The strongest choices for the best wrestlers in Stampede Wrestling include Bret Hart, Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith and Owen Hart—but Stampede’s story also belongs to regional stars and to the people who built the territory. This list covers the Calgary-based wrestling promotion, not the Calgary Stampede rodeo. It is an editorial ranking, not an official all-time ballot: available sources do not provide comparable statistics across the promotion’s eras.

The ranking weighs importance to Stampede, documented matches and featured-match presence, contribution to the territory’s identity, and influence beyond Calgary. Because those records are uneven, Stu Hart’s placement reflects his role as founder, trainer and occasional performer; the list does not treat later WWE success as a Stampede achievement.

Who were the best wrestlers in Stampede Wrestling?

Stu Hart founded and promoted Stampede Wrestling, a regional promotion that WWE describes as running shows throughout western Canada for nearly 40 years. Calgary was its center, and its reach extended well beyond one family: internationally recognized performers emerged from the territory alongside local stars such as The Stomper and Gama Singh. The names below are ranked by the criteria above, with promotion-building and regional identity considered alongside in-ring work.

1. Bret Hart

Bret Hart’s strongest claim begins in Calgary: WWE says he emerged from Stampede Wrestling before later joining the company with Jim Neidhart. Stampede match listings include bouts against Dynamite Kid, Archie Gouldie, Leo Burke, Badnews Allen and Davey Boy Smith, showing how closely his early work was tied to the territory’s roster. His later WWE accolades and technical reputation add to his wider influence, but they should not be mistaken for Stampede accomplishments. WWE’s Bret Hart profile and the Stampede match compilation listings support his place at the top.

2. Dynamite Kid

Dynamite Kid helped make Stampede a proving ground for fast, technically ambitious wrestling. WWE describes him and Davey Boy Smith as Calgary rivals and tag partners; its Smith profile contrasts Smith’s power with Dynamite Kid’s speed and precision. Stampede catalog listings include matches with Bret Hart, Bruce Hart, Smith, Great Gama, The Cobra and Owen Hart. That combination of territory-specific work and influence beyond Calgary gives him one of the strongest cases on this list. WWE’s British Bulldog profile and the match listings document the pairing and opponents.

3. Davey Boy Smith

The Hart family brought Smith and Dynamite Kid to Calgary, where they developed as both competitors and partners before their wider international careers. Stampede listings also include Smith against Bruce Hart and The Cobra. His later fame as the British Bulldog is part of his broader legacy, but his ranking here rests on his Calgary development and role in one of Stampede’s defining rivalries and teams—not on treating later success as a local title record. WWE’s profile describes the relationship between the two wrestlers.

4. Owen Hart

Owen Hart’s place in Stampede is grounded in more than family lineage. Match listings record him against Jerry Morrow, Muhkan Singh, Larry Cameron, Johnny Smith, Jason the Terrible and Dynamite Kid, while WWE identifies him as one of Stu Hart’s sons who later achieved international stardom. His Calgary matches and connection to the promotion’s next generation make him a significant Stampede wrestler in his own right. The match catalog and WWE profile offer distinct evidence for his local and later careers.

5. Stu Hart

Including Stu Hart requires a broader definition of “wrestler.” WWE identifies him as Stampede’s founder and promoter, notes that he wrestled sporadically after the 1970s, and describes him as a trainer. His importance to the territory’s talent pipeline and identity outweighs the limited basis here for comparing his featured in-ring work with the other entries. Bret Hart recalled that his father trained wrestlers because he needed new talent to fill Stampede cards; that is a son’s first-person account of how the operation worked, not an independent statistical record. Bret Hart’s 2015 WWE interview discusses his father’s training and the promotion.

6. Archie Gouldie, “The Stomper”

Archie Gouldie, known as The Stomper, represents Stampede’s regional roots beyond the Hart family and British imports. WWE names him among the promotion’s local stars. Bret Hart recalled that Gouldie began wrestling with his father, while match listings pair Gouldie with Bret Hart, Dan Kroffat and Badnews Allen, among others. Those references establish a durable local presence, even though they do not provide a complete record of his career or championship history. See Bret Hart’s interview and the catalog listings.

7. Gama Singh

WWE also names Gama Singh as one of Stampede’s local stars. The match catalog lists him against Dynamite Kid and Great Gama, but those names refer to separate wrestlers in the listings; they should not be conflated. The available documentation supports Singh’s place in the Calgary territory, though it offers less comparative detail about his match record than it does for the leading names. WWE’s Stampede history feature names him among the local stars, and the catalog records pairings.

8. Jim Neidhart

Jim Neidhart matters both for his Stampede work and as part of the route from Calgary to a national audience. Bret Hart described him as the last student Stu Hart fully trained on his own. WWE says Bret and Neidhart came to the company from Stampede and became the Hart Foundation. Stampede listings also record Neidhart against Neil Guay and Mike Sharpe. The team’s later fame is substantial, but the case for including Neidhart here is his Calgary connection and role in that territory-to-national pathway. See WWE’s Bret Hart profile, Bret Hart’s interview and the match listings.

9. Bruce Hart

Bruce Hart was a Stampede performer as well as a participant in the family business. Cataloged matches include bouts against Dynamite Kid and teams with Bret and Keith Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Brian Pillman and others. That documented presence and his place in the promotion’s operation support his inclusion. The available sources provide less independent assessment of his match quality, so this ranking reflects his promotion-specific involvement rather than a claim that he outranked every omitted performer in the ring. The match compilation listings show examples.

10. Leo Burke

Leo Burke earns the final place as a regional-era choice. The Stampede Hall of Fame roster includes him, and match listings record a bout with Bret Hart. Those references establish a connection to the promotion, but do not by themselves prove a particular ranking or title record. He is included as a reminder that Stampede’s legacy was wider than its most internationally famous names; the evidence presented here is thinner than it is for the higher-ranked wrestlers. What does “Stampede Four” mean?

The label “Stampede Four” is used on Diana Hart’s family-history page for Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart, Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith. It is a family-source label, not an official promotion award or an objective top-four ranking. This list includes all four, but also gives weight to Owen Hart, Stu Hart and regional names whose importance does not depend on that label. The Diana Hart family-history page is the source for the term.

How to read the available match and Hall of Fame records

Cataloged match pairings help identify opponents and eras, but they are not a complete statistical history of Stampede Wrestling. They cannot establish total wins, attendance, comprehensive championship reigns or a definitive all-time order. Likewise, a Hall of Fame roster is useful for identifying recognized figures, not a ranked ballot or a complete list of everyone who mattered. The rankings above therefore distinguish documented local evidence from later fame and make their editorial weighting explicit. The match listings and WWE’s Stampede history feature are useful starting points for further viewing and reading, not complete career databases.
