Short answer: Spotify is the best general-purpose free music app for Android. Choose YouTube Music for videos, covers, live performances, and unusual recordings; Audiomack when free in-app offline listening matters; and Hoopla or Freegal if you have a participating public-library card.
The important qualification is that free rarely means unlimited, ad-free access to an entire commercial catalog. Free music may be ad-supported, radio-style, restricted by country, funded by a library, or limited to eligible offline tracks. The list below focuses on legitimate Android services available through Google Play or official first-party sources, with a U.S.-oriented ranking current to August 10, 2026.
What free means in this list
These apps fall into several different categories, and comparing them as though they all worked like Spotify would be misleading:
- Free, ad-supported streaming: Spotify, YouTube Music, SoundCloud, Audiomack, Pandora, Deezer where available, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and LiveOne.
- Free radio: Pandora, Jango, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and LiveOne. These services may let you choose an artist, genre, or station without letting you select every individual song.
- Free with a library card: Hoopla and Freegal. The participating library pays for access, and its catalog, borrowing quota, or download allowance controls what you receive.
- Free music files: a separate category involving Creative Commons music, public-domain recordings, or artist-authorized downloads. These files are not the same as offline cache stored inside a streaming app.
Every app below is legitimate as a service, but availability, licensing, advertisements, playback controls, and downloads can change by country, account, device, and rights holder.

1. Spotify — best overall
Spotify is the safest starting point for most Android users who want mainstream music, playlists, discovery tools, podcasts, social sharing, and broad device support without paying a monthly subscription. Spotify describes its basic service as free music listening supported by advertising, and its support documentation explains the core free service.
What the free tier includes
- A large general-purpose catalog of songs, albums, playlists, and podcasts.
- Ad-supported music playback.
- Personalized discovery and playlist features.
- Free mobile playback whose exact controls can vary by account, market, device, and rollout. Spotify documents Smart Shuffle and free-playback behavior, so do not assume that every free account has unrestricted manual song selection.
- Background listening within the supported free mobile experience, subject to Android battery and app settings.
What it does not include
Free users cannot download music for offline listening. Spotify allows free users to download podcasts, but music, albums, and playlists require Premium for offline access. Even Premium downloads are app-managed offline access, not ordinary MP3 files that you own and can move freely between devices.
Verdict: Choose Spotify first if you want the broadest all-purpose experience and can tolerate advertisements and free mobile playback restrictions. Do not choose it for free offline music.
2. YouTube Music — best for videos, covers, live versions, and rare recordings
YouTube Music has a different strength from Spotify: it combines official releases with music videos, live performances, covers, remixes, soundtrack material, artist uploads, and recordings that may not appear in a conventional streaming catalog. Its free, ad-supported service documentation says free users can play songs, albums, playlists, podcasts, and music videos on demand, with unlimited skipping.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11What the free tier includes
- On-demand playback of available songs, albums, playlists, and videos.
- Music videos and alternate versions that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
- Podcasts, with some podcast background and download behavior treated differently from music.
- Unlimited skips according to Google’s documented free YouTube Music experience.
What it does not include
Ordinary free music playback does not include screen-off background listening in the official Android app. Background music playback and music downloads are Premium features. The regular YouTube app is not an official way to extract audio or MP3 files: Google says downloads are available only where the service authorizes them, and YouTube’s terms restrict downloading or circumventing service limits except where authorized, permitted by the service, or allowed by law. Its download help page also explains why the app is not an audio-file downloader.
Search results can mix official tracks, user-uploaded recordings, covers, and videos. Check the uploader and version before assuming you have found an official release.
Verdict: YouTube Music is the best free choice for music videos, covers, live shows, rare versions, and unusual recordings, but not for free screen-off or offline music.
3. SoundCloud — best for independent artists and remixes
SoundCloud is particularly valuable when the music you want is outside the mainstream streaming catalog. It hosts material from independent musicians, DJs, labels, and creators, including electronic music, remixes, DJ sets, bootlegs, demos, and emerging artists. SoundCloud says tens of millions of tracks can be heard free, including music from major labels and independent artists.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What the free tier includes
- Ad-supported listening to eligible tracks.
- Independent releases and remixes that may not exist on Spotify or Deezer.
- Creator pages, reposts, playlists, and music discovery built around the upload ecosystem.
- Generally available mobile background playback, although track, account, device, and territory behavior can differ.
