful absurdity, not hard science or serious space adventure. Check current free listings before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  9. The Mist (2007)

Best for: science-fiction horror under pressure. A strange mist and its monsters trap a small-town group in a store, where the danger outside is only part of the problem. This is a bleak choice for viewers comfortable with horror; look up its current U.S. free listing before watching.

  10. Feast (2005)

Best for: a gory, irreverent creature feature. When an alien attacks a desert bar, its patrons have to survive together. JustWatch’s guide describes it as playful as well as gory, so it suits horror fans after rough-edged humor more than viewers seeking a traditional science-fiction drama. Confirm a free option is currently available.

Pick by mood and maturity level

The list is not a family-friendly slate: ratings range from TV-PG to TV-MA, and several picks lean heavily into horror. Use the rating and the film’s description to decide whether it fits your household; confirm the rating on the service’s current listing.

  • For a puzzle: try Coherence or Cube.
  • For a thriller: consider I, Robot or Frequency.
  • For conversation and ideas: look for The Man From Earth.
  • For camp or creature horror: choose Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Feast; The Mist is the darker option.
  • For a classic alien story: check for The Thing From Another World.

Why the free listings may not match from one day to the next

JustWatch’s free sci-fi guide was updated January 5, 2026, and showed title listings checked around September 27–28, 2026. It reported seven of its ten titles on Kanopy and six on Tubi at the time of its check. Those counts describe that guide’s dated catalog snapshot—not a current guarantee for any individual film. A service may remove a title, move it to a paid tier, or offer it only in certain locations. Recheck the specific movie in the U.S. and confirm that the option is marked free rather than rent or buy.
