There is no responsibly verifiable top ten in the available evidence. Hayao Miyazaki is the one director here whose television-series directing is firmly documented: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences identifies Future Boy Conan (1978) as his first TV series. The other names sometimes grouped with him are candidates, not a substantiated ranking of television directors.
To rank anime TV directors fairly, the comparison should weigh series-level direction and consistency first, then influence on anime’s visual and narrative language, range, and usefulness as a starting point for viewers. Film acclaim alone cannot establish a director’s standing in television. Applying that standard means resisting the temptation to fill ten slots with famous names whose TV credits and comparable records have not been verified here.
Why a definitive top ten would be misleading
“Best” is an editorial judgment, not a measurable fact. A credible all-time list needs comparable evidence for each person: what television series they directed, how consistently their direction holds across those series, what distinctive choices they brought to the form, and how their work influenced later anime. A celebrated feature filmography may inform that assessment, but it cannot stand in for television work.
The candidate pool often proposed for this topic includes Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Oshii, Katsuhiro Otomo, Hideaki Anno, Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda, Masaaki Yuasa, Shinichiro Watanabe, and Kunihiko Ikuhara. That collection is useful as a set of names to investigate; it does not verify that each is principally a TV director, establish comparable television credits, or justify any ordering. Presenting it as a ranked top ten would turn an unverified shortlist into a claim of fact.

The verified television-directing anchor: Hayao Miyazaki
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences identifies Future Boy Conan (1978) as the first television series Miyazaki directed, while recording his feature-film career separately. That distinction matters: his substantial reputation in theatrical animation should not be mistaken for evidence that his television output is equally extensive.
Studio Ghibli describes Future Boy Conan as Miyazaki’s first opportunity to direct an entire narrative. The studio’s profile also characterizes his approach as centered on hand-drawn animation and storyboard-led development, and notes recurring interest in nature and morally complex female protagonists. Those are the studio’s descriptions of his work, rather than a neutral measure of his rank among TV directors.

Miyazaki’s broader career includes co-founding Studio Ghibli in 1985 and directing Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), as recorded by the Japan Media Arts Festival. His feature achievements are important context, but the television case rests on the documented direction of Future Boy Conan.
What the industry figures do—and do not—show
The Hiroshima Animation Season Golden Carpstar report, published in 2022, reviews Japanese animation in 2020–2021. It notes that selected films discussed in the report each grossed more than 10 billion yen and that animation accounted for 10 of the top 20 works in the 2021 overall box-office ranking it cites. These figures describe a particular period and theatrical market; they do not measure the quality or influence of television direction, and they cannot determine an individual director’s place in a TV ranking.

The report discusses Miyazaki, Mamoru Hosoda, and Makoto Shinkai in the context of original auteur-driven features from the preceding decade, and Hideaki Anno in connection with a 2021 feature. That establishes industry context for those filmmakers, not a comparable record of their television directing.

- Verify series-level credits. Establish which television series each director actually directed, distinguishing full-series direction from episode direction, anthology segments, OVAs, and film work.
- Compare television work on its own terms. Assess visual storytelling, pacing across episodes, tonal control, and consistency over a series rather than transferring acclaim from films.
- Make the weighting explicit. Give greatest weight to distinctive and accomplished TV direction, then consider consistency, influence, breadth, and how accessible the work is to a viewer choosing a starting point.
- Separate context from evidence of rank. Awards, box-office results, and general fame may explain a filmmaker’s prominence, but they are not substitutes for comparable television credits and series-level analysis.
With those checks completed for all ten choices, a ranked list could be an informed editorial judgment. Without them, the honest conclusion is narrower: Miyazaki is a documented candidate, while the proposed ten-name pool remains unverified as a list of the best anime TV show directors.
