These 10 performers have British backgrounds, even though their fame and screen roles are often associated with Hollywood or the United States. Here, “British” is used as a broad geographic descriptor: each person on this list was born in the UK, or— in Vivien Leigh’s case—was born to British parents in British India. That does not make birthplace, citizenship, upbringing and personal identity interchangeable.
What “actually British” means here
An accent, a character’s nationality or a career built in America cannot establish a performer’s citizenship. This list uses documented birthplace or British parentage as its consistent selection rule, and gives the specific place when the source identifies it. It is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking or a claim that birthplace determines identity.
Countryfile’s 2025 article supplies several of the Hollywood-born-in-the-UK examples below; Wales.com profiles Welsh performers, and Damian Lewis’s official biography describes him as British. The sources establish different kinds of biographical facts, so the entries distinguish them rather than treating them as equivalent.
10 celebrities with British backgrounds
1. Boris Karloff — Peckham, London
Countryfile says the actor was born in Peckham, London, and later emigrated to Canada before moving to California. His Hollywood career followed a childhood in London, not an American birthplace. Countryfile

5. Ray Milland — Neath, Wales
Countryfile identifies the Welsh actor as from Neath. Naming Wales, rather than using “England” as a catch-all for Britain, gives a more precise account of his background. Countryfile

6. Christian Bale — born in Wales, raised in England
Bale was born in Glamorgan, Wales, raised in England and is described by Countryfile as identifying with England. These details show why birthplace, upbringing and personal identity should not be collapsed into one label. British Heritage’s 2024 article also says he became a US citizen in 2014; that citizenship claim is not needed to establish his birthplace and is not treated here as a defining measure of his identity. Countryfile; British Heritage
7. Daniel Kaluuya — London
Countryfile identifies Kaluuya as London-born. His internationally known acting career may make his British birthplace less obvious to some viewers, but his birthplace—not his roles—is the relevant fact here. Countryfile

10. Damian Lewis — St John’s Wood, London
Lewis’s official biography describes him as a British actor and says he was born in St John’s Wood, London. In this case, the source explicitly uses “British” as well as giving his birthplace. Damian Lewis official biography
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Birthplace is not the same as nationality or identity
These biographies answer a specific question about origins; they do not provide a complete citizenship record for every person. A person can be born in one country, raised in another, hold citizenship elsewhere and identify with a particular nation or region. Bale’s Welsh birth and English upbringing illustrate that those facts can coexist.
“British” also covers people and places across the United Kingdom, including England and Wales. When a source names a particular place, using it is more informative than replacing it with a broad label. For Leigh, the wording must be different again: the cited source places her birth in British India, not in the UK.
