IMDb does not publish an official all-time ranking of individual TV seasons. Its Top 250 TV chart ranks series and miniseries, while ratings for a series and its individual episodes are separate. So a list of the “45 best seasons according to IMDb” needs a clearly identified source and method; without them, its order cannot be verified.
What IMDb’s Top 250 TV chart ranks
IMDb’s Top 250 TV chart covers TV series and miniseries, not individual seasons. Its placement should not be read as a season-by-season ranking: a series can contain seasons with markedly different reception, and the chart does not separate them into ranked entries.
How IMDb ratings differ for series and episodes
IMDb maintains a rating for a TV series separately from ratings users give to individual episodes. As IMDb’s Ratings FAQ puts it, “A TV series rating is not the weighted average of the ratings of individual episodes.” The displayed title rating is a weighted average, not a simple arithmetic mean, and IMDb does not disclose the full weighting method.
That distinction matters if someone builds a season ranking from episode scores. Such a calculation would be a separate analysis, not IMDb’s official series rating. To make it reproducible, its author would need to disclose whether the season score is a mean or median, whether episodes are weighted, any minimum vote threshold and eligibility rules, and the date the scores were captured.

What the Top 250 eligibility threshold means
IMDb’s FAQ says the Top 250 chart currently requires at least 25,000 ratings and counts ratings from regular IMDb voters. That threshold applies to eligibility for the series-and-miniseries chart; it is not a minimum vote count for seasons or episodes.
IMDb-hosted season lists are not necessarily official charts
IMDb also hosts user-created lists. Its “Top 100 Seasons of TV” is identified as a member-created list that IMDb does not review or verify. Hosting a list on IMDb does not make its selection or order an official IMDb ranking, and this list alone does not establish which 45 seasons belong in a separate article or how they should be ranked.

How to judge a claimed ranking of 45 seasons
A trustworthy ranking should identify its source and explain what “according to IMDb” means. If it uses episode ratings to calculate season scores, it should provide the calculation rules and a dated snapshot of the underlying scores. A useful comparison would also consider the number of episode ratings and how consistent scores are across a season, rather than treating one average as a complete measure.
IMDb cautions that its ratings reflect user opinion: “Think of ratings more as a guide than as an incontrovertible qualitative verdict.” Vote totals and the timing and context of ratings can help readers interpret a score, but they do not turn it into an objective measure of quality. Without a confirmed list, ranking method and observation date, assigning 45 titles and positions would imply evidence that is not established.
