The best British mystery shows reward viewers with more than a reveal: they pair a satisfying investigation with distinctive characters, atmosphere and a setting that matters. This ranking weighs those qualities alongside influence, longevity and consistency, while recognizing that a village whodunit and a dark, season-long crime story are different kinds of mystery. “British” here means a scripted series produced in the UK. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive consensus; use the format notes to find the right show for your mood.

10. Miss Marple

Best for: a traditional country-house or village puzzle led by an observant amateur detective.

For the classic Christie experience, Joan Hickson’s Miss Marple is a natural starting point. The ITVX catalogue identifies Hickson as Marple and lists episodes, while Netflix UK’s mystery catalogue also includes an Agatha Christie’s Marple title. Those catalogue references establish that more than one adaptation exists; they do not mean every listing refers to the same series. This entry means the Joan Hickson version, not the later ITV adaptation.

Marple’s appeal is the contrast between her quiet manner and her sharp reading of people. The mysteries favor clues, motives and village relationships over action, making this a good choice when you want a self-contained puzzle rather than a continuing police investigation. ITVX lists episodes of Miss Marple; Netflix UK’s TV Mysteries catalogue includes a Marple entry.

9. Foyle’s War

Best for: period detective stories shaped by wartime life and its moral compromises.

Foyle’s War combines a case-of-the-week framework with the pressures of its historical setting. The appeal is not simply the period detail: investigations unfold in a society under strain, where personal loyalties and public duties can collide. That gives the mysteries a broader human context than a puzzle built only around a closed circle of suspects.

Netflix UK’s official TV Mysteries catalogue has listed Foyle’s War, but a catalogue entry is not proof of current availability in every country. Check the services available in your region before planning a watch.

8. Inspector Morse

Best for: thoughtful, character-led cases in an Oxford setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

John Thaw’s Inspector Morse anchors the series with an intelligent but difficult detective whose private tastes and temperament shape the investigations. Oxford is more than scenery: its institutions and social layers give the cases a distinctive texture. The show generally offers individual investigations, so viewers can settle into an episode without needing a season-long crime arc.

Rank #2
E1 ENTERTAINMENT MAIGRET Collection, The
  • Michael Gambon brings Georges Simenon's astute student of human behavior and world detective Inspector Maigret to life in this collection of two MAIGRET miniseries. Using his powers of deduction to sort out a string of sordid crimes taken straight from the pages of Mr. Simenon's popular novels. Contains MAIGRET and MAIGRET II. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: MYSTERY/SUSPENSE Rating:&n

ITVX describes Morse as Oxford’s best-known crime drama; that is the platform’s description, not an independently established ranking. Its catalogue is a useful place to identify the series and browse episodes. View Inspector Morse on ITVX.

7. Vera

Best for: a weathered, place-centred police procedural with a formidable lead.

Vera earns its place through its combination of investigative patience and strong regional atmosphere. The cases are designed to be followed one at a time, while the central detective’s bluntness, instincts and vulnerability give the procedural format a human anchor. It is a solid pick if you want a continuing lead character but do not want every episode to depend on the previous one.

6. Shetland

Best for: mysteries where landscape and community are inseparable from the crime.

Shetland makes isolation part of the storytelling: the close-knit community and exposed island setting can make a case feel both intimate and difficult to escape. Its investigations often develop across multiple episodes, making it a better fit for viewers who enjoy following a central case rather than dipping into a wholly separate mystery each week. The quieter pace and bleak atmosphere are central to its appeal, but may not suit anyone seeking a light, cosy puzzle.

Rank #3
Strictly Confidential - The Complete Series
  • Linda (Suranne Jones), an ex-cop turned sex therapist, is pulled into a world of fetish and S&M when her ex-lover, Angie (Eva Pope), seeks her advice on a sordid murder case. When another body is discovered - and this time Linda knows the victim - her professional and personal life are thrown into shambles. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION Rating: NR Age: 741952649298

5. Agatha Christie’s Poirot

Best for: carefully constructed classic whodunits and a long-running character portrait.

