Marilyn Manson has been at the center of controversies over his shock-rock persona, public accusations of abuse, civil lawsuits and a criminal investigation that ended without charges. This is a retrospective of ten documented milestones, ranked by public impact, news coverage and lasting consequences—not a claim that these are the ten definitive incidents in his career. Allegations, denials, settlements and court decisions are distinguished below because they do not all establish the same thing.
Ten documented milestones
| # | Date | Moment and type | What the record establishes—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1999 | Backlash linking Manson to Columbine Public criticism |
In a 1999 Congressional Record essay, U.S. Representative Thomas L. Jipping argued, “While Marilyn Manson alone is not the problem, his brand of music promotes violence more aggressively than ever.” The essay documents a contemporary political argument about music and youth violence; it is not evidence that Manson or his music caused the shooting. |
| 2 | 1990s | Claims that the shock-rock persona promoted Satanism, misogyny or violence Cultural criticism |
The Independent describes critics making these accusations during the 1990s. They were part of the public controversy around Manson’s image and music, not established findings about their effects. |
| 3 | 1998 | Provocative stories in The Long Hard Road Out of Hell Published memoir |
The Los Angeles Times reported that Manson’s memoir, co-written with Neil Strauss, recounted claims of shocking and violent conduct. Those stories should be understood as accounts presented in the memoir, not as independently verified events. |
| 4 | 2021 | Evan Rachel Wood’s public accusations Public allegations |
Wood publicly accused Manson of grooming and abuse. The Associated Press reported that their relationship became public when Wood was 19 and Manson was 38, and that they were briefly engaged in 2010. Manson called her claims “horrible distortions of reality.” These are competing statements, not a court finding. |
| 5 | 2021; case later settled | Esmé Bianco’s lawsuit Civil suit |
Bianco’s federal suit alleged sexual assault, battery and human trafficking connected with events beginning in 2009; Manson denied the allegations. The Los Angeles Times reported that the court allowed the case to proceed at that time, and the Associated Press later reported a settlement. A settlement is not a factual finding on the claims. |
| 6 | 2021–23 | Other women’s civil claims Civil litigation |
The Associated Press reported that multiple women sued after Wood came forward. The Independent’s timeline says a Jane Doe suit settled shortly before a scheduled trial in September 2023. The suits did not all have the same outcome or evidentiary record; a settlement does not itself establish the truth of an allegation. |
| 7 | Investigation concerned reported incidents from 2009 to 2011; no-charge decision reported in 2021 | Los Angeles County criminal investigation Criminal investigation |
The sheriff’s department investigated reported incidents, referred the case to prosecutors, and was asked to gather additional evidence. Prosecutors ultimately filed no charges, according to the Associated Press. That charging decision is not a judicial finding that all allegations were false. Bianco criticized the outcome; Manson’s attorney, Howard King, described it as vindication. King—not the prosecutor—said the district attorney had concluded “Brian Warner is innocent.” |
| 8 | 2022 | Manson sued Wood and Illma Gore Defamation suit |
Manson alleged that Wood and Gore conspired to fabricate accusations. Those were allegations in his complaint, not established facts. The Associated Press reported that a judge dismissed significant portions of the suit, including claims concerning a disputed FBI letter and an alleged checklist. |
| 9 | 2023; fees reported in 2024 | Manson dropped the defamation suit Case outcome |
After the dismissals, Manson dropped the case and agreed to pay Wood’s legal fees. The Independent reported the amount as $327,000 in 2024. That resolution ended Manson’s suit; it was not itself a trial verdict on every underlying abuse allegation. |
| 10 | Incident in 2019; plea in 2023 | New Hampshire videographer case Criminal plea |
Manson pleaded no contest to blowing his nose on a videographer; a separate spitting charge was dismissed under the plea agreement. The Associated Press reported a fine of a little over $1,400 and 20 hours of community service. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt. |
What this ranking leaves out
Concert cancellations, protests and censorship disputes are often included in broad discussions of Manson’s controversies, but the episodes identified here do not establish a specific, sufficiently documented event to add as a standalone entry. They are therefore not used to fill a slot. The ten milestones above instead trace documented public criticism and the later legal disputes without treating every headline as a separate, proven incident.
Why the legal distinctions matter
A public accusation is not a charge; a civil suit is not a criminal prosecution; and a prosecutor’s decision not to file charges is not a judicial ruling on whether an allegation is true. Likewise, a settlement resolves a case without necessarily deciding its factual claims, while a no-contest plea has a different meaning from an admission of guilt. Keeping those distinctions intact is essential to understanding both the controversy and its documented outcomes.
