Short answer: PBS KIDS Video is the clearest free, verified educational choice for Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. Amazon Kids+ is the broadest controlled Amazon ecosystem, while Prime Video and YouTube provide educational viewing rather than a complete curriculum. Many excellent products—including Khan Academy Kids and Duolingo ABC—are designed for touchscreens and should not be called Fire TV apps unless the current U.S. Amazon Appstore listing confirms a TV version.
This guide covers the U.S. Amazon Appstore and Fire TV ecosystem as checked August 16–18, 2026. Availability, catalogs, prices and supported devices can change by country, account and Fire OS version.
Fire TV apps are not the same as Fire tablet apps
Amazon’s Appstore filters apps by declared hardware, software, geography and developer settings. A listing visible on a Fire tablet, Android phone or iPad may be hidden on Fire TV, especially when it requires a touchscreen. Fire TV also has no touchscreen, so remote navigation is a decisive test.
The recommendations below use three labels:
- Native Fire TV: designed and published for television use.
- TV learning service: a Fire TV video or subscription service with educational content, but not necessarily a structured course.
- Tablet companion: potentially excellent learning software that should remain on a tablet unless its current Fire TV listing proves otherwise.
For any app not directly verified here, search from the Fire TV device itself and confirm the publisher, supported model and remote operation before paying.

The 10 best options
1. PBS KIDS Video — best free native option
Best for: Preschool and early-elementary children who can watch independently. Learning: Literacy, science, nature, problem-solving and social-emotional themes vary by program. The catalog includes episodes, clips, shorts, movies and podcasts.
What works on Fire TV: PBS explicitly lists Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. The large-screen, remote-controlled interface suits short family sessions, but it is primarily video rather than adaptive practice. Cost: PBS says download and use are free with no subscription required.
Safety and parent use: It is a child-focused, curated catalog with a grown-ups area describing programs and learning goals. It is not a formal progress-reporting curriculum, and children can remain passive viewers.

Verdict: Start here when you want trustworthy educational television without another monthly bill.
2. Amazon Kids+ — best all-in-one Amazon ecosystem
Best for: Families already using Amazon devices and wanting books, videos, games and apps under child profiles. Amazon supports age filters, screen-time limits, educational goals, activity visibility through Parent Dashboard and in-app-purchase controls; features vary by device.
What works on Fire TV: Amazon documents child profiles on Fire TV. That does not mean every Kids+ title or app is published for TV, so inspect each item’s device compatibility. Cost: Kids+ is a subscription; retrieve the current U.S. price and trial terms from the official signup page on the day you subscribe.

Drawback: This is a broad content bundle, not one sequenced, standards-based course. Catalog licensing differs by device and country.
Verdict: Choose it for centralized Amazon controls and variety, not for detailed academic reporting.

3. Prime Video — best for educational shows and documentaries
Best for: Nature documentaries, children’s series, science explainers and school-subject programs in a familiar Fire TV interface.
What works on Fire TV: Remote-friendly playback and profiles make viewing simple. Educational quality and age suitability depend on each title. A program may be included with Prime, rented, purchased or supplied through an additional channel; check its U.S. listing before starting playback.
Safety: Treat it as general streaming, not a constrained learning environment. Use child profiles and review titles yourself.
Browse the Prime Video storefront.
Verdict: Useful when you already pay for Prime, but do not confuse a large catalog with a curriculum.
4. YouTube — largest free library, greatest safety burden
Best for: Carefully selected read-alouds, museum videos, demonstrations, music and how-to content. Amazon confirms the official YouTube app on Fire TV streaming players and Fire TV Edition televisions (Amazon announcement).
What works on Fire TV: Video playback is remote-friendly, but search, recommendations, comments, autoplay, advertising and user-generated uploads can lead away from suitable material. The official YouTube app is not automatically the same as a dedicated YouTube Kids experience.

5. Noggin — preschool video and learning service
Best for: Younger children who benefit from familiar characters, short lessons and preschool entertainment.
Fire TV and cost: Confirm the current U.S. Amazon Appstore listing, supported Fire TV model and subscription price before purchase. A TV subscription may be billed through the vendor or an app store, and the catalog can differ by region.