David Suchet’s Poirot is one of British television’s defining screen detectives: precise, vain, perceptive and unmistakably particular about his methods. The series balances standalone mysteries with the pleasure of watching a consistent lead performance deepen over time. Its polished period world and emphasis on clues make it a strong choice for viewers who want the pleasure of working through a puzzle, not just the suspense of a chase.

Agatha Christie Limited says the ITV adaptation debuted in 1989 and ran for almost 25 years, comprising 13 series and 70 episodes (Agatha Christie Limited, undated page accessed 2026). That breadth makes it easy to sample the format and spend longer with the character. Agatha Christie Limited’s Poirot page provides the series details.

4. Endeavour

Best for: a period mystery with an evolving partnership and a connection to a larger detective legacy.

Endeavour is a prequel to Inspector Morse, following the younger Endeavour Morse and his relationship with Fred Thursday. Its early-1970s setting gives the cases a distinct period character, while the long-form development rewards viewers who want to see the detective’s world and relationships change. It works both as a route into the Morse stories and as a series in its own right.

ITV identifies series 9 as the final series and says Russell Lewis wrote all 36 screenplays across the show’s decade-long run (ITV Press Centre, 2023). That continuity helps the series feel shaped as a whole rather than simply extended from case to case. ITV’s Endeavour series 9 page confirms its status as the prequel and the final series.

3. Broadchurch

Best for: a contemporary community mystery with emotional stakes beyond identifying a culprit.

Broadchurch turns a crime investigation into a portrait of a community under pressure. Its focus on grief, suspicion and the consequences of a case gives it a different rhythm from the classic episodic detective show: the central story is meant to be followed in sequence. The ensemble and coastal setting make the town feel like part of the mystery, not a backdrop that could be swapped out.

Netflix UK’s mystery catalogue has included Broadchurch. That is evidence of its genre classification in that catalogue, not a guarantee that it is currently streamable in any particular territory.

2. Life on Mars

Best for: a crime story that folds a detective mystery into an unsettling question about reality and identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Life on Mars starts from a police investigator displaced into a very different time and working culture, then uses the premise to unsettle the usual procedural rules. Individual cases provide momentum, but the larger question hanging over the series gives the story a strong serialised thread. That blend makes it a particularly distinctive choice for viewers who like their mysteries to ask what is happening to the protagonist as well as who committed the crime.

1. Agatha Christie’s Poirot

Best for: the fullest all-round combination of puzzle construction, memorable lead performance and classic British mystery atmosphere.

Poirot takes the top position because the format’s pleasures reinforce one another: a detective with a vivid personality, a steady supply of solvable mysteries and a carefully realized period world. It is not the only entry here with an outstanding lead or a strong sense of place, but it offers one of the most complete versions of the classic British whodunit. Its collection of self-contained cases also makes it easier to sample than a single, tightly serialized crime story.

For the verified scale and history of the series, see Agatha Christie Limited’s series page.

How to choose your next British mystery

Choose this kind of show Good starting point What to expect
Classic, largely self-contained whodunits Agatha Christie’s Poirot or Joan Hickson’s Miss Marple Clues, suspects and satisfying individual cases, with a recurring detective.
Thoughtful police investigations and a strong lead Inspector Morse or Vera Procedural cases shaped by the detective’s personality and setting.
Period atmosphere and an evolving story Endeavour or Foyle’s War Historical context and character development alongside investigations.
A community under the pressure of a central crime Broadchurch or Shetland More serialized storytelling, with relationships and place closely tied to the case.
A mystery with a high-concept question Life on Mars Police cases joined to a continuing question about the protagonist’s experience.

If you are asking, “What other whodunit TV shows are there?”, start with Poirot or Marple for classic puzzles, then try Morse or Vera for detective-led procedurals. For a season-long story, choose Broadchurch or Shetland. These distinctions matter more than treating one ranking as a universal answer to what makes a mystery best.

Where to check episode catalogues

Official catalogue pages can help identify a series and browse listed episodes, but they do not establish availability worldwide or guarantee that a listing is current. Check the service in your own country before deciding what to watch. Relevant catalogues include ITVX’s Watching the Detectives collection, Netflix UK’s TV Mysteries catalogue, and the individual ITVX listings for Inspector Morse and Miss Marple.
