If Rebel Ridge sent you looking for more Don Johnson, start with Miami Vice for his defining TV role, then try Cold in July or Brawl in Cell Block 99 for darker crime stories. This curated watch list moves between police dramas, thrillers, mysteries and films that show a different side of his screen career. It is a set of recommendations, not an objective ranking.
Start with Don Johnson’s police dramas
Miami Vice (1984–1990)
Johnson’s signature role is Detective Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice, the crime series that ABC Press identifies as the work for which he is probably best known. It is the clearest next watch if what you enjoyed in Rebel Ridge was Johnson in a law-enforcement role, though the series offers a very different setting and format. ABC Press’s biography identifies his connection to the series, and Apple TV lists its run as 1984–1990.

Nash Bridges (1996–2001)
For another Johnson-led police show, try Nash Bridges. Johnson stars in this crime drama, which gives you a longer-running television follow-up to Miami Vice. ABC Press identifies it as the series that marked his return to television in 1996; Apple TV lists the run as 1996–2001. ABC Press’s biography and Apple TV’s series listing provide those details.
Choose a crime thriller for a closer match to Rebel Ridge
Cold in July
This crime thriller is a strong choice if you want to stay with tense, grounded crime stories. It is not another story about a corrupt small-town police department, but its genre makes it one of the closer tonal routes from Rebel Ridge. Johnson’s credit is listed by ABC Press, Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide.

Brawl in Cell Block 99
Pick this one for a more severe crime-film experience. Its hard-edged tone makes it a fit for viewers who want a thriller that feels harsher than Rebel Ridge. Johnson’s appearance is listed in the film credits on ABC Press and Rotten Tomatoes.
Dragged Across Concrete
Another crime-oriented film to add to the list, Dragged Across Concrete is worth considering if you want to continue with darker material rather than switch to a lighter genre. Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide list Johnson among its credits.
Rank #2
See Johnson in ensemble mysteries and major film roles
Knives Out
Rian Johnson’s ensemble mystery gives Don Johnson a supporting role in a contemporary whodunit. It is a good change of pace if you want a film rather than a series, and a mystery rather than another police or crime thriller. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film among Johnson’s credits.
Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino’s period Western is a sharp departure from Rebel Ridge and a chance to see Johnson in a high-profile ensemble film. The genre, period setting and scale make it a different kind of recommendation from the crime titles here. Johnson’s credit is listed by Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide.
Try a lighter film or a neo-noir detour
Tin Cup
If you want a break from crime stories, Tin Cup offers a lighter sports-comedy contrast. It broadens the list beyond the law-enforcement and thriller roles most likely to draw viewers from Rebel Ridge. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film among Johnson’s credits.
The Hot Spot
The Hot Spot is the list’s neo-noir option, extending the range beyond Johnson’s later crime and ensemble-film credits. It is a provisional pick: the available credit evidence for this title is less complete than for the other recommendations, so check the film’s own credits if you need a title-specific confirmation before watching.

Return to Rebel Ridge with a new focus
Rebel Ridge (2024)
A rewatch can make Johnson’s role as Chief Sandy Burnne and the film’s restrained thriller approach easier to focus on after exploring his other work. Netflix identifies Rebel Ridge as a 2024 thriller starring Johnson; its synopsis follows a former Marine confronting local corruption after his money is seized. See the official Netflix title page.
