10 Best Free Anime Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free anime streaming in the United States falls into two very different categories: on-demand libraries such as Tubi and RetroCrush, and free linear channels that decide what plays next. The distinction matters. A service may be free without letting you choose every episode, while a specialist catalog may have excellent older shows but few current releases.

The services below are legal options available without paying for a subscription, checked against their stated US availability and viewing models as of August 8, 2026. Most use advertising. Kanopy is different: access depends on a participating library or university.

Quick comparison

Service or access point What you get Best for Paid subscription needed?
Tubi On-demand anime with ads Broad general selection No
RetroCrush Classic shows, films, and some live programming Older anime No for its free option
Crunchyroll Channel on Roku Free 24/7 linear channel Scheduled viewing on Roku No
Crunchyroll Channel on Amazon Freevee Free 24/7 linear channel Crunchyroll programming without the regular app No
Crunchyroll Channel on Pluto TV Free 24/7 linear channel Anime alongside other free channels No
Crunchyroll Channel on LG Smart TV Free 24/7 linear channel LG television owners No
Crunchyroll Channel on Vizio Smart TV Free 24/7 linear channel Vizio television owners No
Pluto TV Anime TV Scheduled anime channel Channel surfing No
Other Crunchyroll Channel platforms Free linear anime channel TCL TV+, Xumo, Sling, or Vizio WatchFree+ No
Kanopy Library-access streaming with viewing tickets Library-card holders No, but eligibility is required

The ten entries include separate access points where that is the practical choice. The Crunchyroll Channel is the same basic free channel across supported platforms; installing a different app does not unlock a larger Crunchyroll on-demand catalog.

1. Tubi

Tubi is the strongest first stop for most viewers who want to select anime on demand without paying. Its navigation includes dedicated Anime TV and Anime Movies sections.

  • 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

The catalog includes recognizable titles such as Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Hunter × Hunter, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Death Note, and Ghost Stories. The mix includes subtitled and dubbed material, though the audio and subtitle options vary by title.

Tubi describes itself as free and legal, and basic viewing does not always require an account. An account is useful for watchlists and keeping track of viewing. Expect advertising and a catalog that changes as licensing agreements expire. If a series is missing, that is usually a rights issue rather than a hidden search setting.

2. RetroCrush

RetroCrush is aimed at viewers who want vintage anime rather than the newest seasonal shows. Its catalog concentrates on classic television series, older films, and curated titles that are often overlooked by general-purpose streaming services.

The site is organized around Home, Live TV, Movies, Shows, Genres, Watchlists, and Search. That makes it easier to browse by era or format instead of relying only on a title you already know.

RetroCrush has a free, ad-supported option alongside paid plans. Its support information lists paid pricing at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, but you do not need either plan for the service’s free offering. Availability can vary by title, platform, and region, so check the individual program page before planning a long watch-through.

3. Crunchyroll Channel on Roku

The Crunchyroll Channel is not the regular Crunchyroll application with its full library made free. It is a separate, curated 24/7 channel that runs anime on a schedule and does not require an account or paid subscription.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

On Roku, open the channel guide or search for Crunchyroll Channel, then watch whatever is currently airing. It is a good option when you want a television-style experience rather than choosing every episode. The listed programming has included Horimiya, Ranking of Kings, Moriarty the Patriot, PSYCHO-PASS, and Code Geass.

The drawback is control: you cannot assume that a particular episode will be available when you sit down to watch. The lineup changes, and the channel is not a substitute for Crunchyroll Premium’s on-demand library and simulcasts.

4. Crunchyroll Channel on Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee is another US platform carrying the free Crunchyroll Channel. It is useful for viewers who already use the Freevee interface on a television or streaming device and want anime without starting a paid Crunchyroll membership.

Use Freevee’s live-channel area rather than searching the regular Crunchyroll subscription catalog. What you receive is scheduled programming with advertisements. The channel’s current lineup can change, so treat it as a free anime station—not as a permanent collection of every series shown in its promotions.

5. Crunchyroll Channel on Pluto TV

Pluto TV carries the Crunchyroll Channel in the United States and also lists its own Anime TV channel. Pluto combines live channels with a separate On Demand section, both supported by advertising.

This is a strong choice for channel surfers. Open Live TV, browse the channel guide, and select the anime channel that fits what you want to watch. The important limitation is that a show airing on a live channel is not automatically available in Pluto’s on-demand section. Scheduled availability and on-demand availability are separate.

6. Crunchyroll Channel on an LG Smart TV

Owners of supported LG Smart TVs can access the Crunchyroll Channel directly through the television’s free channel offering. No Crunchyroll account or Premium plan is needed for the channel.