Important restrictions
Not every upload is available as a complete free stream. Some tracks are limited to 30-second previews unless the listener has Go+, and rights holders decide where tracks can be played and whether they can be saved offline. Offline listening is a paid feature; SoundCloud documents the restriction in its offline-listening help.
The platform also distinguishes ordinary interruptions from promoted tracks. A paid plan may remove interruptive advertising without making every promoted track disappear; SoundCloud explains this in its advertising documentation.
Verdict: SoundCloud is the best discovery app for independent music, remixes, DJ sets, and emerging artists. Treat availability as rights-holder-dependent, and do not assume every upload is a permanent or downloadable release.
4. Audiomack — best for mixtapes and limited free offline listening
Audiomack is strongest in hip-hop, rap, Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall, electronic music, mixtapes, and emerging releases. It is the most useful mainstream-adjacent option on this list when free offline playback matters.
What the free tier includes
- Free full-track and mixtape streaming supported by ads.
- On-demand playback for available songs and albums.
- Downloads for eligible songs, albums, and playlists.
- Android Auto, Wear OS, and local-file playback are advertised on the Google Play listing.
How Audiomack downloads work
- Open a song, album, or playlist in the Android app.
- Tap the Download icon.
- Open the app’s Library or Downloads area to play it without an internet connection.
- If the item is marked Premium, select another eligible track or subscribe.
Audiomack’s free offline selection is limited. Its support pages explain that downloads remain inside the app and do not ordinarily appear as transferable MP3 files in the phone’s music folder. See the explanations of how downloads work and Premium downloads.
Verdict: Choose Audiomack if free in-app offline listening is more important than having the complete commercial catalog. Its downloads are convenient, but they are app-locked rather than files you own.
5. Pandora — best for personalized radio
Pandora is built for lean-back listening. Choose an artist, song, or genre and let the app create a station instead of selecting every track yourself. Its current plans page describes free personalized stations, podcasts, search-and-play features, and some ad-unlocked functions.

What the free tier includes
- Personalized radio stations supported by audio advertising.
- Station-based listening that works well while driving or doing other tasks.
- Some temporary access to on-demand functions after watching an advertisement.
- Background playback for the free radio experience.
Pandora’s free experience is not equivalent to unlimited Premium-style on-demand playback. Skips, replays, playlists, offline access, and manual song selection can be limited by licensing and account type. Pandora’s developer documentation describes the station-focused free tier and its restrictions, while the consumer plans page describes ad-unlocked features; these should not be simplified into a promise of unlimited on-demand listening.
Pandora is also a U.S.-only service according to its Google Play listing.
Verdict: Pandora is the best choice for personalized stations and the worst fit for someone who wants to choose every song or download music for free.
6. Deezer — best Spotify alternative where Deezer Free is available
Deezer offers a credible alternative to Spotify, with personalized Flow recommendations, playlists, lyrics, discovery tools, podcasts, and broad catalog access. Its Google Play listing identifies Deezer Free as an ad-supported tier with limited features.
The caveat is geography. Deezer Free availability and mobile controls differ by country, and public descriptions do not establish one universal free Android experience. Premium adds ad-free listening, offline downloads, unlimited skips, on-demand listening, and HiFi, but those are paid features.
Recommended Free Tools
Before installing, check the current Deezer offering for your country at Deezer’s official site. Do not assume that a feature available in one market will appear in another.
Verdict: Deezer is worth trying if you prefer its interface or Flow recommendations, but it is a less predictable free recommendation than Spotify for U.S. Android users.
7. iHeartRadio — best for U.S. radio and artist stations
iHeartRadio combines local and national live radio with artist stations, playlists, podcasts, and music programming. Its help center describes the service as free, while its current skip-limit page documents concrete restrictions.
Free-tier limits
- Free access to music stations, curated playlists, podcasts, and broadcast radio.
- Advertising, including commercials that may be part of a live station’s broadcast.
- Up to six skips per hour per station and up to 15 skips per day across artist stations and playlists, according to iHeartRadio’s published limits.
- Android Auto support is advertised through the Android listing.
Full on-demand catalog access and offline music are associated with paid features rather than ordinary free radio. Local station availability can also depend on location and streaming rights.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Verdict: Pick iHeartRadio when radio is the priority and you want U.S. stations, artist radio, news, sports, or broadcast programming rather than a fully controllable song library.
