A March 2025 report said Max removed the remaining 255 classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts, completing the removal of the original theatrical shorts from the service in the U.S. context the reporting described. The word “all” refers to those classic shorts. It does not mean every Looney Tunes series, special, or film was taken down. The reporting does not establish why Warner Bros. Discovery made the change, and the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
What was removed
According to Vulture’s reporting from March 2025, the service had already removed a first group of classic shorts in 2022. The remaining 255 were removed in 2025, which the outlet described as the removal of the original 511-short library. Those counts come from the reporting, not from an official Max inventory, so treat them as the outlet’s figures rather than a verified catalog total.
The shorts in question are the classic theatrical cartoons. The Los Angeles Times describes them as works produced from 1930 to 1969, made to be shown before live-action features in cinemas. That original function matters for scope: these were theatrical shorts, not the television series, specials, or feature films that later carried the Looney Tunes name.
What the “all” in the headline does and does not cover
- Covered by the 2025 reporting: the classic theatrical shorts from the 1930–1969 era, including the remaining 255 titles removed in 2025 after the 2022 removal.
- Not implied by the reporting: newer Looney Tunes productions, television series, specials, or films. The report does not say those disappeared, and readers should not assume they did.
- Not confirmed individually: the reporting does not publish a title-by-title list, so it cannot confirm that any specific short was removed by name.
Why it happened: what is and is not established
No official explanation from Warner Bros. Discovery appears in the reporting. No named executive or spokesperson is quoted on the decision, and the outlet noted the company’s silence at the time of publication. Explanations about licensing, rights, or streaming strategy are therefore speculation, not documented fact. If the company has since explained the decision, that statement is not part of the reporting this article relies on.

The service has since been renamed HBO Max, so look for the current app name when you search. Because the 2025 report is now more than eighteen months old, a title that was removed then may not reflect what is available in your region today. Check it directly:
- Open the streaming app or website on the device you normally use, and sign in.
- Use the search field to look up a specific classic short by its exact title, such as a well-known Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck cartoon from the 1930s to 1950s.
- If the short does not appear, search the Looney Tunes name in general to see which titles are listed. Series, specials, and films will appear separately from the classic shorts.
- If a title appears in the catalog but will not play, check the service’s help pages. Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network titles are only partly included in the catalog, and the help pages direct users to missing-episode guidance when an episode is unavailable.
Catalog listings vary by country and can change without notice, so a result from one region or one day does not describe the whole service.

Physical DVD collections
The Los Angeles Times reported in March 2025 that Looney Tunes DVD collections were still for sale at the time of publication. The reporting does not identify which editions were on sale, what shorts they contained, or whether they remain in stock today.
The same report said that some discs manufactured between 2006 and 2008 were apparently suffering from “DVD rot,” a deterioration of the disc’s reflective layer. This was described as a limited report about some discs, not evidence that every disc or edition is affected. Anyone buying an older set should check its condition on arrival.

Comparing the two ways to access the shorts
| Option | What it tells you | Main limit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streaming catalog (Max, now HBO Max) | Whether a specific title is listed in your region right now | Listings vary by territory and date, and the 2025 report does not cover later changes | Exact title search in your local catalog; whether the title plays |
| DVD collection | Whether a set you can physically own is available to buy | The reporting does not establish current editions or complete contents; some discs from 2006–2008 were reported to have degraded | Edition name, the full list of included shorts, disc condition, and region coding |
Open questions
- Which DVD editions are currently sold in your market, and which shorts each one contains.
- Whether Warner Bros. Discovery has since explained the removal or announced a return or alternate distribution for the classic shorts.
- Whether any of these shorts is listed on the service in a particular country today.
These questions were not answered by the 2025 reporting, so none of them should be treated as settled until checked against current listings and company statements.
