Geoffrey Rush’s best films show a performer equally at home carrying a drama, sharpening an ensemble, voicing an animated character, or anchoring a blockbuster. This ranking weighs the centrality and strength of his role, the recognition attached to the performance, the film’s place in his career, and the range of genres represented. It is an editorial selection, not an objective or consensus scorecard.

10. Frida (2002)

Rush plays Leon Trotsky in Julie Taymor’s biographical drama about painter Frida Kahlo. It is a supporting role rather than a showcase built around Rush, but it belongs on this list for its place in a film that brings political and artistic history together. Trotsky also gives Rush another distinct historical figure to set beside his more prominent work in Elizabeth.

9. Munich (2005)

In Steven Spielberg’s political thriller, Rush plays Ephraim, a senior Israeli official connected to the operation at the story’s center. The part is measured and authoritative, well suited to a film driven by moral uncertainty rather than easy heroics. Munich earns its place by showing Rush contributing to a serious ensemble without relying on the eccentricity or theatricality of some of his better-known roles.

8. Finding Nemo (2003)

Rush voices Nigel, the pelican who becomes an unlikely ally to Marlin and Dory. The performance makes an animated supporting character feel vivid without overwhelming the film’s comic rhythm. Its inclusion matters because Rush’s screen career is not limited to live-action drama: voice acting is a genuine part of his range, and Nigel is among his most recognizable roles for family audiences.

7. Lantana (2001)

This Australian ensemble drama gives Rush a place in a knot of relationships, secrets, and grief rather than a single character-driven spotlight. Its quieter, contemporary setting broadens a list that could otherwise lean heavily on international historical dramas and studio hits. Lantana is a reminder that Rush’s career includes Australian cinema as well as high-profile work abroad.

6. Quills (2000)

Rush plays the Marquis de Sade in a dark period drama about censorship, confinement, and the consequences of artistic provocation. The role gives him room for a striking transformation, balancing the character’s public notoriety with the film’s questions about power and expression. AACTA identifies the performance as Oscar-nominated, recognition that makes it one of the most notable turns in his career.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

As Captain Hector Barbossa, Rush supplies the first Pirates of the Caribbean film with a memorable adversary: commanding, sardonic, and dangerous. The performance makes him more than a villain opposite the film’s swashbuckling heroes; Barbossa has a presence and comic timing of his own. The first film is the natural choice here because it introduces the franchise role that became one of Rush’s defining contributions to blockbuster entertainment.

4. Elizabeth (1998)

Rush’s Sir Francis Walsingham is a restrained counterweight in Shekhar Kapur’s historical drama. Rather than playing the character as a grand display, he gives him a watchful, calculating presence that suits the film’s world of court politics and danger. Elizabeth also shows how effectively Rush could make a supporting role essential to a film’s atmosphere and dramatic tension.

3. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Rush plays Philip Henslowe, a beleaguered theater owner whose comic desperation gives the film much of its warmth. The character is anxious and practical, a welcome contrast to the romance and grand literary conceit around him. This is one of Rush’s strongest comic supporting performances, and it demonstrates how much personality he can bring to a role without taking over the story.

2. The King’s Speech (2010)

As Lionel Logue, the speech therapist helping King George VI, Rush is a vital partner in a drama often remembered for its royal stakes. He makes Logue direct, resourceful, and humane, creating an effective counterbalance to Colin Firth’s more guarded king. The Television Academy includes the film among Rush’s award-recognized performances; its place here reflects both the force of his supporting work and the role’s importance to the film’s emotional core.

1. Shine (1996)

Rush’s performance as pianist David Helfgott in Shine remains the clearest centerpiece of his screen career. He portrays a gifted musician whose life is marked by psychological crisis and a difficult return to performance, giving the film its emotional and dramatic center. The Television Academy records Rush’s Academy Award win for the role and notes that it was the first film performance to win the Academy Award, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice Movie Award, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award. That exceptional recognition is part of the case for placing Shine first, alongside the scale and centrality of Rush’s performance.

Why these ten films represent Rush’s range

Rush’s career is not defined by one type of performance. These selections move from the lead role in Shine to substantial supporting turns in The King’s Speech and Elizabeth, comic work in Shakespeare in Love, voice acting in Finding Nemo, and franchise performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The ranking favors films that make that variety visible, while recognizing the roles most closely tied to his awards and career profile.

Best Value

The Television Academy’s 2026 biography records one acting Academy Award from four nominations, three BAFTA Film Awards from five nominations, two Golden Globes, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. These totals provide context for Rush’s career, but they do not determine the order above: the ranking also considers the work itself and each film’s distinct contribution to his screen legacy.