8. TuneIn Radio — best for live and international radio
TuneIn is a directory and streaming service for radio stations, not a universal on-demand music catalog. Its free app is useful for international stations, local broadcasters, college radio, genre stations, and music programming from places that conventional music apps may overlook.
TuneIn says its free service offers access to 100,000 radio stations and 5.7 million podcasts, though such figures are promotional and can change. Its free-versus-Premium explanation describes live radio and podcasts in the free app, with extra content and reduced advertising in Premium.
Free listeners can hear both TuneIn advertising and advertising inserted by the station itself. A station stream can change, disappear, or use its own schedule and commercial breaks. You generally cannot search the entire TuneIn service and play any individual song on demand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verdict: TuneIn is the best choice for live and international radio, not for downloading individual songs or building a controlled music library.
9. Hoopla — best library-card option for temporary offline listening
Hoopla is one of the most genuinely useful legal free options for people with a participating public-library card. It offers music albums alongside ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and television. According to Hoopla’s music page, eligible users can stream or download music to Android devices without paying a monthly subscription.
Rank #3
- USB-C plug and play: Connect to phones, tablets and laptops that support USB-C digital audio; ready for lessons and everyday listening without Bluetooth pairing or headphone charging
- Mic and in-line controls: Join online classes and work calls with the built-in microphone; adjust volume and manage music playback from the cord without reaching for your device
- Comfortable fit: Soft memory foam ear cushions, an adjustable headband and 90-degree rotating ear cups help you find a comfortable position for studying, working or listening
- 40 mm stereo drivers: Enjoy music, movies and spoken audio with stereo sound; the over-ear cushions provide passive sound isolation to help reduce surrounding distractions
- Foldable for travel: Fold the headphones for storage between classes or commutes; 1.2 m braided cord for everyday use, with headphones and user manual included; carrying bag not included
How to use Hoopla
- Install Hoopla from Google Play or the official Hoopla source.
- Select your participating library.
- Enter your library-card number and required PIN.
- Search for an album or browse the music section.
- Borrow the album, then stream it or use the app’s download option for offline listening.
Hoopla access is a loan, not permanent ownership. Loan periods, monthly borrowing limits, and catalog size vary by library. Some libraries do not participate, and a library that offers another digital service may not offer Hoopla.
Verdict: Hoopla is excellent for ad-free or low-interruption album listening and temporary offline access, provided your local library participates.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →10. Freegal Music — best library-card option for downloads
Freegal is another public-library service, but it is especially interesting when the reader wants downloadable music rather than a temporary Hoopla loan. Its Google Play listing says users at participating libraries can stream and download music for online and offline listening.
The exact catalog, streaming allowance, and download quota depend on the library’s agreement. Freegal’s listing promotes a catalog of more than 15 million songs and more than 200 genres, but catalog numbers and availability can change. The listing also describes downloaded songs as yours to keep; check the current terms presented by your library before treating that as a universal ownership guarantee.
Freegal may be less polished than Spotify for discovery and may not have the newest or most popular release in every market. It can nevertheless be valuable for catalog music, classical recordings, specialty genres, and legal downloads.
Verdict: Check Freegal before paying for a subscription if your library participates and your main goal is downloadable music subject to clear local limits.
What free music apps actually let you download?
The word download hides several different things. A streaming app may save encrypted, account-controlled data inside its own storage; a library app may lend an album temporarily; or a service may provide a file that can be managed more normally. These are not interchangeable.
| Service | Free offline result | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | No free music downloads | Free users can download podcasts. Music downloads require Premium. |
| YouTube Music | No free music downloads | Music downloads require Premium in the official app. |
| SoundCloud | Paid offline feature | Some creators may separately authorize file downloads, but free streaming does not provide general offline access. |
| Audiomack | Limited free in-app downloads | Eligible tracks can be saved for offline listening, but some require Premium and the downloads stay inside Audiomack. |
| Pandora | No ordinary free offline mode | Offline listening is a paid feature rather than a normal free radio function. |
| Hoopla | Temporary library download | Borrowed music can be downloaded for use during the loan period and expires afterward. |
| Freegal | Library download subject to local terms | Availability and quotas depend on the participating library’s contract. |
| Radio apps | Usually no individual-song download | Jango, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and LiveOne primarily stream stations or curated programming. |
For genuinely free offline listening, Audiomack, Hoopla, and Freegal are the strongest choices in this list, but each has a different limitation. Audiomack is app-only and track-limited; Hoopla is temporary borrowing; Freegal depends on your library’s rules.
