The official descriptions give that interval as a relative distance, not a calendar date, so the accurate answer is a span of time before Paul, not a specific year.
What the official descriptions say
Two official sources place the series in the same deep past, but they measure from different points in Paul’s life. Warner Bros. Discovery’s series announcement uses his ascension as the anchor, while Apple TV’s listing uses his birth.
| Source | Reference point | Wording used | In-universe calendar year given |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom, series announcement and synopsis (2024) | Paul Atreides’s ascension | “10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides” | Not stated |
| Apple TV, official series listing (publication date not stated in the listing reviewed) | Paul Atreides’s birth | “10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides” | Not stated |
Both figures are promotional relative-time descriptions. Neither source converts the interval into a year, and neither explains how the two anchors line up internally. If you quote one, quote its own anchor. A neutral summary that fits both is “roughly 10,000 years before the Paul Atreides-era story.”
What the show covers in that period
The Warner Bros. Discovery synopsis says the series follows two Harkonnen sisters as they confront forces that threaten the future of humankind, and as they establish the sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. That makes Dune: Prophecy an origin story about the order’s founding, set long before the events that Paul’s story depends on. It is not a story about Paul himself.
#1 Best Overall
- Runtime: 390 minutes
The same announcement names Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson as the series’ inspiration. The wording is “inspired by,” not a scene-by-scene adaptation, so the book is useful background rather than a source the show follows page by page.
Where the show sits in the wider timeline
For the overall chronology, the useful placement is the order of events: Dune: Prophecy comes first, and the Paul Atreides story comes roughly ten millennia later. Because the official sources give only that relative gap, any claim about how many years separate the show from specific later events in the novels would go beyond what the announcement and listing establish.

How to describe the timing accurately
- Say “roughly 10,000 years before Paul Atreides,” which matches both official sources.
- If you name the anchor, use the source’s own wording: “before the ascension of Paul Atreides” (Warner Bros. Discovery) or “before the birth of Paul Atreides” (Apple TV).
- Do not state an exact in-universe year. The official descriptions do not give one.
- Describe the series as inspired by Sisterhood of Dune, not as a direct adaptation.
Reader questions this answers
Readers often search for “What year does Dune Prophecy take place?” or “How does Dune: Prophecy fit into the Dune timeline?” The short answer to both is the same: about 10,000 years before Paul Atreides, with no official calendar year attached.
The series has one main official placement. The distinction that matters is birth versus ascension, and the official sources do not resolve that difference into a single date.
