These are ten of the original Star Wars trilogy’s most memorable lines, ranked by a mix of scene impact, character voice, cultural recognition, and thematic payoff. This is an editorial ranking—not a measured audience poll. Spoilers for A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi follow.
10. “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope
Obi-Wan delivers this warning to Darth Vader while apparently facing defeat. It reframes the confrontation: the Force and Obi-Wan’s influence may outlast his physical presence. The line’s power comes from that shift in scale, turning a duel into a glimpse of what the story’s spiritual conflict means. StarWars.com includes the exchange among its memorable A New Hope quotes.
9. “Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking…nerf-herder!” — Leia Organa, The Empire Strikes Back
Leia’s insult is memorable because it sounds unmistakably like her: sharp, inventive, and unwilling to let Han’s swagger go unanswered. Their bickering gives the line its extra charge. It is not just a funny put-down; it belongs to a relationship being negotiated in the middle of danger. StarWars.com’s Empire quote collection places it among the film’s Han-and-Leia exchanges.
8. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” — Darth Vader, A New Hope
Vader’s dry threat compresses the character’s menace into a single sentence. He is not arguing about belief in the abstract: he is demonstrating that he can make disagreement dangerous. The line also introduces the Force as something Vader treats as real power, not superstition. StarWars.com attributes the line to Vader in its A New Hope roundup.
#1 Best Overall
- The Skywalker saga’s center trilogy introduces Luke Skywalker, who is drawn into the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire when he is recruited by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Strong in the Force, Luke is confronted with a shocking truth — while Sith Lord Darth Vader faces a supreme decision.
7. “It’s a trap!” — Admiral Ackbar, Return of the Jedi
Ackbar’s blunt warning names the danger facing the Rebel fleet as the battle turns against it. Its clipped wording makes it instantly legible: there is no time for a speech, only a recognition that the enemy has sprung an ambush. StarWars.com describes the line as iconic in its Return of the Jedi quote feature.
6. “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” — Leia Organa, A New Hope
Leia’s recorded plea gives the adventure its mission. Before Luke understands the Rebellion or his connection to the Force, he encounters a person in danger asking for help. The message links Leia’s immediate need to Obi-Wan’s past and sets Luke moving beyond the farm. StarWars.com’s A New Hope collection identifies the plea and its speaker.
Rank #2
5. “Use the Force, Luke.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope
Obi-Wan’s instruction becomes the turning point in Luke’s attack on the Death Star. Luke has to stop relying only on the targeting system and trust the guidance he has been learning to sense. The line works because it turns an idea introduced through training into a decision with immediate consequences. StarWars.com includes the line in its A New Hope selection.
4. “Never tell me the odds!” — Han Solo, The Empire Strikes Back
Han’s answer to C-3PO’s grim calculation is a perfect expression of his stubborn confidence. He does not dispute the numbers; he rejects the idea that they get the final word. That combination of nerve and practical improvisation is central to Han’s voice throughout the trilogy. The line appears in StarWars.com’s Empire quote collection.
Rank #3
3. “I am a Jedi, like my father before me.” — Luke Skywalker, Return of the Jedi
Luke’s declaration answers the Emperor’s attempt to draw him into anger and violence. He refuses to kill Vader, but he also refuses to let the Emperor define what his father’s legacy must mean. The line resolves the trilogy’s central family conflict through Luke’s moral choice, not a victory achieved by force alone. StarWars.com gives the statement its climactic context, while Lucasfilm describes the film’s final confrontation and Vader’s redemption on its official Return of the Jedi page.
2. “I know.” — Han Solo, The Empire Strikes Back
When Leia tells Han she loves him as he is about to be frozen in carbonite, his reply is not a conventional declaration. It is unmistakably Han: cool on the surface, but intimate because he understands what she means. The moment’s effect depends on the relationship and the danger around them as much as on the two words.

Lucasfilm’s production account says Harrison Ford and director Irvin Kershner refined the response during production. Kershner called the exchange “truly one of the few drama scenes in the picture.” The scene was filmed June 21, 1979, at Stage 5 at Elstree Studios, according to Lucasfilm’s account of the moment.

This is the trilogy’s defining reversal: Luke’s enemy becomes his father, transforming the conflict from a struggle between opposing sides into a personal and moral crisis. The short form is the version most often repeated, but it is not the entirety of the film exchange. Lucasfilm’s retrospective describes the reveal as a carefully guarded production secret and StarWars.com calls it momentous. See the Lucasfilm account of the reveal and the Empire quote collection.

Why these lines belong together
The original trilogy follows Luke from a farm boy drawn into the Rebellion, through Jedi training with Yoda, to his final confrontation with Vader and the Emperor. Lucasfilm’s official pages describe that arc across A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
That progression is why the best lines do more than sound memorable in isolation. Leia’s plea starts the journey; Han and Leia’s carbon-freezing exchange reveals what they mean to each other; Vader’s revelation changes Luke’s understanding of the fight; and Luke’s Jedi declaration brings the father-son conflict to a moral choice. The order above is one defensible editorial ranking, not an objective measure of what every viewer remembers most.