Can free music apps play with the Android screen off?
Background playback is separate from ordinary streaming. A song can be available for free and still stop when the screen locks.
- YouTube Music: free music playback normally stops with the screen off; background music playback requires Premium. Podcasts have separate exceptions.
- Spotify: generally supports background mobile playback in its free experience, although free controls and Smart Shuffle behavior vary.
- SoundCloud and Audiomack: generally support background streaming in the Android experience, subject to track, account, device, and battery settings.
- Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Jango, and LiveOne: generally support screen-off listening for their free radio or streaming experiences.
- Hoopla and Freegal: downloaded or streamed content is played through their own apps, with behavior affected by the loan, account, and app session.
Do not treat a browser workaround or modified APK as an official solution. It may violate service terms, stop working, or expose your account and device to malware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre these free music apps legal?
The apps in this article are legitimate distribution services, but they use different models:
- Commercial services pay rights holders through advertising, subscriptions, licensing arrangements, or broadcast agreements.
- SoundCloud and Audiomack also contain artist-uploaded material. Tracks can be removed, restricted by territory, changed to preview-only playback, or made unavailable when rights change.
- YouTube Music includes user-uploaded videos as well as official releases. The presence of a recording on the platform does not mean that it is permanently available or that you own it.
- Hoopla and Freegal operate through public-library agreements. The library card gives access under the service’s loan, quota, and download rules.
- Jamendo and similar Creative Commons services can provide free music, but the license may require attribution or restrict commercial use. Jamendo’s Android documentation describes free streaming and downloads from a Creative Commons catalog; check the license attached to each work. The Free Music Archive terms are another useful reminder that free access does not erase copyright conditions.
Do not use cracked Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer, or Pandora APKs, YouTube-to-MP3 converters, or unofficial downloaders. Besides violating service rules, modified apps can steal credentials, install malware, or break after a server-side change. YouTube’s terms of service specifically limit downloading and attempts to circumvent restrictions unless authorized, permitted by the service, or allowed by law.
Other worthwhile alternatives
Jango Radio
Jango is a strong radio-first alternative if you value no commercial interruptions more than a large on-demand catalog. Jango says its service offers free personalized radio without commercial interruptions or ads in its FAQ, and its Android listing is available through Google Play. It is not in the main ten because it is less useful for selecting individual mainstream songs or downloading music.
LiveOne
LiveOne offers free ad-supported stations, podcasts, hosted programs, recommendations, and curated music channels. Its Android listing describes the free service, while its station support page explains the station model. It overlaps with Pandora, Jango, and TuneIn, and its most useful on-demand and offline controls are paid.
Jamendo and Creative Commons catalogs
Use Jamendo when your priority is independent or Creative Commons music rather than current mainstream hits. Recheck Google Play availability immediately before publication or installation because the dossier’s Android documentation is not a guarantee of current app-store availability. Always read the license: personal listening, attribution, remixing, and commercial use can have different permissions.

Amazon Music and other bundled services
Amazon Music should not be casually labeled free merely because some listeners receive music through Prime. Prime is a paid membership. Amazon Music Free may offer an ad-supported, no-offline tier where available, but it is a different proposition from music included with an existing Prime subscription. This distinction is also noted in current comparison coverage.
Which app should you choose?
- I want the broadest general-purpose catalog: Start with Spotify.
- I want videos, covers, live versions, or unusual recordings: Use YouTube Music.
- I want independent artists, remixes, and DJ sets: Try SoundCloud.
- I want free offline listening without paying: Try Audiomack first, then check Hoopla and Freegal if you have a library card. Accept that Audiomack downloads remain in the app.
- I want a service to choose the music for me: Choose Pandora or Jango.
- I want U.S. broadcast radio: Use iHeartRadio.
- I want international or local live stations: Use TuneIn.
- I have a public-library card: Check both Hoopla and Freegal through your library’s digital-services page. One may have a better catalog or quota than the other.
- I want no ads: Jango is the strongest free radio candidate based on its current first-party claim, while library services may offer lower-interruption listening. No commercial service should be assumed to provide unrestricted, ad-free, full-catalog music at no cost.
- I want a Spotify alternative: Try Deezer only after checking whether Deezer Free and its desired controls are available in your country.
