Engineering memes land when they turn familiar calculations, design compromises, study pressure, and improvised fixes into a joke. These ten examples revisit a list published by Interesting Engineering on January 22, 2019—not a ranking of today’s most popular memes. The humor ranges from broad workplace recognition to discipline-specific references, so some will hit harder than others.
Work and study pressure
1. Procrastination, in one face
In the 2019 Interesting Engineering collection, the “Hide the Pain Harold” image stands in for putting off work. It works because the joke pairs an outwardly calm expression with the knowledge that a task is still waiting. It is a familiar student-and-office gag, not a claim that every engineer procrastinates.
2. Engineering as an endurance test
Another entry jokes about the rigors of engineering. The setup turns demanding study or work into exaggerated survival humor: the laugh comes from recognizing the pressure without treating one person’s schedule as universal.
3. The hourly worker and the tire
The list also includes a joke about an hourly worker inflating a tire. Its punchline plays on the tension between time spent and a simple task’s outcome—a workplace joke that depends on the audience recognizing the setup, not on a technical lesson about tire inflation.

Calculations and engineering knowledge
4. Civil meets chemical engineering
A concrete joke links civil and chemical engineering, using the contrast between disciplines as its premise. It is more rewarding if you know what each field tends to work on; readers outside engineering can still follow the basic idea that neighboring specialties may see the same problem differently.
5. The calculator’s C and CE buttons
One meme points to the calculator’s “C” and “CE” keys. The joke turns a small interface distinction into a moment of uncertainty familiar to anyone who has had to correct an entry mid-calculation. It is a modest, widely understandable gag rather than a deep mathematics reference.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
6. The lubricant argument
A lubricant-related meme makes disagreement itself the joke. Like other engineering humor built around practical details, it assumes readers can imagine a conversation where choosing or discussing a material becomes unexpectedly serious.
Design, plans, and real-world fixes
7. The engineering before-and-after
The before-and-after format contrasts an idealized design with what exists after the work meets reality. Its appeal is the gap between a clean plan and a finished result—an idea also found in university engineering humor about project completion and perception versus reality.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
8. “Trust me, I’m an Engineer”
This familiar catchphrase makes confidence the punchline. It can read as affectionate self-mockery about engineers’ faith in their solutions, or as a joke about how authority is asserted; the tone depends on the image and the audience.
9. Improvised solutions
Another entry celebrates making a workable fix from what is available. The joke is less about an ideal design than the practical ingenuity of getting something to function under real constraints. Professional engineering comics return to similar territory with project plans and site visits.

10. The WD-40 and duct-tape flowchart
The list’s flowchart reduces troubleshooting to two iconic improvised fixes: WD-40 and duct tape. That oversimplification is the joke. It is not engineering advice, and the products appear here only as meme subjects—not as recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why engineering memes can be funny—and why not everyone laughs
These memes draw on three useful ingredients: recognition (how many readers understand the situation), discipline specificity (whether the joke depends on a niche field), and tone (from gentle self-deprecation to sharper workplace satire). That is an editorial way to sort the examples, not a measured audience ranking. Collections from the Institution of Chemical Engineers and BYU Design Review similarly use subjects such as calculators, wind turbines, Mohr’s circle, air resistance, and forgotten notes to connect humor to recognizable engineering situations.

Humor is subjective, even in a technical community. A 2024 study by Miikka Kuutila, Leevi Rantala, Junhao Li, Simo Hosio, and Mika Mäntylä examined 139,718 text-and-image submissions from the software-centered r/ProgrammerHumor community. Its best regression model explained 10% of score variance, and the authors concluded, “Predicting humor with natural language processing methods is challenging.” That finding is about one Reddit community, not engineers generally.
About the original list
Christopher McFadden’s Interesting Engineering article appeared on January 22, 2019. Its ten examples are a time-stamped collection, not evidence of current meme trends or an objective top ten. Other engineering humor collections have continued to use themes such as exams, project work, and the difference between theory and practice; Florida Engineering’s Comics Corner, for example, features workplace and project humor.
