In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Astrid Deetz’s discovery of the town model reopens the portal to the Afterlife, pulling three generations of the Deetz family into a new round of supernatural trouble. This ranking weighs story impact, screen presence, comic or dramatic distinctiveness, and how clearly each character shapes the film. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official or measured consensus.
Warner Bros.’ synopsis says an unexpected family tragedy brings the Deetzes back to Winter River. Tim Burton directed the 2024 sequel, which opened in US theaters on September 6, 2024. The list below discusses character roles and relationships but avoids major plot resolutions.

10. Richard
Richard, played by Santiago Cabrera, is part of the film’s supporting cast, but his role is less central to the Deetz family conflict than the characters ranked above him. He helps broaden the story’s supernatural and personal world without becoming one of its main engines. That smaller footprint places him at the bottom of this list, rather than any lack of distinction in the cast.
9. Bob-Shrinker
Nick Kellington plays Bob-Shrinker, a character whose name signals the film’s taste for grotesque, cartoonish invention. He brings a compact burst of Afterlife weirdness to a story that moves between family drama, horror, and comedy. Bob-Shrinker is memorable as part of the ensemble’s visual eccentricity, though he does not steer the central family decisions.
#1 Best Overall
8. Jeremy
Arthur Conti’s Jeremy matters because Astrid’s story reaches beyond the immediate Deetz household. He gives her a connection outside her tense relationship with Lydia, helping the film establish what Astrid wants and what she is willing to risk. Jeremy’s importance comes more from his place in Astrid’s arc than from the broad comic force of the film’s supernatural characters.
7. Delores
Monica Bellucci’s Delores adds a sharply defined presence to the Afterlife side of the story. Her character expands the film’s macabre register and gives the supernatural plot a different energy from Beetlejuice’s chaotic mischief. Delores ranks above the smaller supporting roles because she is distinctive on sight and contributes to the sense that the Afterlife has its own dangers and personalities.
6. Wolf Jackson
Willem Dafoe plays Wolf Jackson, an Afterlife figure whose unusual position lets the film parody show-business authority while keeping its supernatural bureaucracy in view. The role stands apart from the Deetz family’s domestic tensions and from Beetlejuice’s gleeful disruption. Wolf earns a place in the top half for that clear comic identity and for helping make the Afterlife feel like a functioning, if deeply strange, world.

5. Rory
Justin Theroux’s Rory is Lydia’s boyfriend and manager, a combination that makes his relationship with her feel entangled with both her public identity and private life. Rory’s self-interest and apparent dimness give Theroux room for broad comedy, while his place beside Lydia puts him in the way of a family already struggling to reconnect.
Theroux told TIME that playing Rory as “shallow and dim and not very bright” was fun, and described the couple’s dynamic as “this incredibly ingrown toenail of a codependent relationship.” That is the actor’s account of his performance and the relationship, not an objective verdict on Lydia or a claim about audience consensus.
4. Delia Deetz
Catherine O’Hara’s Delia remains one of the sequel’s most instantly recognizable presences. As Lydia’s stepmother, she brings an artistic sensibility and comic self-absorption that contrast with Lydia’s guardedness and Astrid’s rebellion. Delia’s value is not only that she supplies laughs: she is part of the family structure the story asks to reckon with after loss brings the Deetzes together again.

3. Astrid Deetz
Jenna Ortega’s Astrid is the catalyst for the sequel’s new supernatural crisis. The official synopsis describes her as Lydia’s rebellious teenage daughter, and it is Astrid’s discovery of the town model in the attic that accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. Her curiosity and choices move the plot, while her strained connection with Lydia gives the spectacle a personal stake.
Astrid ranks just below the two central returning figures because the film’s conflict ultimately depends on the history and leverage Beetlejuice and Lydia bring to it. But she is not simply a passenger in their story: without Astrid’s discovery, the sequel’s chain of events does not begin in the same way.
2. Lydia Deetz
Winona Ryder’s Lydia is the emotional hinge between the original film’s legacy and the sequel’s new family story. She is still haunted by Beetlejuice, now a paranormal talk-show host, and must navigate her relationship with Astrid as the family returns to Winter River. Her familiar history with the demon gives the plot its central tension, while her role as a mother makes the threat more intimate than a simple return to supernatural chaos.
Rank #4
Lydia’s second-place ranking reflects how much of the film’s emotional and narrative weight rests on her; she is the character through whom the old danger and the new family conflict meet. She comes in just behind Beetlejuice because his disruptive presence gives the title and the sequel its unmistakable comic engine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.1. Beetlejuice
Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice remains the film’s most distinctive character: a mischievous demon whose return turns the Deetzes’ problems into a collision of horror, slapstick, and outrageous performance. He is central to the sequel’s premise and to Lydia’s past, and he still hopes to marry her, according to Netflix Tudum’s cast and story guide. That combination of menace, comic timing, and shameless self-interest makes him the strongest presence in the ensemble.
The ranking is not a claim that the supporting characters are unimportant. Astrid starts the new crisis, Lydia anchors its family drama, and Delia gives the Deetz household much of its comic texture. Beetlejuice takes the top spot because he most fully embodies the sequel’s particular blend of mayhem and macabre comedy.

Why the Deetz family matters more than a simple hero ranking
The film works through a family axis rather than a conventional single-protagonist contest. The Warner Bros. synopsis centers the return of three generations after a tragedy; Netflix’s guide identifies Lydia, Delia, and Astrid as returning to Winter River, while Astrid’s discovery opens the portal. Beetlejuice then exploits the history he shares with Lydia. The four characters at the top of this list therefore represent different kinds of impact: catalyst, emotional center, family comic relief, and supernatural disruption.
For cast details and the story setup, see Apple TV’s US listing and the official Warner Bros. synopsis. Netflix Tudum’s page reported US Netflix availability as of May 6, 2025; that dated, regional listing should not be read as a guarantee of current availability everywhere.
