The best stoner movies make cannabis more than a passing prop: it shapes the characters, the plot, or the film’s comic and cultural point of view. This ranking weighs that connection alongside filmmaking craft, distinctiveness, influence, and staying power. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive scorecard.

How this ranking defines a stoner movie

Rotten Tomatoes defines the category around films whose characters and plot focus on weed and people who smoke it “in not-so-moderate amounts.” That is a useful dividing line: a movie does not become a stoner movie simply because cannabis appears in one scene. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2021 list ordered its choices by Tomatometer, the share of critics who gave a positive review. That measures critic positivity, not cultural influence, comic craft, or how often a film rewards a rewatch.

Here, the ranking considers how central cannabis is to the story, the film’s craft and originality, and its staying power. Those qualities are weighed editorially rather than converted into a numeric score. The result spans counterculture road movies, coming-of-age stories, buddy comedies, crime capers, and surreal comedy.

The 10 best stoner movies

  1. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age comedy follows high-school students through the last day of school and one night in 1976. Cannabis is part of the social world, but the film’s real strength is its loose, observant portrait of teenagers navigating status, freedom, and the last hours before summer. That broader focus keeps it from feeling like a one-joke weed comedy.

    #1 Best Overall

Focus Features lists the film as R-rated, with a 103-minute runtime, and credits Linklater as writer and director. Its cast includes Jason London, Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey, and Milla Jovovich. The studio’s official tagline captures the film’s hazy nostalgia: “1976 was a time they’d never forget…if only they could remember…” See Focus Features’ official film page.

Rotten Tomatoes ranked it first on its 2021 list and displayed a 92% Tomatometer then; that figure can change and reflects positive critic reviews, not a permanent measure of quality. For home viewing, Criterion offers a director-approved 4K restoration on 4K UHD, paired with Blu-ray and special features. Details on the Criterion edition of Dazed and Confused.

  2. The Big Lebowski (1998)

Joel and Ethan Coen turn a case of mistaken identity into a rambling plunge through Los Angeles’ underworld, with Jeff Bridges’ laid-back “Dude” at its center. Cannabis is part of his unhurried character, but the film’s strange, carefully built comic universe is what gives it its enduring cult appeal. It is the pick for viewers who want a crime story that keeps drifting off its own track.

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2021 ranking displayed an 83% Tomatometer for the film. The score is a dated critic-positivity snapshot, not a judgment of its cultural footprint.

    Rank #2
    Saw: 8-Film Collection - DVD
    • Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).
    • Genre: Horror
  3. This Is the End (2013)

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s apocalyptic comedy turns a Hollywood party into a survival farce, with performers playing heightened versions of themselves. It is more self-aware and chaotic than a traditional stoner comedy: weed is woven into the characters’ behavior, while the end-of-the-world setup drives the escalating absurdity. Choose it for ensemble mayhem rather than a grounded story.

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2021 list showed an 83% Tomatometer. That figure represents the proportion of critics with positive reviews at the time.

  4. Easy Rider (1969)

This counterculture road film follows two bikers traveling through the South and Southwest after a drug deal. Its place here reflects the genre’s roots in American rebellion and movement, not just its later comedy conventions. The journey gives the film a more searching, unsettled tone than the buddy comedies that followed.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 83% Tomatometer in its 2021 list. A critic aggregate cannot capture the film’s historical role or determine how every viewer will respond to its style.

  5. Friday (1995)

Craig Jones and his friend spend a day dealing with neighborhood tensions, a job loss, and a debt to a drug dealer. The compact, day-in-the-life setup gives Friday room for character and community as well as jokes. It is a strong choice for viewers who prefer an everyday hangout comedy to a road trip or elaborate caper.

The 2021 Rotten Tomatoes list displayed a 78% Tomatometer for Friday. That number is a dated share of positive critic reviews.

  6. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

This high-school comedy follows teenagers dealing with school, work, relationships, and growing up. Cannabis is one strand of a much wider youth portrait, so it sits at the edge of the stoner-movie category rather than representing its purest form. It earns a place for showing how the genre overlaps with coming-of-age comedy.

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2021 ranking showed a 77% Tomatometer. The figure describes critic response, not the film’s cultural influence or an objective quality score.

  7. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

Two friends set out on a late-night mission for burgers, and every obstacle makes the trip stranger. Cannabis helps launch the premise, but the movie’s buddy-comedy engine is the contrast between Harold and Kumar and the detours they encounter. It is the most direct pick here for a ridiculous, one-night quest.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 74% Tomatometer in 2021. The rating is a historical critic aggregate, not an audience score.

  8. Inherent Vice (2014)

Paul Thomas Anderson adapts Thomas Pynchon’s novel into a hazy detective story set in 1970s Los Angeles. Its private-eye plot keeps slipping sideways, making confusion part of the viewing experience. This is the list’s most deliberately disorienting choice: a better fit for viewers who enjoy atmosphere and oddball mystery than a tightly plotted comedy.

The Rotten Tomatoes list showed a 73% Tomatometer in 2021. That percentage records critic positivity at the time, not a verdict on the film’s ambition.

  9. Ted (2012)

Seth MacFarlane’s comedy pairs a grown man with his foul-mouthed childhood teddy bear. Cannabis is part of the characters’ adult routine, while the central joke depends on the clash between an ordinary life and an outrageous companion. Its broad, deliberately crude humor makes it a different kind of stoner comedy from the laid-back hangout films above.

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2021 list displayed a 69% Tomatometer for Ted, meaning that share of critics gave it a positive review at that point.

  10. Pineapple Express (2008)

A distinctive cannabis strain links a process server and his dealer to a crime scene, sending the pair on the run. The film blends stoner comedy with action and buddy-movie pacing, making it the most overt genre mash-up on this list. It is a natural pick if you want jokes, chase scenes, and an increasingly ridiculous criminal tangle.

Rotten Tomatoes showed a 68% Tomatometer in its 2021 ranking. The number is a dated critic score, not an objective measure of quality or audience approval.

The ten picks are not the whole canon. Rotten Tomatoes’ essential guide also points to Up in Smoke as an early Cheech & Chong counterculture film, alongside the mainstream comedies Friday and Pineapple Express and cult favorites Grandma’s Boy and Super Troopers.
