This casino documentary Netflix series focuses on the history of classic video games. The history of video games can be traced as far back as the 1950s. During this timeline, computer scientists started developing simple simulations and games. In 1962 a group of MIT students led by Steve Russell developed the first game on a video display Spacewar.  It wasn’t until the 1970s that true commercial development of games began.

The mid-1970s were the best for the video game industry. The first ROM cartridge-based home consoles including the Atari video computer systems arrived. The home console market flourished and arcade video games Space Invaders and Pac-Man were released.  This era was covered in the first episode of High Score.

Each episode of high score tells a tale of various aspects of gaming history. High Score episodes touched on the early 90s console wars, the general cultural intensity of Nintendo, and the rise of digital RPGs. With major gaming luminaries from that evolution acting as the viewers’ guide and sharing design and manufacturing history. High Scores interview subjects are

  • Gail Tilden (Nintendo)
  • Roberta Williams (King’s Quest)
  • Richard Garriot (Ultima)
  • Akira Yasuda (Street Fighter)
  • John Tobias (Mortal Kombat)

High score tries to blend the interviews and a visual atmosphere to create an interactive story. The series also featured the iconic voice artist Charles Martinet who portrayed Mario to narrate the gaming history series. The amount of material in High Score is outstanding but combined into a 6 episode series seems chaotic.

The first episode started with Tomohiro Nishikado narrating in detail the creation of the space invaders. We see him imagine Tokyo being invaded by large robotic spider-like creatures. We can see him pull out pages of the original drawings of the monsters in Space Invaders.

Then Tomohiro follows up by explaining the decisions that drove what the final game’s character looks like. In the first episode, there’s a sense of inspiration that sets a tone. High Score also includes a famous story of failure, the ET for the Atari 2600. High scores video games story celebrates games. It presents it as a medium where the limits are only a single person’s imagination.

Ackman was able to find an ally in Chicago activist Julie Contreras. It was Julie who rallied the Latino community to get the federal government to intervene on their behalf. Ackman was able to achieve partial vindication in a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.

Data can be used to weaponize social, cultural, and political warfare. The Great Hack is a documentary film directed and produced by Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim that analyzes the Cambridge Analytica Scandal.

In 2013, the SCL group formed the subsidiary group Cambridge Analytica so it could be involved in the US elections. Cambridge Analytica was responsible for collecting massive data. The data the firm collects was meant to be used in a sales strategy for creating massive campaigns that personally address users.

The result of the campaign ended up affecting the UK and US politics. This casino documentary Netflix follows professor David Carrol who found out Cambridge Analytical claimed to have 5000 data points on every American voter. David went on a legal journey with Lawyer Ravu Naik of ITN solicitors to reclaim his data.

As Cambridge Analytica processes user data through the SCL in Britain, David’s complaints fell under British jurisdiction. In early July 2017, David successfully filed his complaint with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office. Due to David’s complaint, SCL was fined £15,000 for lack of compliance with the UK ICO. This led to the social media company Facebook paying £500,000 for lack of transparency and security issues related to the harvesting of data.

As David Carrol’s legal journey unfolded, investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr kept on researching Cambridge Analytica’s influence. This led Carole to Christopher Wylie the whistleblower. Wylie explains how mass harvesting of data and microtargeting were used to influence countries’ elections.

In an exclusive interview with Carole for the observer, Wylie describes how psychographic profile techniques were employed in scraping Facebook user data. He mentioned that all that was done with the help of Cambridge University professor Aleksandr Kogan. These claims were what made the Cambridge Analytica scandal public. It led to Christopher Wylie testifying in the UK parliament and naming Brittany Kaiser the former director at Cambridge Analytica.