Android practicalities and troubleshooting
The app is free but a song is not
A free app download does not guarantee free access to every song. A track may be Premium-only, limited to a preview, unavailable in your country, removed by a rights holder, or restricted by your account.
The download button is missing
Check whether the service reserves music downloads for Premium, whether the track is eligible, whether you are signed in, and whether you are looking at a podcast or radio stream rather than downloadable music. Library services may require an active loan before the download control appears.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Offline playback has stopped
App-managed offline content may require periodic online verification. Audiomack downloads remain tied to the app. Hoopla downloads expire when the loan ends. Subscription-based offline access can disappear after cancellation, sign-out, account changes, or app removal.
Ads are still playing
Advertising can come from the streaming app, the radio station, a creator, sponsored content, or a podcast itself. A paid tier may remove one type of advertising without removing every promotion. SoundCloud, for example, distinguishes interruptive advertisements from promoted tracks.
Android stops playback when the screen locks
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Apps and select the music app.
- Open Battery.
- Allow background use or select an unrestricted battery setting if appropriate.
- Check mobile-data restrictions, notification permissions, and the app’s own background-playback settings.
- Reopen the app and test with the screen locked.
Menu names differ between Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, and other Android devices, so the path may not look identical. Also check whether Android Auto or Wear OS support is listed in the app’s current Google Play page; compatibility can change with app and vehicle versions.
A library-card login fails
Your library may not participate in Hoopla or Freegal, may require a separate PIN, may restrict access to local residents, or may have exhausted its monthly borrowing or download quota. Visit the library’s digital-services page instead of assuming that every library card works with every service.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Audio quality and data use
Avoid choosing an app solely from an old bitrate chart. Sound quality depends on the app, account tier, codec, device, network, content, country, and current rollout. SoundCloud, for example, documents standard streaming at 128 kbps MP3 and High Quality at 256 kbps AAC for eligible Go+ content, but that information should not be generalized to Spotify, YouTube Music, or every SoundCloud track. See SoundCloud’s current quality documentation.
Streaming music also uses mobile data. If you have a limited plan, use Wi-Fi for long listening sessions and prefer a legitimate offline option such as eligible Audiomack content, a Hoopla loan, or a Freegal download. Remember that offline access may expire or remain locked to the app.
Final recommendation
Install Spotify first for everyday mainstream listening. Add YouTube Music if videos, covers, live performances, and rare versions matter. Add Audiomack if you want a legal free service with some in-app offline listening. Before paying for anything, check whether your public library supports Hoopla or Freegal; a library card can provide the best legal route to temporary listening or downloadable tracks.
The right app depends less on the word free than on which compromise you accept: ads, radio-style playback, country restrictions, limited downloads, temporary borrowing, or an independent-music catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best completely free music app for Android?
For most listeners, Spotify is the best free general-purpose option, but it is ad-supported and does not provide free music downloads. Audiomack is a better choice if limited free in-app offline listening is the priority, while Hoopla and Freegal may be better if you have a participating library card.
Can I download free music as MP3 files from Spotify or YouTube Music?
No. Spotify’s free tier allows podcast downloads but not music downloads, and YouTube Music requires Premium for music downloads in the official app. Audiomack provides limited offline downloads, but they remain inside the app. Use artist-authorized downloads or clearly licensed Creative Commons and public-domain sources when you need ordinary music files.
Which free music app works with the screen off?
Spotify, SoundCloud, Audiomack, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Jango, and LiveOne generally support background playback within their free streaming or radio experiences, subject to device settings and account restrictions. YouTube Music’s free music playback normally requires the screen to remain on; background music playback is a Premium feature.
Are free music apps legal?
The services listed here distribute music through licensing, advertising, artist uploads, radio agreements, or public-library arrangements. However, individual tracks can be restricted or removed, and a recording being available in an app does not mean you own it. Avoid cracked APKs and unauthorized ripping tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I use a library card to listen to music for free?
Yes, if your library participates. Hoopla generally provides temporary album loans that can be downloaded during the loan period. Freegal provides streaming and downloads subject to the participating library’s catalog, quota, and terms. Check your library’s digital-services page for eligibility.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Spotify is the best place to start for free mainstream music on Android. YouTube Music wins for music videos and rare versions, SoundCloud for independent uploads and remixes, and Audiomack for limited free in-app offline listening.
