In When the Phone Rings episode 2, Baek Sa-eon moves quickly to find the caller, while Hong Hee-joo stays on high alert and continues playing along with the ruse. Netflix lists the episode runtime as 1 hour 8 minutes. Its official synopsis is brief, so it establishes the episode’s central tension without offering a full scene-by-scene recap.
What happens in episode 2?
Netflix’s synopsis says: “Sa-eon works quickly to track down the caller, forcing Hee-joo to stay hypervigilant. Despite her fears, she continues to play along with the ruse.” The episode therefore keeps the focus on two linked pressures: Sa-eon’s effort to identify the caller and Hee-joo’s need to sustain the deception while remaining alert.
The synopsis does not identify the caller, describe every scene, or explain the episode’s complete ending. Those details should not be treated as confirmed by the official episode listing. Netflix’s episode listing gives the concise description and runtime.
Who are Sa-eon and Hee-joo?
Baek Sa-eon, played by Yoo Yeon-seok, is a spokesperson for the South Korean president. Hong Hee-joo, played by Chae Soo-bin, is a sign-language interpreter. Their marriage is central to the series’ crisis, but the official descriptions frame it differently in useful ways: MBC calls it a marriage of convenience in its third year, marked by difficulty communicating, while Netflix describes a strained marriage drawn into a hostage crisis.

That context helps explain why the caller’s threat creates more than an investigative problem: the characters are already bound by a relationship with little meaningful communication. For the broader premise and cast, see MBC Global Media’s series page and Netflix Tudum’s overview.
Episode length and what the official synopsis confirms
Netflix lists episode 2 at 1 hour 8 minutes. The listing confirms the caller investigation, Hee-joo’s hypervigilance, and her continued participation in the ruse; it does not provide a detailed recap or a complete account of how the episode ends.
