Who are the best anime kitsune? This is a character ranking, not a list of anime series. It weighs how clearly a character is a fox or fox spirit, how central and memorable they are in their story, how much they develop, and how distinctively their series adapts fox-spirit traditions. The ranking is editorial, not a poll or critical consensus.
The available official character pages firmly establish only five candidates: Tama, Senko, Shiro, the fox child from Natsume’s Book of Friends, and Gintaro. A ten-place list would require adding characters whose identity and role are not verified by the sources available for this article. Rather than pad the ranking with guesses, the entries below cover the five substantiated characters.
What makes an anime character a kitsune?
“Kitsune” can refer to a fox or fox spirit, but anime does not draw from one fixed folklore canon. Fox characters may be traveling yōkai, household helpers, shrine messengers, or uncanny beings living apart from humans. Their roles differ from series to series.
Japanese fox traditions are similarly varied. The white fox associated with Inari is commonly described as a messenger or servant, not the deity itself. Other traditions include wild or possessing foxes, and foxes may be portrayed as auspicious, threatening, or both. The nine-tailed fox and Tamamo-no-Mae are closely linked in later retellings, but the names are not interchangeable in every historical account; the Sesshoseki is a later part of the Tamamo-no-Mae legend, not another name for her. These distinctions are summarized in YOKAI.JP’s overview of kitsune.

The best anime kitsune, ranked
1. Tama — Sengoku Youko
Tama is a fox yōkai who has lived for more than 200 years and travels with Jinka, according to the official Sengoku Youko character page. That combination of an explicit fox-spirit identity, long life, and an active place in the story makes her the strongest fit here for readers looking for a kitsune who is more than a decorative supernatural presence.
Her journeying role also gives the series room to place a fox yōkai in motion through its world rather than keeping her confined to a shrine or a single domestic setting.

2. Senko — The Helpful Fox Senko-san
Senko is the title character of The Helpful Fox Senko-san, as identified on the official character page. The series centers its fox character in a helper role, giving the kitsune premise an intimate, everyday scale rather than treating it chiefly as a source of danger or mystery.

Her appeal comes from the distinctive premise of a fox spirit entering ordinary life, not from a claim that she represents every traditional fox figure.
3. Gintaro — Gingitsune
Gintaro is a large fox-form Inari shrine messenger who can be seen by Makoto, the shrine’s legitimate heir, according to TV Tokyo’s Gingitsune character page. That makes him the clearest shrine-messenger character in this group and connects his role directly to the Inari tradition.

Gintaro ranks highly for how specifically the series defines his place: he is not simply a fox-shaped magical companion, but a messenger associated with a shrine and its heir.
4. Shiro — The Helpful Fox Senko-san
The same official The Helpful Fox Senko-san character page identifies Shiro as a fox familiar who comes to Nakano. It also notes her pure-white tail and supernatural powers. That gives her a distinct profile within a series already built around fox characters.

Shiro’s lower position reflects the editorial emphasis on story centrality: the available character description establishes a memorable fox identity and role, while Senko is the title character.

5. The fox child — Natsume’s Book of Friends
The official character page for Natsume’s Book of Friends describes the fox child as a fox yōkai living in a forest who admires Natsume. This is a smaller-scale, more solitary portrayal than the traveling, domestic, or shrine-associated roles above.
The character earns a place for the contrast: a childlike yōkai living in the forest offers a different emotional register from a household helper or shrine messenger. The series’ official portal also provides information about its comics, anime, and goods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this ranking has five entries, not ten
The title asks for ten, but the official descriptions available here directly verify only these five candidates. Adding characters from memory or selecting fox-like figures without confirming that they are actually foxes or fox spirits in their particular stories would make the list less reliable. The placements are therefore a supported editorial shortlist, not a claim to have established a definitive top ten.

That qualification matters especially for famous folklore figures. Tamamo-no-Mae and the nine-tailed fox provide useful context for understanding fox-spirit traditions, but a folklore connection alone does not confirm a particular anime portrayal. A character should be ranked only after the relevant series’ version is checked.
