It is a useful, source-led ranking of WWE matches—not a definitive ranking of Mysterio’s entire career. The selections span title wins, rivalries, tributes and spectacular losses, while leaving out important work from other promotions.
What this ranking covers—and what it leaves out
WWE published its retrospective on July 11, 2012, and all ten selections are WWE matches. The order below follows WWE’s ranking rather than presenting a new, supposedly objective verdict. The list also reflects the range of Mysterio’s WWE work: a match can qualify through its stakes, story or significance, not only because he won.
That scope matters for a career-spanning title. WWE separately revisits Mysterio’s WCW Cruiserweight Championship match with Dean Malenko at Great American Bash 1996, identified as Mysterio’s WCW debut. A list limited to WWE bouts cannot stand in for the full career. WWE’s 2012 ranking and its Great American Bash 1996 retrospective provide the basis for the distinction.
WWE’s 10 best Rey Mysterio matches, in order
1. Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho — The Bash, June 28, 2009
Stakes: Intercontinental Championship versus Mysterio’s mask. Jericho tried to unmask Mysterio, who revealed a second mask underneath. The moment distracted Jericho long enough for Mysterio to hit the 619 and win the championship. The bout tops WWE’s ranking because its central stipulation and finish make the mask-versus-title conflict part of the action, not just the setup.

2. Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero — WrestleMania 21, April 3, 2005
Stakes: A personal contest between friends, and their first WrestleMania singles match. WWE frames the story around Guerrero’s desire to prove he could beat Mysterio. Mysterio reversed a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker into a pinfall. Their history reached back to WCW, where Mysterio had also beaten Guerrero at Halloween Havoc 1997.
3. World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat — WrestleMania 22, April 2, 2006
Stakes: Mysterio challenged champion Kurt Angle and Randy Orton in a three-way match. He won the World Heavyweight Championship by catching Orton with a springboard hurricanrana. This is the title victory that followed Mysterio’s Royal Rumble win earlier that year.

4. Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels — Raw, November 14, 2005
Context: The match aired the night after Eddie Guerrero’s death. WWE describes a respectful opening handshake and a contest that carried the weight of the tribute without turning it into a conventional grudge match. Mysterio won with a springboard splash after his third attempt at the 619.
5. Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero — No Mercy, October 8, 2006
Stakes: A Falls Count Anywhere match that concluded Mysterio’s feud with Chavo Guerrero. WWE recounts Mysterio launching from a riser onto Chavo in the bleachers to finish the match, taking the fight well beyond the ring.

6. World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber — No Way Out, February 15, 2009
Stakes: The World Heavyweight Championship inside the Elimination Chamber. Mysterio entered first, eliminated Chris Jericho and Kane, and lasted almost 30 minutes before Edge ended his run with a Spear. He did not win, but the entry position and survival made his performance a central part of the match.
7. Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison — SmackDown, September 4, 2009
Stakes: Mysterio defended the Intercontinental Championship. He missed a top-rope hurricanrana, and Morrison countered with Starship Pain to win the title. Its place in the ranking is a reminder that WWE’s picks include compelling defeats as well as Mysterio victories.

8. Rey Mysterio vs. Sabu — ECW One Night Stand, June 11, 2006
Stakes: The World Heavyweight Championship under Extreme Rules. The referee and doctor stopped the match after Mysterio and Sabu crashed through a table bridged between the ring and the guardrail; both were stretchered out. The finish was an intervention for safety, not a conventional pinfall or submission.
9. 2006 Royal Rumble — January 29, 2006
Stakes: The 30-man Royal Rumble. WWE says Mysterio entered at No. 2, won the match and lasted more than an hour. Its 2012 retrospective called that the record for longest time in a Royal Rumble match; that is the claim as WWE reported it then, not a current record check. WWE’s profile also identifies him as the No. 2 entrant and winner of the 2006 Rumble.

10. Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk — Over the Limit, May 23, 2010
Stakes: A “Straight Edge Society Pledge versus Hair Match.” Mysterio won after outside interference was removed, then cut Punk’s hair as stipulated. The bout’s defining image came after the bell, when the result became visible.

The ten matches mix championship changes, feud conclusions, a memorial tribute, rule-based spectacles and a Royal Rumble. Mysterio loses to Morrison and Edge in two selections, while the Sabu match ends in a stoppage. That variety helps explain the ranking: WWE’s retrospective values the drama and shape of the performance, not simply the result.
The list is also a snapshot from 2012. Other rankings can make different choices, and WWE’s ordering should be read as its own retrospective rather than a universal consensus. For viewers interested in Mysterio before his WWE run, the Malenko match is a useful companion. In WWE’s account, Malenko described the appeal as a clash between Mysterio’s aerial lucha libre style and Malenko’s mat-technique approach; that is Malenko’s recollection, not an independent critical judgment.
How to use the list as a watch guide
- For the most consequential WWE arc: Pair the 2006 Royal Rumble with the WrestleMania 22 championship win. Together they capture the milestone that took Mysterio from Rumble winner to World Heavyweight Champion.
- For personal rivalries: Start with Guerrero at WrestleMania 21, then compare the very different feud-ending Falls Count Anywhere bout with Chavo at No Mercy.
- For stipulation-driven drama: The Jericho mask-versus-title match, the Sabu Extreme Rules bout and the CM Punk hair match each build their finish around a different special condition.
- For a broader career view: Add the 1996 Malenko match rather than treating the WWE-only ten as a complete career ranking.
