The ten films span 1988 to 2022, from an early-career ensemble to Roberts’s reunion with George Clooney. This is TIME culture writer Jihane Bousfiha’s editorial ranking, not an objective consensus; the picks also include crime capers, a musical and relationship drama alongside conventional romantic comedies.
How this ranking works
The order below follows Jihane Bousfiha’s TIME ranking, published in 2022 and updated in July 2026. It is useful as a critic’s watchlist, not a measure of audience consensus. The list casts a wide net: a few films are rom-com hybrids, and some are ensemble stories rather than Roberts-led romances. Those distinctions matter when choosing what to watch.

1. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Jules Potter realizes she loves her longtime friend Michael just as he is about to marry someone else. Roberts plays Jules not as an uncomplicated romantic heroine but as a would-be saboteur whose actions make her difficult to root for. That moral messiness gives the comedy its bite and sets it apart from a more reassuring, wish-fulfillment romance. Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett co-star. Sony classifies the film as comedy and romance and lists 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions.
2. Notting Hill (1999)
A famous American actor, Anna Scott, falls for William Thacker, a London bookseller. The appeal is the friction between celebrity and private life: the romance has to make room for the public attention attached to one partner. Roberts and Hugh Grant give the story its warm, opposites-attract center. Universal lists a 124-minute runtime, a PG-13 rating and 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions.

Writer Richard Curtis described the premise as growing from a familiar social puzzle: “I would sometimes wonder what it would be like if I just turned up at my friends’ house, where I used to have dinner once a week, with the most famous person at that time, be it Madonna or whomever. It all sprang from there. How would my friends react? Who would try and be cool? How would you get through dinner? What would they say to you afterwards?” The quotation appears on Working Title Films’ page for the film.
3. Pretty Woman (1990)
Businessman Edward Lewis meets Vivian Ward in Los Angeles and hires her for a week; the arrangement develops into a romance. Directed by Garry Marshall and led by Roberts and Richard Gere, the film has the shape of a modern fairy tale. That familiar fantasy is part of its lasting appeal, but it is also worth recognizing that later viewers have criticized its framing of sex work and sexual assault. Nostalgia for the genre and discomfort with those elements can coexist. D23 dates its release to March 23, 1990.
Rank #2
4. Mystic Pizza (1988)
Three friends work at a seaside pizza restaurant in Connecticut while sorting through love and early adulthood. Roberts plays Daisy Araujo, who falls for a wealthy man. More than a polished, star-centered romance, this is a friendship-led coming-of-age story and an early-career showcase for Roberts. It gives the ranking a younger, less glossy counterpoint to the hits that followed.
5. Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Divorced parents reunite in an attempt to stop their daughter’s rushed engagement. Roberts and George Clooney play the exes, whose old rapport gives the family premise its romantic-comedy spark. It is the list’s most direct second-chance story, and it brought Roberts back to a leading rom-com role after a long gap, as TIME framed it in 2022. Universal describes the film as “a romantic comedy about the sweet surprise of second chances” in its December 2, 2022 home-entertainment announcement.

Universal lists a 104-minute runtime, PG-13 rating, and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions. Its original release schedule made the film available digitally on December 9, 2022, followed by Blu-ray and DVD on December 13; those dates do not establish current streaming availability.
6. The Mexican (2001)
This is the pick for viewers who want romance tangled up with action. Brad Pitt’s character searches for an antique pistol while Roberts’s character gets caught up with a hitman played by James Gandolfini. The crime and road-adventure plot makes it an action-rom-com rather than a conventional courtship story, with the central attraction sharing space with the caper.
Rank #4
7. Everyone Says I Love You (1996)
Woody Allen’s ensemble musical romantic comedy follows a family across its relationships, with Roberts as an American living in Venice. It is the list’s musical entry, but not a Roberts-centered romance. TIME notes that some viewers may also weigh allegations concerning the filmmaker when deciding whether to watch; those are allegations, not adjudicated findings.

Roberts and Clive Owen play former lovers and former government operatives who become corporate rivals and try to con their employers. The result is a romantic crime caper: less about a meet-cute than the chemistry and strategic sparring between two people who know how to deceive. Its more intricate plot makes it a good choice for viewers who want a heist-like story with the romance still in play.

9. America’s Sweethearts (2001)
Roberts plays Kiki Harrison, the assistant and sister of a movie star, amid a celebrity breakup and a publicity campaign for a new film. It is an ensemble Hollywood satire, not a straightforward Roberts-led romance. Her supporting role earns a place here because the story’s romantic chaos plays out inside the machinery of movie-star image-making.
10. Something to Talk About (1995)
This is the ranking’s most relationship-drama-leaning entry. Roberts plays Grace, whose marriage is shaken by her husband’s affair; the story also gives weight to family ties and the process of rebuilding trust. It only borders on rom-com, so it is a better fit for viewers who prefer a marriage crisis and its aftermath to a lighter meet-cute.
Which Julia Roberts rom-com should you watch?

- For action or crime alongside romance: Try The Mexican or Duplicity.
- For a musical ensemble: Pick Everyone Says I Love You.
- For family friction and a second chance: Choose Ticket to Paradise.
