If you love Agatha Christie’s carefully planted clues, memorable suspects and observant detectives, start with Agatha Christie’s Poirot or Miss Marple: both adapt Christie’s own work. The other eight picks are separate detective stories, chosen for pleasures they share with her mysteries, from village settings and amateur sleuths to period whodunits and methodical investigations.

Direct Agatha Christie adaptations

These are the closest choices if you want Christie’s characters and stories on screen.

1. Agatha Christie’s Poirot

David Suchet plays Hercule Poirot, the precise Belgian detective whose cases turn on close observation and an understanding of both victims and perpetrators. ITV’s adaptation ran from 1989 to 2013. For viewers who enjoy Christie’s intricate plotting and a detective who reasons through human motives, this is the natural first choice. Agatha Christie Limited says Christie’s family recommended Suchet for the role after seeing him in Blott on the Landscape. Agatha Christie Limited’s Poirot page provides background on the adaptation.

2. Miss Marple

Joan Hickson’s BBC portrayal of Miss Marple ran from 1984 to 1992. Unlike Poirot, Marple is an amateur rather than a professional detective: her knowledge of human nature helps her see what others miss in apparently quiet communities. Choose this for a more village-centered Christie mystery and a sleuth whose insight comes from observing people, not from official authority.

Christie-adjacent village mysteries and amateur sleuths

The following shows are not Christie adaptations. They offer some of the same appeal through small communities, unusual investigators and self-contained crime puzzles.

3. Father Brown

Set in the fictional Cotswolds village of Kembleford, this BBC series follows a Catholic priest who solves crimes. It began in 2013 and is based on G. K. Chesterton’s stories, not Christie’s. Its village setting and thoughtful outsider sleuth make it a good fit if you like mysteries where the people and relationships around a crime matter as much as the clues.

4. Grantchester

In 1950s Cambridgeshire, a vicar and police detective Geordie Keating investigate crimes while their relationships and local community develop around them. Grantchester suits viewers who want recurring characters and village atmosphere alongside the mystery; it gives more room to character drama than a tightly focused drawing-room puzzle.

5. The Mrs Bradley Mysteries

Diana Rigg stars as an elegant, perceptive amateur sleuth in this BBC series set in the 1920s. Mrs Bradley investigates with help from her chauffeur, and her direct-to-viewer wit gives the show a playful edge. Try it if you want a period mystery led by an unconventional investigator rather than a police officer.

Period detectives and professional investigations

These picks put trained investigators at the center. Their cases may appeal to Christie fans who enjoy working through a crime, but their police work and historical settings make them different from a classic village whodunit.

6. The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries

This BBC series, shown in the early 1990s, follows professional detective Roderick Alleyn in postwar England. Its traditional detective lead and suspect-rich cases make it a strong choice if you like the structure of a Golden Age-style whodunit, even when the sleuth is a police professional rather than an amateur.

7. Endeavour

Set in Oxford, Endeavour follows the younger Endeavour Morse as he works with DI Fred Thursday. The series ran from 2012 to 2023. PBS MASTERPIECE emphasizes both the period detail and the relationship between the cerebral Morse and Thursday. It is more police procedural than cozy village mystery, but its thoughtful lead and carefully developed investigations can appeal to viewers who enjoy a detective’s reasoning. In the PBS preview transcript, the narrator describes Morse as pursuing justice “from the shadows of Oxford and the fringes of the police force.”

8. Foyle’s War

Christopher Foyle investigates crimes during and after the Second World War. The historical circumstances are not just background: wartime pressures shape the cases and the people caught up in them. Choose Foyle’s War if you want a methodical detective story in which the period setting is central to the drama.

9. Inspector George Gently

Set in northeast England in the 1960s, this BBC series follows veteran inspector George Gently and his younger sergeant as they investigate crimes amid social change. It is a more conventional police mystery than a Christie-style amateur investigation, but it offers the appeal of a capable detective and a community in transition.

A literary detective beyond Britain

10. Maigret

Maigret is the geographical exception on this list: the ITV adaptations are set in postwar France, not Britain. Versions have starred Michael Gambon and Rowan Atkinson. It earns a place as a Christie-adjacent recommendation for viewers drawn to psychological investigation and literary detectives brought to British television, rather than for a British setting or a Christie connection.

Which show should you try first?

If you want… Start with… What to expect
Christie’s own cases and detectives Agatha Christie’s Poirot or Miss Marple Direct adaptations, with a professional detective in one and an amateur sleuth in the other.
A village mystery and an unusual investigator Father Brown or Grantchester Cotswolds or Cambridgeshire communities, with a priest or vicar alongside the investigations.
A period amateur sleuth The Mrs Bradley Mysteries A 1920s setting, an unconventional investigator and a playful tone.
A professional detective in a historical setting Foyle’s War or Inspector George Gently Police investigations shaped by wartime or 1960s social context.
A cerebral detective and police partnership Endeavour Oxford period detail and the working relationship between Morse and Thursday.
A France-set literary detective Maigret Postwar French cases adapted for British television.

What counts as a Christie connection?

Only Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Miss Marple adapt Christie’s work in this selection. The rest are recommendations based on overlapping interests: amateur or unusually observant sleuths, intricate suspects and motives, period texture, village settings or episodic murder puzzles. They are not presented as Christie stories, and the list is a curated set of options rather than an objective ranking.