This is one of the simplest options for casual viewing: open the TV’s channel interface, find Crunchyroll Channel, and watch the current program. It is less useful if you have a specific series or episode in mind, because the channel follows a schedule rather than providing a browsable full-season library.

7. Crunchyroll Channel on a Vizio Smart TV

Supported Vizio Smart TVs also list the Crunchyroll Channel among their free programming options. The viewing model is the same as on Roku, Freevee, LG, and the other supported platforms: a curated linear feed, advertisements, and no paid subscription required.

Vizio owners should distinguish this channel from Vizio WatchFree+, which is another platform listed as carrying Crunchyroll programming. Both are access routes to scheduled free viewing, not ways to obtain Crunchyroll’s complete premium catalog.

8. Pluto TV’s Anime TV channel

Pluto’s own Anime TV channel deserves separate consideration from the Crunchyroll Channel. It is a scheduled channel listed in Pluto’s official channel lineup and may suit viewers who want a dedicated anime block without searching through a large on-demand catalog.

Go to Live TV on Pluto’s web player or open the live guide in the app. If nothing appealing is airing, check On Demand, but do not expect the two sections to mirror each other. Pluto’s channel schedules and available titles can change.

9. Crunchyroll Channel on other free-TV platforms

Crunchyroll’s US platform guide also lists the free channel on Pluto TV, Sling TV, TCL TV+, Xumo, and Vizio WatchFree+, in addition to Roku, Freevee, LG, and Vizio Smart TVs. These are useful alternatives when one app is unavailable on your device.

Choose the platform you already have rather than installing several versions expecting different episodes. The channel is curated centrally, so changing from Xumo to Roku does not turn it into an on-demand service. Platform availability can depend on the device model, app version, and US market.

10. Kanopy

Kanopy is worth checking if you have a public-library card or university login. It is not an anime specialist, and its anime selection depends heavily on what your institution licenses, but it can provide films and series without commercial advertising in the usual ad-supported sense.

First add a participating library or university. Many titles use monthly viewing tickets: tickets reset on the first day of each month and unused tickets do not roll over. Libraries can also impose local limits or restrict access because of budgets.

Series have another catch. Kanopy currently lists access periods of three days for seasons under four hours, five days for seasons lasting four to ten hours, and seven days for seasons longer than ten hours. Check the ticket requirement and viewing period beside the play button before starting a season.

How to choose the right service

  1. Want to pick episodes on demand? Start with Tubi, then try RetroCrush for older titles.
  2. Want a television channel? Use Pluto TV or the Crunchyroll Channel on the device you already own.
  3. Want classic anime? Go directly to RetroCrush rather than searching general free-TV apps.
  4. Have a library card? Search Kanopy, but check ticket costs and the access deadline first.
  5. Need a current seasonal simulcast? Free services are unlikely to provide the complete current catalog. Crunchyroll’s full library and simulcasts are associated with Premium, not the free Crunchyroll Channel.

What “free” does—and does not—mean

Legal free services generally pay for rights through advertising, institutional funding, or a limited channel model. They do not promise every anime, every season, or permanent access to a title. Licensing is negotiated title by title and territory by territory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with sites that offer every current release, multiple mirror players, or downloads without identifying a legitimate distributor. A YouTube upload is not automatically authorized because it plays without a paywall; use verified official channels or clearly labeled licensed releases. For dependable legal viewing, start with the services above and check the title page in your own US location.

FAQ

Is Crunchyroll free for its entire anime catalog?

No. The free Crunchyroll product covered here is the separate Crunchyroll Channel, a scheduled 24/7 service. Crunchyroll Premium provides full-library access, ad-free viewing, and simulcasts.

Which free anime streaming service is best for on-demand viewing?

Tubi is the best general starting point because it has dedicated Anime TV and Anime Movies sections, recognizable titles, and no paid subscription requirement. Its catalog and availability can change.

Can I watch any episode I want on Pluto TV?

Not necessarily. Pluto TV has scheduled live channels and a separate on-demand area. A title playing on Anime TV or the Crunchyroll Channel may not be available on demand at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Kanopy offer unlimited free anime?

No. Kanopy access requires a participating library or university, and many titles use monthly viewing tickets. Tickets reset monthly, do not roll over, and local institutions may impose additional limits.

Are free anime streaming sites legal?

The services listed here are legal US options. Avoid assuming that an unverified website or YouTube upload is authorized simply because it is free; look for an official distributor or licensed platform.

The Bottom Line

Use Tubi for the most convenient free on-demand starting point, RetroCrush for classic anime, and Pluto TV or the Crunchyroll Channel when scheduled viewing suits you. Kanopy is a worthwhile bonus for eligible library users, but its catalog and monthly tickets make it a supplement rather than a complete anime service. None of these options guarantees a permanent or complete catalog; legal availability changes with licensing.