- Enjoy the show in 4K Ultra HD, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
Educational profile: Expect guided video and activities rather than the adaptive, touch-based practice found in tablet curricula. Check whether activities are actually navigable with the remote.
Verdict: Consider it only after live compatibility and billing details match your household.
6. BrainPOP or BrainPOP Jr. — best subject-based elementary content
Best for: Elementary science, social studies, language arts and related topics explained through animated videos and activities. BrainPOP Jr. is aimed at younger elementary learners than the main service.
Fire TV and cost: Verify a current U.S. Fire TV app listing and whether your family, school or institutional plan applies on television. Prices and access models are plan-dependent.
Remote question: Videos may work well from a couch; quizzes, maps and activities may require more precise input or a second device. Do not assume progress synchronizes across TV and web versions.
Verdict: A strong subject-learning candidate when the current TV build supports the activities your child needs.
Official site: BrainPOP.
7. ABCmouse — best structured early-learning curriculum, if TV support is confirmed
Best for: Guided early literacy, math and related activities for roughly ages 2–8.
Fire TV and cost: Confirm the current Amazon Appstore listing, remote requirements, subscription price, trial and billing route. Tablet availability does not prove Fire TV compatibility.
Why the distinction matters: A sequenced curriculum usually depends on tapping, dragging and frequent feedback. If navigation is awkward with the remote, use the tablet version instead of forcing it onto a television.
Verdict: Choose it for structure only when your exact Fire TV model runs the TV version comfortably.

9. Khan Academy Kids — best free tablet companion
Best for: Children ages 2–8 practicing early literacy, math, books, creativity and adaptive skills through interactive games and activities. Khan Academy describes the app as free.
Fire TV status: The available official material establishes the educational app, not native Fire TV support. Its touch-first design makes a tablet, phone or compatible touchscreen the safer recommendation.
What to do: Use Fire TV for a related PBS or documentary explanation, then move to Khan Academy Kids on a tablet for practice and feedback. Do not sideload it simply to force TV installation.
Sources: Khan Academy Kids and Khan Academy Kids for schools.
Verdict: Excellent companion learning software, but not a confirmed Fire TV app.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Fire TV status: Treat it as a tablet-first product unless the current Fire TV listing explicitly confirms remote support. Letter tracing, tapping and drag interactions are generally poor matches for a television remote.
Cost and safety: Check current terms, account requirements and device support on the listing you install; do not infer them from a mobile version.
Verdict: Keep this category of practice on a tablet and use Fire TV for shared, curated viewing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose by age and learning goal
- Ages 2–4: PBS KIDS Video for curated viewing; Amazon Kids+ or a verified preschool service for a broader catalog. Use a tablet for interactive phonics and fine-motor practice.
- Kindergarten to early elementary: PBS KIDS, selected Prime Video programs and BrainPOP Jr. where TV support is confirmed. Pair viewing with books or hands-on activities.
- Reading practice: Prefer Khan Academy Kids or Duolingo ABC on a touchscreen; Fire TV alone is usually passive.
- Science and nature: PBS KIDS, BrainPOP and carefully selected Prime Video documentaries.
- Free choices: PBS KIDS Video is the clearest verified option; YouTube is free but requires the most supervision.
- Families already paying Amazon: Check whether Kids+ adds useful content before buying another service, and verify that the specific titles run on your TV.
Fire TV setup and safety checklist
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Find or the Appstore area and search the exact app name.
- Confirm the publisher, U.S. availability and compatibility with your Stick HD, Stick Lite, Stick 4K, Stick 4K Max, Cube or Fire TV television.
- Read whether a touchscreen, keyboard, mouse or controller is required.
- Install the app, sign in as an adult and create a child profile where supported.
- Set age filters, educational goals, screen-time limits and purchase restrictions in Amazon Kids or the service’s own settings.
- Restrict search and autoplay where available; test voice search so it does not expose broader results than intended.
- Navigate several screens with only the remote before allowing independent use.
Menu names vary by Fire OS version. Use the labels currently shown on your device.
When an app does not appear or will not work
It is missing from the Appstore
The app may not be published for Fire TV, may be incompatible with your model, may be unavailable in your marketplace or may be hidden by device filters. Search on the Fire TV itself, check the account marketplace and look for a separate TV edition. Avoid sideloading a touch-first app just to make it appear.
It installs but navigation fails
Test the directional pad and Select button. If the app expects tapping, dragging or a keyboard, use its tablet version and remove it from the child’s TV profile.
The child reaches unsuitable content
Turn off unrestricted search and autoplay where possible, use a child profile, remove general video apps from that profile and choose a constrained catalog such as PBS KIDS for independent viewing.
The experience is too passive
Watch together, ask the child to explain the idea, then follow with a book, physical activity, worksheet or tablet practice. Television viewing should supplement—not replace—active learning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line
Choose PBS KIDS Video for the best free, low-friction educational Fire TV experience. Choose Amazon Kids+ when you want a larger Amazon-controlled catalog and accept that included apps vary by device. Use Prime Video and YouTube as curated sources of educational programs, not as complete curricula. For genuinely interactive reading and math, put Khan Academy Kids, Duolingo ABC or another touch-first app on a tablet unless a current Fire TV listing proves otherwise.
